as a person who has studied the genre for her masters in literature, you all haters really need to do some reading ont he subject and expose yourselves to the various books..may i suggested the excellently researched book Blood Read- this is a literary and sociological history of vampires through the various mytholgies and centuries.
Many things have changed, the orginal vamps could walk in the shadows of day - they did not burst into flames, but would be weakend seriously by sunlight-the original meaning was SONlight as in God's son not the star/sun.
and they are UNDEAD not dead or living but somewhere inbetween. they also have immortal souls--the study of this genre really is extremely interesting, adn fun. one of the key things is that the "current" vampire myth is a reflection of the "current" society. as the title of my thesis was "the Domestication of Dracula".
Vampires are bi-sexual by nature-there are like tamed lions and as all creatures they have the 3 F's so to speak--Food, fight, f&*%king. almost all the genre books touch upon this. sometimes it is clean up as in Blood Ties, were Henry Fitzroy had both a male lover, Tony and a female, Vicky. In Moonlight, the homosexual factor was lightly brushed.[i HIGHLY recommend this two tv series] However, in HBO, there are no hold's barred.
true the HBO show has departed from the books, so it goes.my issue is that they have exploited the Maenaed Maryann, she and her sexual abandon was but a small part of one of the books, HBO in its way has made it into an orgy, hopefully they will tire of this and get back to the really good and fun, and funny, storylines of the book series.
and remember folks--it is myth and fantasy, enjoy the ride!
and oh yeah, go and read some of the genre. . .enjoy!

Oh My God....I Swear All Ya'll People Have Ya'lls Panties In A Wod. Sex Is Sex....& Yeah There's Alot Of It Which Im Glad....No One Here Must Not Have Much Of A Sex Life... Must Be Overbearing- Stricken Insecure Virgins. I Feel Sorry For You. The Show Is Fantastic...I Honestly Think It Keeps Getting Better & Better Every Episode. Ive Read All Of Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse Books...Yeah I Know It Doesnt Follow The Book...Bits In Pieces Of It Does But Im Glad It Doesnt Cuz Who Wants To See The Show Happen Exactly Like It Happens In The Book. On The Show The Characters Get Expanded....Not Like In The Book It Only Focus On Sookie. I Love Alan Ball I Think He's Done An Amazing Job...Charlaine Harris Sure Thinks So Even Anne Rice Loves The Show!
So If You Don't Like The Show Why Waste Your Time Commenting On It...Leave The Damn Page!

I have watched True Blood. The thing that bothers me is the same thing that bothers me about all the recent vampire stories that are being shoved down our throats. That is the simple fact none of them have brought vampire lore into the 21st century. They are all just derivative versions of what Anne Rice started in 1976 w/Interview. The idea of the sexually ambiguous, beautiful vampire was one of her many contributions to vampire lore. Before that, the best looking vampire was Bela Lugosi. If anything, the only new thing these recent vampire stories have added is the actual act of sex itself (as opposed to drinking blood being a stand in). Quite frankly, I think the addition of all the sex says more about what the average TV/movie viewer likes to see than about the creators of these stories being perverts. I personally liked the vampires in the Buffy TV show, and they had sex. I just thought the idea of soul vs. soul-less was an interesting twist.

Ok I feel the need to respond to all of this..first of all this is entertainment people!! And second of all everyone knows that HBO goes for lots of sex and steamy scenes so if you don't want to watch the show don't frickin watch it. I watched the series first and than read all of the books which I loved! I read them all in like two weeks they were soo good but life is about change!!i'm going to get over the fact that Tasha is not the same character etc and you guys should be able too(thats what being an adult is like). And for those of you saying you are sick of vampire stuff well obviously you haven't read the Twilight Series or Sookie Stackhouse series because these are great books, I'm an educated person, I've read everything from Goosebumps as a kid to War and Peace and I really enjoyed all of these books, they are well written and very entertaining. So save your ignorant comments for someone else who actually cares about what you think.
