Rihanna's attorney Donald Etra told PEOPLE, "Rihanna was served at my office by L.A. DA investigators. If the preliminary hearing indeed goes forward, she is now legally required to be there, she will be there, and will answer all questions truthfully."
The 21-year-old songstress was allegedly beaten by Brown in February during Grammy weekend. Photos of the battered pop star later appeared on TMZ.
Brown, 20, has been charged with two felony assault in relation to the incident. He pleaded not guilty to those charges.
L.A. criminal defense attorney Jeffery Rubenstein, who is not involved with the trial, explained how the trial might proceed. "Rihanna's testimony can make or break the case," he said. "Her willingness to testify and be truthful about what happened is a step closer to convicting Brown. On the other hand, if prosecutors fail to present a case, Geragos can seek to dismiss or reduce the charges on the spot."
Brown recently emerged on YouTube after a long period of silence, telling his fans he "ain't a monster" and taking shots at the media coverage surrounding him.
