Simon on Ringo Diss: Just Havin' a Laugh!
Simon Cowell picked the wrong week to speak poorly of the
Beatles. The
'American Idol' judge known for his unfiltered flapper said that if the Fab Four had taken part in his British talent show 'The X-Factor,' he would have rejected the poor blokes because of their drummer,
Ringo Starr.
But now he tells
RadarOnline.com he was just having a laugh, and meant no disrespect to the band, which has a video game and remastered LPs out this week.
Simon eats crow, after the jump.
"Regarding my comments on the Beatles, it was a joke. I have always said they were the group I have always wished I had signed."
Cowell's original zing of the Beatles: "We'll take those three – Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison, but you'd probably have to lose the drummer. With Ringo around, I'm afraid we would have said 'bad news'."
He also cleared up a report alleging he declined signing the Spice Girls back in the day.
"In fact, I offered the girls a recording contract before they were signed and actually offered to double the offer they had on the table."

the fact that he wanted to sign the spice girls show how little this clown knows about music. and ringo is one of the finest drummers ever.

He actually knows quite a bit about the music business. The Spice Girls weren't a great talent, but they made gobs of money, and that's what the business is about. That's why there's so much crap/rap out there, because people buy it. American Idol isn't solely about talent, it's about looks and how promotable the performer is. I think Simon was making more of a joke on himself, about how wrong he would have been in judging Ringo's talent and the difference betwen the industry now versus then
If Simon Crowell had his way we wouldn't have The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, U2 and a host of other great artists. Simon basically has a Broadway mentality and taste, which is only a small part of what makes great pop music. Unfortunately, because of the popularity of the show his narrow opinions get far too much attention. In general, especially considering the amount of promotion Idol artists are fronted, only a couple have done particularly well.
Simon's opinion of Ringo is also meaningless. History speaks much louder than Simon Crowell. People will sing Beatle songs, and remember the drum part to :Ticket To Ride" long after Simon has been forgotten.

I know Ringo doesn't have the star power of Ruben Studdard or Taylor Hicks but give the guy a break.

I sincerely hope your joking.
According to the other Beatles, Ringo never practiced yet, what he did as back-up for the Beatles songs was totally appropriate. A good artist compilments other artists. Hear "You've Got To Hide You Love Away".... "No Reply".
As for the Spice Girls? Just as our society has become kicked in the head, so has music. I do not even recognize The Spice girls as musicans.
And Cowell, born in 1959, was 4 or 5 when the Beatles hit and probably didn't have a clue, re: his remarks he still doesn't.

Let's see...Simon the great genius. besides not signing the beatles, I'm sure he would have passed on Tom Petty...can't sing. Janis Joplin...doesn't have the look, Jimi Hendrix...what is he a pimp? Elvis Presley...too much a country hick...I could go on but you get the point. I shudder to think the fabulous talent being passed over because they don't match the cookie cutter design.
it's not all his fault, todays music machine just wants good looking young people, talent is not necessary.sad state of affairs really.
i know, it's all Obama's fault!

Who cares about the Beatles anymore,
is the younger generation so vapid that they have
to go back 40 years.
the beatles have alway been over rated.

