HE IS NOT ROYALTY!!! OMG, a Lord, the title can also be bought. Our family lines go to Mary Queen of Scotts and Prince Charlie, by the way this is "more" true to Royalty than your article; thus stating we do have blue blood and if we wanted to pay the thousands of pounds, we would be able to gain the title on a piece of paper, like this article, he "paid" nothing to do with Royalty!!

Jeez doesn't anyone check their facts at AOL before posting stories?
Henry VIII did have a daughter named Mary Tudor, but she had no children. Henry VIII didn't have ANY grandchildren by his other children (Edward VI and Elizabeth I) either.
This Charles must be descended from Henry VIII's sister, Mary.
Get your facts straight AOL before you post stories.

NEWSFLASH!!
The Earl of Devon is *NOT* royal - period!
Only members of the monarch's family are Royal.
Holders of Peerage titles are Nobel- but their spouses and children are not, which means the new kid won't even be Noble until his father dies and he gets the title.

Just out of curiosity... how many people are basing their "facts" on Showtime series or a horrible Scarlett Johansen movie?? That, all by itself, is REALLY funny!

Well I see Lil Wayne, AKA a nobody, untalented rapper, has been active in breeding season again, getting a girlfriend pregnant while diddling another hapless, ignorant celebrity hopping female groupie. I wonder how much this will cost us under the new Washington sponsored medical care for everyone system.

1) Only the monarch's direct line is considered royalty.
2) Under the Monarch, the descending order of "Nobility" is 1) Dukes (usually 2nd and other younger sons of a monarch, 2) Marquis or Marquess (marcher lords on the borders of the kingdom) and Earl, a title comparable to Count in Europe.
3) Lesser titles (Baron, Viscount) are considered aristocracy.
3) Can you try to actually research something before you print it? How about DeBett's? (The authority)

Writing only of Great Britain:
Actually there are 2 types of Dukes... Royal Dukes... whose titles have throughout history been connected with the reigning family... Of these the Duke of York is usually 2nd in succession to the Prince of Wales (who is also Duke of Cornwall). There is also Duke of Clarance (many thought Prince Edward would get this one as it has been in abeyance since the death of Edward VII's son, Edward. However, it often goes to the Prince of Wales' eldest son. So we may one day see a Prince William, Duke of Clarence. For Prince Edward they revived the very ancient title of Earl of Wessex.
However, there are also non-royal dukes... such as Duke of Norfolk (who is the premiere duke in England) & Duke of Argyll (the premiere Duke of Scotland). These titles have very ancient histories that go back to medieval power bases that rivaled the monarchies of England & Scotland. Then there is Duke of Marlborough, a title created for the John Churchill by Queen Anne.
While Marquess is a more exclusive title than Earl in Gt Britain, it is a title that is not native to England. It has always been sort of an oddity in Britain... most were created by the monarch as a "reward" or to give a particular person & his family a perpetual ranking "position." Basically, from the mid-1400s on, it was used to break the power of the true English Earls & Barons (In Medieval England Earl & Baron were virtually synonymous). Many Marquessates are 2ndary titles tied to Dukedoms & are borne as courtesy titles by the eldest son & heir of the Duke... just as many bear the title of Viscount as eldest son & heir to an Earl.
Earl was a more ancient English (Saxon Jarl) title... & more often it was an Earl who was a Marcher Lord. The various Earldoms had ancient (pre-Norman Conquest) lands connected with the title.
The Marcher Lords along the Welsh border were the Earls of Chester, Gloucester, Pembroke, Shrewsbury, & Hereford. On the Scottish border it was the Earl of Northumberland (the Percy Family, later merged into Duke of Northumberland) & the Bishop of Durham. A higher ranking of Earl (often merged later with a Dukedom) was a Count or Earl Palatine (the Earl of Chester was one). Such an Earl, although owing fielty to the King, was autonomous in his rule over his lands.
The 2 main Peerage book publishers are DeBrett's & Burke's.
To the author of the above article:
Why make this linkage?
>
Very curious connection. Queen Mary I had no issue. The Courtenays are an ancient noble family with countless connections throughout the British & European aristocracy. So surely you could have found a better linkage. I might add that the Courtenays are also one of those families by which Americans most often can connect to the noble and royal houses of Britain & Europe.
Also, to be British royalty one must have a particular title & position within the House of Windsor. For example, HRH Princess Anne's children are not royal... or even nobility. They are mere commoners... entitled to nothing more than Mr. & Miss.
The only real connection that I can think of between a Courtenay & Mary I is that Edward Courtenay, Earl of Devon (5th creation) was a distant cousin to Mary I & Elizabeth I & was considered as a potential suitor for each (but never seriously). He was a descendant of the House of York via Catherine, the daughter of Edward IV.

My goodness, just because you are born a Lord does not make you royalty! Who on earth wrote this one!

As far as I know being Lord Devon does not constitute being royal. Two very different things. The aristocracy are commoners. The late Princess of Wales married Prince Charles and was given royal status, but until that time she was just Lady Diane. Also, Henry Vlll's daughter, Mary Tudor, had no offspring, neither did her sister Queen Elizabeth 1.

The Earls of Devon are not royalty, they are nobility. There appears to be no royal blood in the long history of the title (which has changed families numerous times as earls either were executed as traitors and the title attainted -- declared non-existent in their family -- or died without male descendants. Later, the title was recreated in a different family, or restored to the former family.
