'SATC' Star Garson Adopting Boy, 8
'Sex and the City' fan fave Willie Garson is deep in the process of adopting the boy, whom he met at an adoption fair in Los Angeles, the actor told TV Guide.
Garson has been working on adopting for years, and like most others in his shoes, he was trying for a baby or toddler. But then he met "cute and sweet" Nathan. Cute being important, because Garson says that's a big part of the cutthroat world of adoption.
He described the bizarre scene of older orphans at the fair:
"It's like a pet fair -- as horrifying as you can imagine ... It was really hard. The 16-year-old fat, ugly kid, who has probably been to 30 of these, knows he's not going to get adopted. Like everything, cute wins."
Nathan moved in with Garson in February, where he is adjusting nicely to his new life with more opportunities. "He's going into third grade, plays baseball, goes to karate, and has a posse of pals."
Garson also plans on bringing Nathan to New York City when he starts filming the next 'SATC' movie, in which he'll reprise his role of Sarah Jessica Parker's friend Stanford Blatch. "I think he's going to be freaked out when we go to New York, where [the cast] are like the Yankees," jokes Garson. "We can't walk 20 feet without being mobbed."

I am happy for Willie but absolutely stunned by his statement:
"It's like a pet fair -- as horrifying as you can imagine ... It was really hard. The 16-year-old fat, ugly kid, who has probably been to 30 of these, knows he's not going to get adopted. Like everything, cute wins."
I'm in the middle of adopting a teenage boy myself and would like to speak up for the kids that he's (probably inadvertently) putting down. Most of these teenage kids have no hope as it is ... making a statement like Willie did is the ultimate insult and would do nothing but make those children who are already scraping the bottom of the bucket, possibly lose any hope they might have had of being adopted.
All kids deserve a home. Teenagers are the most difficult to place for a variety of reasons (not all having to do with their outward appearance). Do yourself and a child a favor -- forget the "cute" and adopt a kid who desperately needs a family of their own.

Maybe by stating it so bluntly, he was trying to make people see that "cute" shouldn't be all that matters and that all kids, regardless of their looks, deserve a home and family.
Sadly, I have been to many of those adoption fairs in my quest to adopt, and he is right. The "cute" kids will have prospective parents swarming over them while the "not so cute" will sit alone. Same can be said about the shy kids. It's so sad that I stopped attending the fairs. I'll find my "forever" child some other way.
I do find it great that a celebrity, who probably could have "bought" his pick of infants, chose to adopt an older child.
I didn't read it that way. I don't believe he was putting any of those children down or judging them as human beings because of how they look. He was pointing out the sad fact that unfortunately in this society, looks are a factor in life whether it be right or wrong, or whether one is chosen even for adoption. I think he just meant that it was a sad state of affairs in having a child go through this "adoption fair" time after time after time in order to try and find a home.
What he said about it being like a pet fair did not surprise me at all. I adopted a child in Korea and when the mgr. of the orphanage asked what I wanted, he called for all the little girls between 2 and 4 to line up for my inspection. I left in tears, how does one tell one that they are ok and the rest are not worthy? I did not make a choice that day but had the adoption agency do it for me. I don't think that he was saying that the older kids were not worthy but was saying what the attitude of the older kids seemed to be. Perhaps it will wake up some people here in the US that all adoptees are not babies that are perfect in all ways. I did have a problem with my daughter when she reached age 15, after a lot of work I found out that she had attachment disorder and to be thankful for the good days that I had with her. Have had people suggest that I send her back.......no way........I did try to get help for us both but she refused. She finally ran away in the middle of the night after she turned 18 and now has 3 kids and is I don't know where. I will hear from her when she wants something from me. Do I regret the adoption...no never would do it again at the drop of a hat.
Buddy,
My heart goes out to you and I pray your daughter is safe and gets in touch with you soon. I can't imagine the worry you must be suffering.
I think adoption agencies should provide prospective parents with information about attachment disorder, especially when children have been in (for lack of a better word) "warehouse" environments like orphanages. From what I've heard, the disorder is quite common among children who have been in "the system" for a while; I imagine it's an involuntary psychological defense mechanism.
I don't think he was trying to put anyone down; sounded as if he was as horrified as any of us. But reality is, most of those teens don't get adopted, and they know it. It's very sad, and I can imagine in an "adoption fair" setting, that it could certainly be horrifying, which is what he said.
Well at least he did adopt an older child who even if he is cute would have been harder to find a permanent home for. It's sad that many teenagers will probably never have a home of their own. Even a 19 year old and even older still needs parents.

I do not see anything about a wife or mother- is he then a bachelor. Maybe gay?

What difference does it make if he's gay?
I have two grown sons so I never needed to take the adoption route, but after reading this article and the comments it breaks my heart to think he went to an adoption fair and could have his pick of children. When are these types of fairs held ? How does one get involved in this process ? I would be interested in maybe getting involved in this process and to give that ugly one sitting on the side knowing he will never get adopted a nice home and family life. It's true, this story hit home with me that every child deserves a loving home. It's like in school when no one picks you for their team to play. So sad, but definitely worth looking into. Does anyone have any information about this ?

Some information about these "kid" fairs ... in Washington State, you have to have an approved home study completed before you are invited to attend one of them. They are put on twice a year by NW Adoption Exchange (NWAE.org). I'm sure other states do the same thing. It's extremely time consuming to get to the point that you're actually approved to adopt but it's totally worth the effort. Go for it!!
I believe Willie Garson's comments to be cruel, humiliating and... honest. If anything, I would think these adoption fairs are worse than a pet fair could ever be. Imagine being a kid going to these things over and over, trying to sell yourself to a family, and being rejected, again. As for the fat, ugly kid? One of the most pathetic standards we Americans have is our unrealistic concept of beauty, combined with our intolerance of anything less. It surpasses even the slight consideration of the "real" person, or in this case, the "real" kid. Children have always been a reflection of their parents, and this feeds into the despicable situation of leaving behind the less comely people... of all ages. Sigh. Another thread in the tapestry of our society becoming frayed beyond repair? It's up to us.
Congratulations to the Garson family on the new "not so little" one!

To the person who commented on the nice man who just adopted the 8 year old boy about him not having a woman and was he a bachelor, or even was he gay. All I have to say is this, women have been raising children by themselves since who knows when, probably the beginning of time, and no one says one word about THAT, so don't worry about this man being single, gay, whatever, worry that not enough men want to adopt, worry about the other children that did not get adopted, or better yet, be happy that this man took a boy out of a lonely environment, and gave him a family, a life.
Why focus on the man who did the good deed of adopting a great little boy.
Sheesh...I am sick of ignorant posts.

Neglect is the worst form of child abuse. They quickly learn that no one really cares. Some don't even seem to develop a conscience.
Several years ago I had a problem with an "out of control" fourteen year old. Life (including divorce) and her behavior put her "at risk." I fought day and night just to keep her alive. (It worked)
I did a lot of research during those years. Looking for understanding and a glimmer of hope. My research indicates that a detachment disorder results from being neglected up to the age of about 9 months. If a child simply lies in a crib, is not held, cuddled, mirrored etc.. by this time, it becomes almost impossible for them to form correctly in an emotional respect. Some will suffer from a "failure to thrive" and simply dwindle away. One child I knew of had been fed chips and coke as an infant and took 14 years to die. Many of the children with diminished capacity come from these conditions.
I know people on a personal level that have suffered to a lesser degree, but to such an extent that they have trouble bonding LONGTERM in their adult lives. (Or trusting that people really care for them.)
