Yet another musician has
laid claim on Coldplay's hit tune 'Vida La Vida' - after the band told a federal court that it did not copy parts of Joe Satriani's music, Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam) has accused Coldplay of basing the song on his 1970s track 'Foreigner Suite.'
It's not that we don't believe in intellectual property or the existence of plagiarism, but we're going to go out on a limb here: we think with a finite number of chord progressions available in Western music, a little retreaded ground is inevitable. It's all in what you do with it, right? Here are our top ten sound-alike songs - they may be uncannily similar, but we have room in our hearts for all.
10. We don't want to break any hearts, but Paris Hilton's breakout single isn't the most original tune ever written. 9. Huey Lewis wants a new drug, but Ray Parker wants a new bass line. 8. We could swear we'd heard the intro to The Strokes' hit single 'Last Night' before. 7. "Take my photo off the wall if it just won't sing for you / speaking words of wisdom, let it be." 6. Madonna got Rick-rolled when Astley came out with this ditty that sounds remarkable similar in places to her hit 'Holiday.' 5. We've been told these are two different songs, and we have no reason to believe that's a lie... but... 4. Yup, Jet again, those scamps. These are so similar we're gonna go ahead and call this "homage." 3. Two amazing songs, one interesting similarity. 2. This is a lesson in how the exact same chord progression can result in two awesome tunes. 1. We always knew the chord progression in Pachelbel's Canon in D showed up all over pop music, but no one has ever illustrated it as well as comedian Rob Paravonian. 2009 AOL LLC. All Rights Reserved.
