Kathy Griffin Struggles With Surgery, Diet

Comedian Kathy Griffin is opening up about her struggles with low self-esteem -- which lead her to try plastic surgery and weight loss diets. After moving to Hollywood, Griffin was pressured to look perfect and had her first surgery, a nose job, at age 26.

"I was told repeatedly, 'You would be pretty if it weren't for that nose. You'd work more if it weren't for that nose.' You would think I had a nose the size of Texas. I was young and impressionable and started to believe it, so I got a nose job," she told PEOPLE. And that was only the beginning.

During Griffin's big break on Brooke Shields' sitcom 'Suddenly Susan,' she felt pressure to slim down. "I lost 15 lbs. friggin fast in season 1. But being on television, I was never thin enough. [Being on TV] told me that clothes didn't come in anything larger than a four. That got to me," she said.

Griffin became obsessed with her weight taking back-to-back step aerobics classes, starving herself all day and then binging at night. And the diet pills she used were like, "full-on illegal speed," she joked. "I took it to lose weight, which is not very smart. I just felt three times as hungry afterward," she said.

Finally, Griffin decided to go under the knife for liposuction. But complications from the procedure nearly killed her. "I want women to know that this is what lipo looks like. Like, are you sure you don't want to just work out a little more?"

"What I can't figure out is why I wasted time worrying about my looks. I am a comedian. I'm not on the runway in Milan. Believe it or not, people don't come to see me really thinking I'm going to look like Jennifer Aniston," she said.

Today, Griffin is 5 feet 3 inches tall and 115 lbs. "Staying in shape is a struggle. I struggle with it every day. I just came from a very healthy lunch but the whole time I was having the healthy lunch I wished I was having cupcakes. It's not a simple thing. I have to watch what I eat and I have to work out quite a bit," Griffin said.

A good start to what, Mike? If you don't like her, don't go see her or watch her show. You have that choice. I think she is hysterically funny and I have seen her live show many times.

And to all you whiners commenting below, I have a right to my opinion. As you do yours. And hey thanks for permission to NOT SEE HER SHOW. As if I needed it.
I don't get this average foul-mouthed woman. Who cares what size she is, she is not a movie star or a model. She is not funny, but coarse and abrasive and anyone who likes her is weird, just my opinion.

Everyone who likes her is wierd? Get over yourself and the name calling.
I am as normal as they come, 2.5 kids, a house with pets, work an 8-5 job Monday to Friday and a member of the local Moose Lodge. I think she is hilarious and yes, she could lighten up on the harshness of her show but she is honest and I like that.

Wish she would just go away....but if she doesn't just go away, maybe we could just not see her popping up everywhere. Of course, everyone has a right to like her if they want. But there are very few of those because she is a foul-mouthed, sarcastic b***h with a negative vibe. And she litters the landscape like a McDonald's bag alongside a scenic highway. I just wish she wasn't there.

I dohat if there was a picture of you on the internet?n't understand why people are so critical of others. No one is perfect, and what goes naround comes around. Negative people are always trying to find fault with others.
What if there were pictures of you on the internet for all of us to judge?
People are the way we are, or thwe way they want to be.
Celebs get judged too much, I thin that it would be much better for them to stay away fron the media press. The media and press always have something negative to say about the stars, and should be more worried about how they would feel being exploited lie that. The press and media are way too involved with everything, and should become more positive and maybe when people read up on these issues, we wouldn't be so negative.

She, unlike most of Hollywood, doesn't kiss the asses of big, powerful stars, rather, she takes them down a notch or two back to a human level with the rest of us. Only those of us with open minds understand that about her act and love her for it.
