For Sale: Eternity with Marilyn Monroe

A small crypt located above Marilyn Monroe's final resting spot is up for sale and currently one of the most expensive pieces of real estate (on a per-square-foot basis) on the market!

The wife of deceased entrepreneur Richard Poncher is selling his grave in order to make some fast cash to help pay off the $1.6-million mortgage on her 1 3/4 acre Beverly Hills home, L.A. Times reports. The current price tag? $4.5 million and counting.

Using Marilyn Monroe's fame, Poncher's wife placed the grave site on Ebay. On the online ad, she writes, "Here is a once in a lifetime and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe... [It] is being vacated so as to make room for a new resident."

Poncher bought the crypt from Yankee great Joe DiMaggio during his 1954 divorce from Monroe. Afterward, Poncher then approached his wife with a request. "He said, 'If I croak, if you don't put me upside down over Marilyn, I'll haunt you the rest of my life,'" she recalls.

Right after the funeral, she told the funeral director of her husband's wish. "I was standing right there, and he turned him over," she said.

Poncher's wife is selling the real estate to help pay off her debt. "I can't be more honest than that. I want to leave it free and clear for my kids," she said.

Playboy's Hugh Hefner bought the crypt next to the actress in 1992 for $75,000. "I'm a believer in things symbolic," he said. "Spending eternity next to Marilyn is too sweet to pass up."

She had one talent; she could flow through the lens of a camera better than almost anyone before or after. Nothing in her young life prepared her for Hollywood; the studios were no longer in the parent business so she was left to fend for herself with no family support and few friends.

The eternally glamorous MM would surely not be interested in Poncher, still less in pathetic sleazebag Hefner, and exponentially still less in commentators here who think they are saying something by expressing a wish to pay not to be near MM.
