To Oprah, Whitney Recounts Drug-Filled Months Spent in Pajamas

Before Oprah Winfrey sat down with Whitney Houston for her first post-"crack is whack" interview, airing Monday, the talk host wanted to make sure the resurgent singer was up to the task. Her response? She wanted to "tell the truth" about her troubles, namely her high profile fall from R&B superstar to drug-using punchline.

Winfrey told Access Hollywood the interview "will leave you gasping," adding, "She does not blame her ex-husband Bobby Brown and she takes full responsibility for her engagement in drugs."

"At one point she says, 'I didn't get out of my pajamas for seven months'. She talks about doing the drugs and sitting in the house and the two of them going, 'What are we doing?'"

The intense interview comes as Houston enjoys strong record sales for her new album, 'I Look to You.' But despite her stature as a music industry titan, she apparently believed she needed to lower her standards to be with Brown.

"The thing most shocking to me is that Whitney tried to make herself smaller to fit in a marriage so the man could be bigger. How many women have done that? I deeply felt for her. She was trying to be the good wife. She really, truly loved him."

The 'I Will Always Love You' belter divorced Brown in 2007.

Winfrey has been promoting the Houston interview heavily in the past few days. Speaking with Diane Sawyer of 'Good Morning America' on Wednesday, Winfrey discovered Houston was "quite a different person" and "wanted to tell the truth."

"She gave it up," Winfrey told Sawyer. "She talked about difficulty in her marriage, how that started. She talked about the drugs, she talked about what drugs she was doing ... There wasn't a question I asked that she didn't answer."

Houston's last TV interview was in 2002, when she told Sawyer she makes "too much money to smoke crack. Crack is whack."

I have witnessed some GREATS tennin in my day and I have been so authentically excited to absorb the talents from stage during concerts. So, it is with a deep sense of loss and sadness that I make the following observations.
WHITNEY. What to say and pray about this leaves me a bit uneasy. Pull 'em up by the bootstraps and move out. Knock em dead my killer gal. if you forget anything, flub thru it and be spectacular. ALL THE BEST and get on WENDY WILLIAMS SHOW PLEASE.

I love Oprah, and know Houston has a megawatt voice; however, was I the only one who felt she spent more time blaming Bobby than owning up to her own part in the mess she made of her life and that of her daughter? No doubt the marriage aided in her downfall, but it was NOT the entire problem, it was her personal choices. I was stunned when she talked about finally leaving and the thing she wanted to convey to her daughter was the problems with her father "stepping out" on her, spitting on her" -REALLY? Cheating and Spitting while horrible are not even close to free baseing crack and mariwana FOR YEARS. Daddy had problems for sure, but it seemed to me that Whitney has still not taken responsibility for her own bad, out of control, drug addicted behaivor; i would like to have heard more of "yes he was bad for me, but i chose to stay and put my daughter through some pretty horrible things that I AM RESPONSIBLE for".

I'm not at all convinced this Houston has completed the work necessary to FULLY make her way from having CHOSEN to live a drug addicted and destructive life. I found the interview revealing, but I've seen Oprah ask some very tough, truthful questions with other guests and this just seemed like kid-glove time.

I wish Houston well, but the only way to do that is to stop blaming somene else and take personal responsibility.
