Mischa Barton: I Hit 'Rock Bottom'

After being placed under psychiatric hold for a month, Mischa Barton is coming clean about her hospitalization. Blaming her hectic schedule and "terrible" wisdom tooth surgery, Barton says her life just got really bad, Time Out New York reports.

"I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom about things and have to get the most stressed out just to feel better again. I got completely stressed out and couldn't handle everything, and now I feel really in control," Barton revealed.

"I went through a tough spot where everything compounded on me, and it was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once," she said.

The 'Homecoming' star said before she started filming the CW show 'The Beautiful Life,' she had been traveling abroad "for contract stuff" and then had a wisdom tooth surgery that went wrong and is "still just healing."

"I had to get through it without proper painkillers because I couldn't take those during work," she said of the procedure. "So it's been a nightmare."

Barton denies she had a mental breakdown but says the whole ordeal "was pretty bad." The 23-year-old actress admits, "I'm not sure I'm capable of a full-on nervous breakdown, but it was pretty bad. It didn't last that long. It was more about the pain."

"The funny thing is, if all this happened in New York, no one would care. New York lets you be who you are, and people aren't as judgmental. I'm so glad to be back here," she added.

She is a 23 year old young lady who obviously had more going on than just a problem with wisdom teeth and exhaustion. Did it ever occur to all of those who are being so ignorant and cruel that maybe, just maybe, something has happened in her life that she does not want the entire world to know about? Maybe something terrible happened years ago and she never dealt with it properly and she finally couldnt hide it anymore? I am glad that she is doing better and hope nothing but the best for her and everyone else that has the courage to take that very first scary step to getting their life back on track. A few months ago, AOL was critizing Ms. Barton for obviously seeking out publicity by being in the ocean, in a bikini. Now, AOL uses Ms. Barton for more fodder for being on a mandatory hospital-hold. Mischa Barton gets more publicity from AOL than any other website. AOL, you can't have it both ways, and still use Mischa Barton for obvious publicity. It's called hypocrisy.

I had 2 upper wisdom teeth extracted when i was in my early 20's and the pain was unbelievable. My face swelled up and i lost weight and could not eat for 2 weeks. I couldn't even keep the pain killers down.
We're not all the same so don't judge people.

Some of you people are showing a total lack of insight. Just because her work doesn't involve scrubbing floors to ear her nightly bowl of gruel doesn't mean she and the other actors and actresses don't work long hard hours,or that it isn't hard work. Imagine having to spend 12 hours a day in a highly emotional state because the character you are playing is crazy,a prisoner in prison,being hunted by a psycho,hunted by the police,just saw their child murdered,etc,etc,etc,and then get back to me.

There is a reason actors and actresses have more emotional/mental breakdowns than bus drivers or carpenters. They spend their whole lives emerging themselves in roles that not only aren't "them" in real life,but may even be counter to everything they really are. Some do this so well and so often they even forgot "who" they are in real life,and no longer have a real life. Their whole life is wrapped around pretending to be somebody else.

Very few people are emotionally equipped to handle that sort of stress and thrive in both their careers and their personal lives. Meryl Streep is one,but most aren't as talented as she is OR as stable. She never lost sight of the fact that she is only playing a role,and this saved her sanity.
