Janet's First Words Since Brother's Death

"My brother is, I mean was ... You have to forgive me, because it's really hard to believe he's passed."

Janet Jackson lost her older brother on June 25 in a blow to America's most famous musical family. Now, for the first time since his death, the clan's youngest sibling is opening up in Harper's Bazaar magazine about the devastating loss and its fallout, her bond with Michael and she reveals personal memories about the King of Pop including their last hours together.

"We had so much fun that day," she said of May 14, the last day she saw Michael. The family was having a big get together, complete with rowdy kids and a Thai food meal. "We kept calling each other after and saying how great it was." More excerpts from Janet's first interview after the jump.

What Made Michael Tick: "He loved to laugh. The last time we were together, he'd laugh so hard, he would just start crying. Sometimes his humor would be corny, sometimes dry. He loved the Three Stooges, he loved slapstick, he loved Eddie Murphy in his silly comedies. He loved to have fun. He loved to play."

If She Had One More Day With Him: "I'd relive that moment we had when we were kids, do our little run: We'd wake up, feed the animals, spend the entire day together."

Taking Care of Her Older Bro: "He'd have the same red shirt, the same black pants, the same white T-shirt. Mike was very simple. When I was 14 years old, I would shop for him. [Michael was then 21 and a megastar.] I washed his clothes, cleaned his room. When Mother would go out of town, she'd say, 'I'm leaving you in charge. Take care of Mike.' I would head home from school, see what he needed, then go straight to the stores ... You know something else? He loved to wear his shoes all the way down. His penny loafers would have huge holes in the bottom."

On Paris' Comments at MJ Memorial: "I was really proud ... People said to me that Michael's daughter speaking really gave them a sense of how he was as a father, in her words. Paris is incredibly smart; they are all so smart. She's a sweet girl. The kids are doing well. They're with all their cousins; that family love will keep them going."

Ignoring the News Following MJ's Death: "I haven't watched the news in weeks. I had to ask my chef, How's Obama doing? I haven't read a newspaper. On top of that, [we've lost] a family member."

What's Next for Her: "You know, I never look back on what I've done unless I'm asked, but I remember Mike saying, 'You need to stop and enjoy it. Think about everything you've done, all that you've accomplished' ... But there's so much more I want to do."

I get so sick of the people who COME to these boards and whine about, who cares, I'm sick of hearing about it, I'm sick of reading about it. If the boards bother them so much....WHY COME HERE ?

I think everyone just needs to sit back and think about what just transpired here. A family lost a beloved brother, uncle, father, son and friend. The only thing that makes it any different than any other family is that they are celebrities. Their status in life is irrelevant and so is the color of their skin or the fact that Michael had his share of problems. EVERY family has some kind of problems. Theirs are just made public because of the jobs they chose. No matter whether they got along all the time or not, in the end they still love and miss Michael. Sometimes you don't realize how much someone really means to you until they are gone! If they are going to his funeral in style, so what! They have worked to get where they are in life, and I am sure they have all made sacrifices to get where they are. And on the subject of whether members of the family are just now speaking out, they are in mourning for crying out loud. Let them grieve! You would want the same courtesy!

How does Beat It and Billy Jean make MJ the king of pop? It wasn't the music, it was Pepsi that made people believe he was a superstar. The gullible masses will believe anything the corporate TV sponsors want them to believe.

Michael could not be saved by anyone but himself, people. He had deamons for years. I agree with you Chan. Janet has been there for the whole freakin family. What a burden on her shoulders! What a burden on them all to lose their claim to fame. I say that not to chastize them, but I believe that in all humanity. That family has grown up together through it all and have come away better people. I wish I could befriend them and prove that truth. In my 37 years on this planet, breathing this air, I have never been more devastated than with the loss of this human's life. His giving heart and purity of child-like trust in others is RARE and needs to be brought back to this human race. My heart is forever broken and a hole will remain in my heart & soul over his loss until I can meet him in heaven.
Those who read this: take heed in yourselves. We are way too selfish, all of us. Giving back is the key to bringing this world together as one and back to a peaceful future.

First of all the judgements need to stop! Take a look at you'r own life before judging somebody's else's life. Micheal Jacskson has done so much for this world then anyone I know. How about giving some respect to the family exspecally Katherine the mother that has brought this angel into the world (MJ) and he gave so much to the world. Music his heart n soul that he made his life to entertain us and each one of his songs has touched all of us in some way. This man has taught the world how to come together as one. We lost the King of Pop a father, a son, a brother, a friend our true hero. The world will never be the same. God Bless the family I"m truely sorry for you'r lost. My heart goes out to the children who Micheal raised and has son a good job and tore my hear when seeing Paris share her tears with the world of losing her father. Micheal's music will live forever on in each of our hearts. Rest in peace Micheal Jackson thanks for everything you have done we love you.

I knew that MJJ's death would be especially hard JDJ because you could always tell they had a special connection. I personally love both of them. I hope everything begins to settle a little, so Janet can give us some new banging tunes. Peace.

Some of you that think the Jackson's show off thier money, seem to forget just how hard they ALL worked growing up! What we all saw in the public eye, was Nothing compared to the Many, many hour's, thier Insane, abusive father, put them through practicing day and night 6 day's a week! They were a harder working family than The Osmond's were at that time! No-one ever say's anything about them, that's not Near as bad as what everyone's trying to put The Jackson's down for! They've ALL worked soo hard for MANY, MANY, year's! They gave us Countless hour's of Pure entertainment! Not like the "supposed" entertainment some of these Quicky so called singers and Rappers of today do! Do ANY of you think you could take hour's of one of those groups? I Think Not! I bet you could sit through Hour's of the Jackson's, and ache for more! Just my opinion!

I think Janet didn't want to comment on her brother while he was alive, simply cause he was alive to talk for himself. Not to mention his legal troubles and what not.
I am very proud that even in the light of such sadness that this family has shown such stregnth in the light of a lot of the negative things coming out of peoples mouths.
If people would just do their own thing and not worry bout the rest~

I agree with Wendy--why didn't she take him to rehab on that last day? They all knew he was heavy into drugs. Everyone in the public knew it how could they not? They should have done something for him LONG before this point.

I just want to point out that when Michael was alive, Janet refused to talk about him on interviews. Now that he's gone, it appears she'll talk to whoever is willing to give her a cover. Pretty depressing, actually.
