Her spokesman says the singer voluntarily went to a police station on Thursday, where she was charged with assault.

"She was questioned by appointment in relation to an accusation made after the Berkeley Ball last year, Chris Goodman said. "She was charged with common assault and will attend a court hearing in the coming weeks."

Dancer Sheren Flash had been quoted by tabloid newspapers as saying she was hit in the eye by the 25-year-old 'Back to Black' singer after asking to take her picture at a ball on Sept. 26.

A court date has been set for March 17.

The retro-soul singer's career has been marred by drug problems and a series of run-ins with the police. This past week, she returned to London from a months-long holiday in St. Lucia.
