'Potter' Helps Prevent Teen Suicide

'Harry Potter' star Daniel Radcliffe hopes to save the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth through a "major donation" to The Trevor Project.

"It's extremely distressing to consider that in 2009 suicide is a top three killer of young people... It's vitally important that young people understand they are not alone and, perhaps even more important, that their young lives have real value," Radcliffe said.

The Trevor Project is a non-profit organization that operates the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth.

The executive director and chief executive officer of The Trevor Project said the organization is "incredibly grateful to Daniel for his truly inspiring and historic generosity and support,."

"He is setting a meaningful example for millions of young people around the world by embracing diversity and demonstrating that he cares deeply about the well-being of LGBTQ youth," Charles Robbins said.

I do believe that part of the money we earn should be spent towards helping a cause we are passionate about. One must respect an agency that reaches out to save someone from ending it all prematurely. Teen-age years are tough enough. And to be associated with something that people have difficulty understanding only makes it worse. It's hard to believe that in a few short weeks, I will begin my studies to become a therapist. Some of these adolescents may represent my clients. I've lost several friends to suicide. Ultimately, no one wins when this approach is chosen. Working through the dark clouds, to see daylight is worth it.
