(Feb. 23) - Although 'Ugly Betty' actress America Ferrera has nabbed a Golden Globe and an Emmy, she's the first to admit she isn't a fan of the spotlight and that even simple photo shoots make her "a nervous wreck." Ferrera opened up to Niche Media's Gotham Magazine to dish about working with Lindsay Lohan, her love for New York and why she hates jokes about America.
The 24-year-old TV star has made a name for herself, starring in the films 'Real Women Have Curves' and 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.' But she is probably most known as braces-wearing, fashion misfit Betty Suarez on ABC's 'Ugly Betty.'

Even though she loves acting, Ferrera hates the paparazzi. She recalls the worst encounter with photographers occurred when Lohan guest starred on the show last fall.
"We deal with paparazzi in big numbers every time we're out shooting. They get so close. They're basically in the scene with you and you have to pretend you don't hear the clicking of cameras. It's a whole other element to deal with when we're on locations."
Although the paparazzi sometimes try to swarm the set, Ferrera says it is a small price to pay in order to film in New York. After filming two seasons in LA, 'Ugly Betty' moved production toNew York, where the show is actually supposed to take place.
Ferrera says filming in New York has sparked creativity and new emerging story lines. "This season we've really found a balance with great stories," she said. "Lots of romance... For the name 'Ugly Betty,' she sure gets a lot of love. There's always somebody. A really fun romance is coming up for Betty that spans the whole second half of the season," she revealed.

Gotham Magazine Excerpts
On her character's fashion: "This is kind of a secret, but there are times when Betty has some crazy print on and it turns out to be vintage YSL or Versace. They look hideous on Betty, but they're actually these wonderful pieces."
On her personal fashion sense: "I'm not a huge fashion person. I've grown to respect the art of fashion... I love Oscar de la Renta. I always feel beautiful and womanly and girly in Oscar de la Renta."
On hating her name: "In terms of the jokes and the songs, kids just think they're hilarious. There isn't a joke you can tell about America that I haven't heard. It's such a weird name. I hated it. It made me way too different. I hated when they'd call out 'America' and everyone in the classroom would turn around to see whose name it was. I dreaded it. SoI used my middle name, Georgina."
On why she loves New York City: "?What's exciting is all the different ways to see New York... I don't know how long you have to live in the city before you get to call yourself a New Yorker. I feel like I was born a New Yorker."
