Newton-John's Ex-Lover Alive and, Well, Wants to Be Left Alone

The case of the missing Olivia Newton-John ex-lover may be solved, if newly surfaced fax messages are to be believed.

A letter faxed on behalf of Patrick McDermott, missing since a 2005 fishing trip in California, declares that the cameraman is indeed alive and well, but relays his wishes for everyone to stop looking for him.

His disappearance left his 'Grease'-starring girlfriend heartbroken and fueled speculation he faked his death to avoid crushing debts.

Via Britain's Daily Mail, the message sent to private investigators reads: "Pat has asked that I portray to you his innocence. Pat has committed no crime. Pat simply wishes to be left alone. Let him live his life in peace and harmony. He is safe and has started anew again in a new place both physically and mentally."

McDermott vanished near San Pedro, Calif. in 2005 and was believed to have drowned after falling overboard. Yet there have been numerous sightings of him in Mexico, where he is said to be working as a yacht deckhand in the drifter-friendly town of Sayulita.

NBC's 'Dateline' hired Philip Klein -- a private investigator -- to look into McDermott. Klein believes Newton-John's ex faked his death in order to avoid debts and allow his son to benefit from a life insurance policy.

Investigators were hired to find McDermott, who reportedly owes child support for his teenage son with ex-wife, actress Yvette Nipar.

The fax asks those involved to "stop this search immediately" but the Daily Mail and investigators aren't revealing who sent the message.

According to the Daily Mail, he obtained a second passport with his birth name, Patrick Kim, and emptied out his life savings before vanishing.

Newton-John had been dating McDermott for nine years. She has since married businessman John Easterling.

Yes, its both sad and wrong to leave your loved ones without any notice. It does happen, and those of us left wondering how to communicate with them-my ex left with someone else-learn to pick up whatever pieces we can... Does it stink? Definitely, but you can't let them mess up your life that much... I paid off bills he left , and am slowly getting my life back, it took, and is taking, longer than I hoped. I'm glad Ms. Newton-John found someone who treats her better, she deserves a good man in her life...Let's just hope the son's mom gets some some support for his school and other expenses...

Oh, he wants to be left alone? He hurt a lot of people, cost a lot of pain, and there was a small fortune spent to try and find him! These thing compounded the problems he left behind. (for others)

Olivia is better off without him, even though he caused her pain. But, his son? Knowing such a sad person is your parent makes a kid question their own worth. So sad!

Some crazy could have sent that letter!! That's not proof he's still alive, people! Nutcases with nothing better to do pull these pranks all the time.

If he IS alive, he'll have to atone for abandoning his responsibilities....but until he shows himself in the flesh, no one really knows what happened to him.

How can you wish him luck. Obviously you didn't have to raise a child with no support. I did it with 2 kids because he wanted to run off and hide like a rat. Try to get them in court--Good Luck. If you can't find them you can't go to court.
I raised them working 2 jobs and no support and no contact. Well he passed away and is now debt free. Rest in Peace. Your children are grown and well.
Mr.Pat should face up to his responsibility, he too will meet his maker.

Lots of negative comments on an incomplete article. How do we even know the fax was real? Why even bother sending any correspondence after all this time? It's probably a fake. Can't condemn someone without all the facts.
