Why We Fully Endorse Ellen on 'Idol'

Her talk show is head-and-shoulders above everything else on daytime TV (sorry, Bonnie Hunt), she's a die-hard fan of the show and she completely fills the nice person quota at the judging table. 'Idol' needs a complementary buffer to Simon Cowell's constant sneering, and Ellen's how-can-you-not-love-her temperament seems perfect to fill that seat.
'Idol' has banked too much on insulting auditioners and contestants in the past. You know you're guilty of tuning into the audition shows simply to watch the train wrecks. We truly hope Ellen's attitude puts the brakes on the name-calling, eye-rolling and other shenanigans that tend to dumb down 'Idol' and make it less of a singing competition and more of a finger-pointing contest. You're better than that, 'Idol.'
The only downside we can foresee is that DeGeneres, unlike all of the other judges, doesn't come from a music background. Contestants taking criticism from someone who isn't in the biz may not go over that well. However, we think it could also be refreshing, as she could lend a hand by being more focused on things other than singers being "pitchy" (Mental note: start a "pitchy" count for the season), like stage presence, style and general likability. Because think about it: Is it really the singing that makes 'Idol' contestants popular? Taylor Hicks, anyone? Jennifer Hudson being booted off? Hopefully those make our case.
So, Ellen, we welcome you with open arms to the 'Idol' community. Your track record makes us think you'll be nothing short of stellar on the show, and we think others should give you the same leeway and wait and see what happens when 'Idol' premieres in January.

Just one question. What is her musical background? Artist? producer? writer? From a critical standpoint, what can she trully ad? Just wondering
Reply
Uggg, this is gonna be ridiculous. I tune in for singers and serious critiques not for a comedy act. This show is turning into a circus. I just cannot take it seriously now. Boring.
She is a lesbian and a liberal nutcase. That is all that is required.
I agree with you 100% This is a MUSIC Contest. She has not music background. This is saying that every person who is a HUGH Idol fan had the qualificaftions to be a judge!!!That's two cents!!!
Her qualifications? A music consumer maybe. She is part of the population that makes or breaks performers!
Nothing,She is a freak. I will not be watching the show any more.
What is simons Musical Background ? He hates country music , which was stolen from the black man, when it was called the blues...or folk music, yes obamas ancestors are the ones who created , all popular music , country..rock..metal ..rap... and everything else.. Randy jackson is the only one with any real musical talent ...Ellen will be for comedy relief..and that is fine ...
To John that said: Just one question. What is her musical background? ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Didn't you read the article? It said she had no experience in any of this. I have never watched the show before, but I will certainly start doing so, now that Ellen will be on it.
Humor........she can add humor. Ellen can make the whole judging thing a big joke!
roy
F-ck that stupid show.
The recipe for American Idol is as follows: You take bunch of talentless loonies running around for camera time, talentless critics like Simon Cowell, a handful of talented people, many of whom are disregarded for the most superficial reasons you can imagine, throw in a handful of scandals, rig the votes and serve.
Ellen deserves better.
She's adds a point of view...
What really did Paula add?
Your dead wrong American Idol Sucks everything you have claim about Idol is lie and you can't back up your claims without lying. People on Idol are very talened there not talentless as you have claim American Idol Sucks which is another lie. American Idol is a great show so you don't know what your talking about.
I'm always right.
Great question. I really enjoy Ellen's daily show, but as judge of music talent? I guess they are looking for a few more laughs on the show.
What can she add? How about objectivity...I mean after all, she's one of us. And WE'RE supposed to be the ones picking the winner...right?
OH...to say nothing of comic relief.
What is she going to judge, if the entertainer is "gay". It's for certain she knows nothing about talent.
If you ever watched the Ellen show you would know the she loves music and she showcases new talent on her show. She will be a great asset for AI. As for Paula's musical background, she came from the generation of the one hit wonders. Her talent is dance not music. She just had the right contacts to get into singing.
The answer to your questions are ZERO. But American Idol will still get its 40 million viewers a show. Look at it this way. Rush Limbaugh has NO political experience but he still gets 20 million listeners a day....Kinda sad when someone with NO experience at all has followers huh? ONLY in America can someone with NO backround or experience garner that much attention. Yes, empty barrels do make the most noise.
The show is not called "America's Best Singer", it's called "American Idol". The winners are selected by the public and it makes brilliant sense to have Ellen join the show--someone with a huge following who will bring in her fans to the show, as well as someone who herself is a huge fan of music (and the show) and who will be the one judge to most relate to the millions of people who really do decide the winners. I can't actually believe she agreed to do it--major coup by AI
Yeah, because a musical background is more important than anything else. Paula, Randy, and Kara all have backgrounds in the musical field and we all know how great they are at judging Idol.
I like Ellen and I'm interested to see what she'll bring to the table.
OMG give her a chance...Enough of the name calling grow up!
