Rainn Wilson Talks Emmys, Badger Kings and Jack McBrayer With PopEater

Anyone who's watched 'The Office' will tell you that Rainn Wilson's Dwight Schrute character is one of the show's highlights. Wilson is so good, in fact, his deadpan and hyper-serious portrayal of Dwight scored him an Emmy nomination (his third) this year for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. PopEater was lucky enough to chat with Rainn via AIM to ask him all about his 'Office' work, what he thinks of his Emmy competition (sorry, Jack McBrayer) and how he would rule the world as a flesh-eating badger. PopEater1 (1:18:36 PM): So let's get right into it... Firstly, congrats on the Emmy nomination. How are you feeling this time around, being that it's your third nod?

rainnoffice (1:18:54 PM): I feel like Susan Lucci

rainnoffice (1:19:48 PM): You know, it's really a thrill. I mean I play an annoying, unlikeable, fascist nerd, kiss-ass and yet the academy keeps nominating me for the category

PopEater1 (1:20:09 PM): Perhaps they wish they had people like that working for them?

rainnoffice (1:21:01 PM): I think everyones had a boss (somewhat) like Michael Scott and everyone's had a classmate or co-worker (scarily enough) like Dwight Scrhrute

PopEater1 (1:21:35 PM): Do you find that most fans who meet you expect you to actually be like that in real life?

rainnoffice (1:22:46 PM): That is a constant. I get- Wow, you're really different than him!

rainnoffice (1:23:50 PM): And I always think... Did the producers really go out and find an annoying, beet-farming regimented dork to play the role? It's NOT a reality show! I'm an actor!!!

PopEater1 (1:24:16 PM): Hah. It's probably for the best that you're not like him, given that he's pretty much a social misfit

rainnoffice (1:24:44 PM): Too true. So happy that I'm not Dwight.

PopEater1 (1:24:58 PM): Getting back to your Susan Lucci comment... Did you have acceptance speeches ready for your other nominations? If so, can you pretty much recycle them should you win this time?

rainnoffice (1:25:58 PM): I was SOOOOO nervous last year when they were reading the names

rainnoffice (1:26:23 PM): Its a very particular kind of terror - the cartoon heart thumping OUT of your chest kind of fear...

rainnoffice (1:27:12 PM): and Part of the reason I was so mortified is I had a couple of lame jokes and NO speech ready. Man, I'm glad Piven nabbed his third trophy last year (kidding)

PopEater1 (1:27:40 PM): Are you all prepared for a possible win this year? Can we get a preview of what you might say?

rainnoffice (1:29:34 PM): Sure. "My Fellow Americans. I am SO honored that you have decided that I am the GREATEST actor in the history of the world. I would like to perform Hamlet's soliliquoy for you now... TO BE OR NOT TO (cue orchestra)

PopEater1 (1:29:59 PM): Perfect. Who do you think is your biggest competition in the category this year?

rainnoffice (1:30:58 PM): There's 5 other AMAZING actors nominated with me... The very sharp trophy could go to anyone

rainnoffice (1:32:29 PM): Neil Patrick Harris is masterful. Tracy Morgan is hysterical. Jack McBrayer is a horrible, horrible man who eats human babies. (i'm kidding) [he only eats alien and demon babies]

PopEater1 (1:33:15 PM): Well my next question was going to be if you wanted to talk any trash in good fun, but you beat me to the punch

rainnoffice (1:35:33 PM): Once I visited Mr. MacBrayer and he was worshipping Satan in his trailer, naked, in a pentacle of goats blood. And memorizing his lines

rainnoffice (1:35:46 PM): And sipping a soy latte

PopEater1 (1:35:58 PM): He does give off that vibe

PopEater1 (1:36:58 PM): Have you seen the 'Family Guy' video Emmy campaign ripping on 'The Office' and other competitors? http://www.aoltv.com/2009/08/19/stewie-really-really-wants-to-win-an-emmy/ Care to retort?

rainnoffice (1:37:55 PM): No. I love Family Guy. It's hysterical. And part of their charm is that they're willing to go anywhere and do anything for a laugh, including blugeoning a dog. Very funny.

rainnoffice (1:38:29 PM): They even referred to me as "That huge forehead guy from the Office" once. Love it.

PopEater1 (1:38:52 PM): The sincerest form of flattery, perhaps.

PopEater1 (1:39:26 PM): We were just talking this morning, and came to the conclusion that our favorite 'Office' episode might be when Amy Ryan was convinced Kevin was "special." Aside from 'Heavy Competition,' what's your fave?

rainnoffice (1:40:51 PM): I have so many fave episodes.

rainnoffice (1:41:14 PM): Being dressed as an elf and shoving a teapot in my nostril was a high point

rainnoffice (1:41:51 PM): THE INJURY was great. I get a concussion, vomit on my car and my personality changes and I become friends with Pam! Love it!

PopEater1 (1:43:19 PM): If you had to swap roles with a character on 'The Office,' who could you play the best and who would be the best Dwight?

rainnoffice (1:44:42 PM): JOhn Krasinski would be a better Dwight than me. I'm not exaggerating. He is a comic genius - stuck in the form of a hot/cool dude. Someday I hope he gets cast in some great, weird character roles! He's one of the best actors I've ever worked with.

PopEater1 (1:46:36 PM): Interesting. He seems to be on a pretty good path. OK, so next Twitter question. Warning, they get a little odd.

PopEater1 (1:46:45 PM): Do you have any good knock knock jokes? If so, any good ones not including the KGB?

rainnoffice (1:56:12 PM): I used to pick raspberries every summer through my teenage years out in Woodenville Washington

rainnoffice (1:57:07 PM): I assisted a "super" of a nearby building after school at a nearby apartment in the Chicago suburbs

rainnoffice (1:57:15 PM): I washed A LOT of dishes.

PopEater1 (2:03:03 PM): OK, one last follow-up that I can't resist. You can admit it now safely: When you were waiting tables, did you ever do anything foul to a complaining customoer's food or anything like that?

rainnoffice (2:04:08 PM): Never ever ever never. I can't even joke.

PopEater1 (2:04:31 PM): That's what we were hoping to hear. The thought that people do things like that is just too much to ponder.

rainnoffice (2:05:25 PM): That would betray a public trust even greater than that of a politician flying to Brazil for an affair with his Mistress while pretending to be hiking

PopEater1 (2:05:51 PM): I never expected that correlation, but kudos, sir.

PopEater1 (2:06:47 PM): Any last-minute things you'd like to let out before we wrap things up?

rainnoffice (2:07:22 PM): well... our computers on the set are all loaded with AIM

rainnoffice (2:07:40 PM): and we chat with each other incessantly as we're doing background work on the set
