According to the Vareckas, Butler "went on this rampage, shouting, 'That dog should be put down!'"
"I said, 'Your dog should be put on a leash.' He kept on going and going, ranting and raving. . . . He was being verbally abusive." Maria Varecka added, "He smacked the dog in the head. The dog's head went into the fence. I was shaking. The dog yelped. I said, 'Keep your hands off my dog! Why did you hit my dog?' He didn't say a word."

Dog-lover Butler sees the incident in a different light. His manager Alan Siegel described the conflict: "What happened was, Gerry was walking his dog, Lolita, who is this little, small pug, a teeny thing. You can hold her in one arm, she's that small. Then, suddenly, this greyhound, this huge, menacing dog, bites Lolita. She [Maria Varecka] and Gerry then have words. . . . [Then] the dog again goes over to Lolita and takes another bite."
TMZ reports that, after the second bite, Butler put his dog on a leash and began walking away, when the woman followed him. Butler intervened when the Greyhound attempted a third bite.
Siegel said Butler spent the next four hours at an Upper East Side veterinary hospital making sure that Lolita was no worse for wear. Reportedly, the pug is safe and healthy.
"People are so mean. They're just trying to milk this," Siegel concluded.

Wasn't there, didn't see what happened, but the law in New York City is keep your animal on a leash. If indeed the little dog was bit, I wold have rapped the other dog too. Its called defending your own. If your animal is on a leash you will have a better chance of getting them out of a situation then if they are off leash.

If a litttel midegt came up to you and started biting and nipping at you would you not kick it's ass? Your poorr littel mini dog, bo hoo. You peopl are comparing bascially 2 differnt species of animal. yeah tey are both dogs but one is about 25 times the size of the other so naturally when the littel animal starts aggravatign the bigger obne it gets put in it's palce. Little dogs are usually mean littel pricks.

Regardless, sounds like Mr. Butler's dog was off the leash.
It is more common for small dogs to bite than larger dogs.
I wasn't there, but I do know some dogs become defensive when on a leash and they're approached.
He shouldn't have laid hands on the dog unless he was defending his dog.

while that may be true, which would send you to the hospital? a chihuahua bite or a rottie bite? tbh though, this is an excuse large dog owners use to be irresponsible or even lax with training and think they are one upping small dog owners. please realize all dogs can bite in any given situation. any dog, even one you have trusted for years or that has certain breed characteristics can bite if put under stress or in new situations.
"Then, suddenly, this greyhound, this huge, menacing dog..."
Give me a break! I've had a greyhound. There isn't anything menancing about them!

Two greyhounds in my local dog park nearly killed a puggle last year. Apparently some small dogs may trigger a predatory response in greyhounds. And oh yes, the greyhounds' owners were obnoxious about the attack instead of apologetic.
I agre with you. Grayhounds are always such mellow dogs. I think he was just healouw because they had a bigger dog than he did. Someone should smack his head up against the fence and put a leash on him.
You are the sort of person whose dog will injure another animal or a child. It is a dog, not a kid, and it is instinctively going to attack small prey. I heard my 3 yr old screaming and ran around the corner of my house to see three pet dogs chasing him as prey. You are a danger to others until you understand that NO dog is 100% safe.
Racing greyhounds are either trained with electronic rabbits or real prey. If they're trained with real prey they could attack small animals. When you adopt a greyhound and have other small animals that's the first thing you ask, how were they trained. Mr. Butler obviously met a greyhound that can't be trusted around small animals.

