Sulu Keeps Marriage, Slams Court Decision

George Takei is up in arms over Tuesday's California Supreme Court ruling upholding the state's voter-decided gay marriage ban, saying the body "decided to be indecisive" by allowing some marriages -- including his -- to stand and predicted the ruling will "ultimately be condemned by history."

The actor known to 'Star Trek' fans as the original Sulu married his longtime partner Brad Altman last year before Proposition 8 put the kibosh on same-sex unions. The court decided to allow the other 18,000-or-so marriages to also remain on the books.

"It was a ruling that doesn't resolve anything because there is still inequality," he told TV Guide on Tuesday. "It's like [George Orwell's 'Animal Farm'] -- some pigs are more equal than other pigs. We're more equal than some of the other gays and lesbians."

Takei said the court, which ruled last May that it was unconstitutional to deny gay couples the right to wed, had done a "flip-flop" on the issue. "This so-called ruling by the California Supreme Court will ultimately be condemned by history."

'Harold and Kumar' star Kal Penn, who left Hollywood this year to work at the White House, posed a question for gay marriage opponents: "So if the CA Supreme Court & voters are so concerned with the "sanctity of marriage", how about we make divorce illegal too? Any takers?"

Penn's costar in 'Harold' was John Cho, who plays Sulu in the new 'Star Trek' movies.
