'Night at the Museum' star made the trek to Africa in partnership with Bulgari's Save the Children campaign.
"I visited Uganda this year and saw firsthand how Save the Children is making a difference in the lives of children in need," says the actor. "Save the Children's education programs -- many of them in areas of war and conflict -- are bringing hope to children who clearly love the opportunity to go to school and try to rewrite the future for themselves and their communities. "
More on the Campaign:
Mr. Stiller?s 4-day visit, planned and organized by Bulgari, featured a number of different Save the Children initiatives, including child protection and peace building programs. Mr. Stiller visited formal and non-formal education programs, where he participated in school classes and interacted with the children, their communities and Save the Children staff.
Predominantly nomadic and characterized by inter ethnic armed conflicts over water, livestock theft and rustling, Karamoja has had decades of instability and violence, which have undermined the general development of Karamojong people and has particularly affected women and children. Uganda is a country emerging from the devastation of years of civil war and family displacement, where children still struggle to access basic services, healthcare and education.
Uganda has the highest proportion of children orphaned with HIV/AIDS and records the abduction of over 60,000 children. Save the Children?s Rewrite the Future program aims to bring education to children affected by conflict in fragile countries and war-torn communities in order to protect them from violence in the short-term and help them to break the cycle of poverty and conflict in the long-term.
As part of its 125th anniversary celebration this year, Bulgari has chosen to support the Rewrite the Future campaign of Save the Children, the largest independent international organization serving children in need in more than 100 countries around the world.
Bulgari will make its own contribution to Save the Children with the objective of raising ? 10 million (approximately $12.8 million) by the end of 2009. Bulgari has already donated ? 1 million ($1.2 million) to the organization at the official announcement on October 30th 2008, while the remaining figure will be raised during 2009.
As part of the campaign, Bulgari created a special silver ring - a tribute to the silversmith origins of Sotirio Bulgari, the company?s founder ? which features the Save the Children logo engraved inside.
The ring is on sale through December 31, 2009 in all Bulgari stores worldwide, selected department stores, and online at Shop.Bulgari.com for $290 (including tax) of which $60 will be donated to the campaign.
Other supporters of the initiative are Julianne Moore, Benicio Del Toro, Sting, Willem Dafoe, Rosario Fiorello, Gabriele Muccino, Jason Lewis, Andy Garcia, Valeria Golino, Isabella Rossellini, Sally Field, Hugh Jackman and Terence Howard.