Please do not post comments without merit, Greyhounds are trained in the US and UK with whirlygigs, and plastic bags on lures, NO LIVE PREY, it is illegal. Some Greyhounds are high prey, but when they are leashed are easily controlled, there are leash laws for a reason, ANY dog can lunge at another dog OFF LEAD. I have fostered countless Greyhounds over the years and have NEVER had any problems, also had a few smaller dogs in the mix, if something small runs by or approaches OFF LEAD, any high prey dog will want to investigate. Greys are obedient, loving companions, that just want a soft bed and a loving home, do not take that away from them because YOU are uninformed about the breed.
What the law is and what people do are not the same. I am surprised at the remarks concerning the benign manner of training greyhounds for racing when we hear so much about how badly they are treated, to the point where they need a rescue effort. Also, haven't you heard about Michael Vick? I have no question that on any day a given dog may attack. My husband was nearly attacked by a large dog on the opposite side of the street because my husband was carrying a walking stick. I told him to put it behind his back and the dog backed off. I also was within about a foot of having my throat attacked by a dog ON a leash which its owner could not control because of an icy street. If he owns a very small dog, first, for its protection it should be on leash, but also it is a target for large dogs, particularly hunting dogs.
I have two dogs, that is why you always should have your dog on a leash , PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!! If you are walking them outside they should be on a leash... It keeps your dog safe and the other dogs...So stop being a brat... AND SAY IT WAS YOUR STUPIDITY....
If Greyhounds were trained with live prey PETA and similar organizations would be all over the racing industry, get your facts straight.
Gerry BUTTler was indeed at fault for one reason and one reason only he was an irresponsible dog owner, whatever happened or didn't happen to his dog he is the only person to blame NO ONE else. The fact he realized his actions were a poor decision he along with his PR people and the movies PR people now must spin this story to make him look to be the victim. I was once a fan but no longer. The simply fact this man has no accountability for his actions is not only disturbing but WRONG. Disgusting. If Lolita was hurt so badly then why not produce some evidence to support this? Where is that? Oh there isn't any that's why. How kind of BUTTler to pay for someone else's veterinary care, again another episode of trying to save face. This random act of supposed kindness would have never taken place if he wasn't in jeopardy of looking bad.
This so called actor is has an anger management problem and his manager continuously makes up ridiculous stories in an attempt to do damage control. He is a horrible actor with a huge ego. I'm sure he just didn't want an ordinary dog invading his movie star space. And his dog should have been on a leash. Go back to Scotland!!!!!

I saw the couple on tv. They admitted that one of their greyhounds lunged at Butler's small dog. They claim his dog was off leash and their dogs were leashed. Which means they SHOULD HAVE been able to control their dogs and keep them away from his dog. What morons for walking their dogs, who clearly have aggression issues, right over to a smaller dog ( they were poking around the movie trailers). They seem like complete jerks. They need to not just leash their beasts but actually control them while leashed. I hope the pug's ok.

Think about what you wrote; I have a dog in a leash, and another one comes up that is not on a leash. The unleashed dog is uninhibited and if it was being attacked would run if being overpowered, the leashed dog obviously would stay on the leash. Get it? Small dogs are often aggressive, especially when their owners pick them up and coo at them when their dogs act inappropriately, reinforcing the negative behavior. It is the owners responsibility to know their animal and act accordingly to ensure no conflict.
My wife and I have fostered or parented more than 10 different greyhounds in our home over the last seven years. We work with a greyhound rescue agency, fostering these dogs as they end their racing careers due to injury or age. Most greyhounds are calm, gentle, loving dogs to all people and animals.
But some greyhounds are unable to turn off their genetic need to chase and attack prey. This is one aspect of their normal behavior, but unfortunate and sometimes tragic when it happens. Adoptive greyhound parents are told to always maintain control of their dogs on a short lead during any walks outside their residence. As "sight hounds" they are instinctively looking for prey and if a small dog runs into their space, they might do what comes natural. Most don't, but some do. If this happened, and the greyhound parents didn't control their dog, then the blame lies with both parties.
However, if Mr Butler was foolish enough to let his tiny dog run around off-lead, then he was asking for something like this to happen. And this could have happened with any large breed of dog, not just a greyhound.
The fact that Butler's own attorney says the pug is "safe and healthy" indicates the greyhound either didn't actually bite Butler's dog in the first place, or simply "mouthed" the little pug as a form of play. Believe me, if a greyhound really wanted to hurt that pug, it would not take more than one try, let alone three.
Either way, hopefully both he and the greyhound owners have learned an important lesson and there won't be a repeat performance.

It's strange-I used to take care of a greyhound and a collie/golden retriever mix every day. I would let them out in the backyard. It was always the collie mix that loved treeing squirrels. The greyhound ignored them. And yes, he used to race. For 4 years.
