(Dec. 12) - Selena Gomez's vow to remain pure until marriage was a choice she made to avoid the hardships her mother faced as a pregnant teen. "My mother had me at 16," she reveals in a new interview (J-14 via OceanUP.) Gomez says her stance on sex is "a promise to myself, to my family and to God... People say, 'She's trying too hard.' I'm not trying to be anybody but myself," she said.

Selena's 'Tell Me Something ...'

While living as a teen mother, Mandy Teefey lived "paycheck to paycheck" trying to support her daughter. Gomez's biological parents, Teefey and Ricardo Joel Gomez, split when Selena was 5, forcing Teefey to move back home.

Gomez admits her mother's strength has inspired her to go after her dreams and remain on a successful path. "My [role model] is first and foremost my mom," she said.

Gomez was given her first purity ring by her biological father at age 12 and has stayed true to her promise, despite criticism.

"People say, 'Oh, she's got a purity ring, she's got this, she's got that -- she's totally just trying to be a good girl,'" Gomez said. "It's so weird."
