In the wake of the break-up between Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo, various reports now cite people both famous and not who may be linked to the couple's demise ... though one country star is denying playing a part in the split.

One tabloid linked superstar Kenny Chesney to Simpson, saying that he and Simpson were flirting in front of Romo days before their split at a July 4 party. Chesney is firing back against those claims, telling PEOPLE that "Tony's a friend, and I wouldn't flirt with a buddy's girlfriend."

Chesney goes on to further bolster his feelings toward the situation, saying: "More importantly, Jessica was just being sweet and there was nothing else to it. It's not funny. There were no problems. Everybody got along great. After the party, everybody went their own way and nobody thought anything more about it. Period. End of story."

"If a girl and her boyfriend can't go to someone's house for a Fourth of July party and talk to the other guests without it turning into a big nightmare ... , then I feel really sorry for Jessica and Tony, who're both really nice people," Chesney said to PEOPLE.

In Romo-related reports, Us Magazine claims that it was a 22-year-old Simpson lookalike that may have been responsible for the split.

According to the Us report, Romo had been exchanging "flirty texts" which then led to a relationship with Natalie Smith, who they describe as "a younger, skinnier" Simpson. They say the relationship between Romo and Smith -- who is the daughter of the associate athletic director at Eastern Illinois University, Romo's alma mater -- was going on for months, and that he even introduced her to Simpson backstage at one of her concerts.

"We hung out for, like 10 to 15 minutes, backstage. She was cool and nice," Smith tells Us about her time with Simpson.

An Us source says that Romo and Smith "are are not officially dating, but they are having an intimate relationship."

Smith's father and Romo's former coach, however, disagrees. "His breakup brought all these rumors and stories and it is not true," John Smith tells PEOPLE.