you certainly don't have to like the beatles music but YES, this young generation of reality tv (like american idol) and cookie cutter music, is vapid. i wish more musicians of today would go back 40 years to get a clue. while some artists of today are worthy, most are only wanting their 15 minutes of fame and have no real talent yet become famous because of scandal. it's a shame to be a apart of such an uneducated generation.
I think the significance of the Beatles lies in what came after them. Sure, in their day the members of the Beatles were no "super great musicians" (though McCartney is now) but the technical innovation in the studio and functioning as a band resulted in much of way music is played, recorded and fashioned in the years following their 1970 demise. And that's what is often praised about the group and not so much their musicianship.
Frisk......When you stop and think about it...here some nearly 45 years later the Beatles still do matter! Now I don't know who you listen to or enjoy musically...but if they are as important 45 years from now....then you know music.....but right now....Learn your history...and honestly you mean to say you don't like ABBEY ROAD?
If you listen to music, today, you probably have the Beatles to thank. Double tracked vocals, electic 12 string, other insturments rather then just the usuals, backwards music, feedback, various and many studio innovations as well as song structures.
Music today would be very different if not for them.
Now if you mistakenly think that Jay Z or Kanye ("Bush hates white people, you ok for a white girl)have a lick of musical ability, i have just wasted my time.
You are obviously joking just to rise the hair off people's necks! But if you are serious, I have nothing to say to you. I'll let the Beatles music speak volumes and volumes and volumes and volumes for itself! And it will continue doing so for eternity! Other than Elvis Presley who else will live on forever???
Frisk, Anyone that knows anything about music knows on one side you have the Beatles and on the other is everyone else. These four guys were so creative and groudbreaking and not just in their music, that every band before or since cant hold their guitar straps. Thats just the way it is. They will be heard longgggggg after we our all gone.
Your comments reflect the fact that today's listeners are ignorant of what great music is all about. The abysmal unimaginative, and lack creative individuals that make up today’s pop culture have contributed very little to the body of music. It is far easier for today’s “artists’ to ‘re-master’ tracts from previous artists, or spit in a microphone making the same redundant sounds with a mixture of poorly played instruments accompanied by obscene and nonsensical lyrics. In order to understand and appreciate the Beetles, one must know something about music. How can one know and appreciate Rock and Roll with out understanding the contributions of Mozart and Beethoven. What about early religious music, gospel, Celtic ballads, blue grass, jazz and blues. All of this adds to the pool of knowledge which helps to lift one out of the deep dark swamp that many of today’s listeners are wallowing in. Come to the light and you shall see the truth. The Beetles are immortal; their music will stand the test of time because it possess harmony and speaks to the soul. My advice to you, you little mush head, is to become disengaged from you ipod and dig out some of your old man’s LP’s and sit back and listen to what real music is all about before it is to late. Like so many of your contemporaries, you might fine yourself lost and destined to be nothing more then a head bopping, mush head. Stop and change you life or you will worthless. The sad thing is that if you continue to go down the road you are on, you may contaminate the gene pool and contribute to the decline of humanity. Learn to Rock and ye shall find true happiness.
I never watch American Idol, I don't know anyone ,that came out of it,or care to, but I do love The Beatles.

Every band has a "weak link." In U2 it's Larry Mullen. In the Police it's Andy Summers. In the Rolling Stones, it's Charlie Watts. In the Beatles, it was always Ringo Starr. Just look at Ringo's solo career compared to his ex-bandmates. They've all been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while he still outside the gates. He even has to put together a group of ensemble musicians to tour. McCartney remains the highlight of his shows.
Ringo was simply a quick replacement for Pete Best whom early day fans really enjoyed.

Simon is a puke , and couldnt hold a candle to the greatness of Ringo , Ringo is a Beatle , Simon is a Roach

I will admit, Ringo Starr is not the best drummer ever. During his time with the Beatles, all he could play were accented 1&3 beats, the simplest beats known to man. He did keep a steady beat, though, and that's more than what can be said for some drummers today. He never went past the 1...3...1...3 and it has been said that for some of the more complicated rhythm songs, the Beatles used a different drummer for recording.
Simon was wrong to insult Ringo, but he is a know-nothing as far as MUSIC goes. He knows what the populous wants, but that's not necessarily good music. Example is Kelly Clarkson: Good voice, not good music. She's a meat puppet because she doesn't play the instrument or write most of the songs (for good reason.).

If you know anything about music, you would know that usually the bass guitar and drums are supposed to complement each other. Because Paul McCartney plays a melodious bass, Ringo's drumming is different than alot of other rock and roll drummers. Ringo even said that in the beginning he had to adjust to Paul's bass playing because it was so different than the bass players Ringo played with before.
