Lady Gaga's Performance Kills, Literally

In the first half ot the VMA's night of performances, Lady Gaga took over the stage just like she'd been promising. She began her performance lying in the middle of the floor of an aristocratic and extravagant set, surrounded by dancers scantily clad in white. Slowly, and almost operatically, Gaga launched into a powerful arrangement of 'Poker Face,' and transitioned into her hit, 'Paparazzi.' Watch after the jump.

Not unlike Madonna and her infamous 'Like a Virgin' VMA show from two and a half decades ago, Gaga sang, danced and passionately flung herself about the stage. Channeling her cabaret and theater background, Gaga effectively used the same 'death by love' concept from the 'Paparazzi' video in the performance.

Showing off real vocal skill and putting on quite the graphic spectacle, the act culminated in Gaga hanging from the ceiling and smeared in fake blood. Now that's theatrics.

Gaga's had been hyped up by blogger Perez Hilton, who had described her performance as "next-level." Gaga herself had said, " I can't wait to go to the awards show and hopefully kick some ass."

What happened to being tasteful at the same time to get a message across? I enjoyed the performance until that last moment. Just because someone didn't like it doesn't mean they don't get it.

I totally agree with you. I'd never seen her perform before. I'm not even familiar with her music. I mostly knew her from pictures in magazines. I was blown away by her performance. I really liked the theatrical aspect of it. I think she has a terrific voice. I don't know why every one is so upset over some stage blood. I found it quite dramatic and I enjoyed it.

okay do you not see her on the stage dancing and singing live nd playing piano how can you tell me shes not talentless when other singers wont sing live and dance at the same time. lady gaga maybe a little crazy but she sure is creative. she doesnt try to be "in style" thats whats fun about her. she also doesnt seem to give a crap about her nose unlike other celebrities who would have gotten a nose job. there is nothing wrong with not having the perfect nose. this was an amazing performance

That was an impressive performance. I think she has one of the better voices in the pop music game today and what is most impressive is that she sounds almost the same live as she does on CD. She ran the spectrum on this performance, she sang, danced, played piano, and threw in some theatrics. Did you notice her facial expressions over the course of the song. She slowly became more and more insane. She told a story, something which I haven't seen done in a vma performance in a long time.

I may be wrong, but her performance had so much depth. I don't understand why everyone has to be such a hater she is clearly musicly, vocally, rythmicly, and artisticly talented. Does anyone see similarities between what Madonna said concerning Michael Jackson, paparazzi, and blood? There may be a lot more to this performance than just the obvious. Think art people! That is what Lady Gaga is constantly saying is her aim and motivation.

BRAVO!! What an unusual and awe inspiring performance! Amazingly provoking and eerily entertaining. Have never seen her perform before but can now see what the draw is! No, shes not beautiful (nice bod tho) but I think that helps give her license to go all out!

Lady Gaga isn't just a singer. She isn't just an artist. She isn't just an entertainer. She's all of those things and more. This performance was incredible. It just pains me that people don't understand it and feel the need to put her down.

Truthfully, I had never watched a Lady Gaga performance until last night, but I thought it was awesome! Great dancing, singing, theatrical and thought provoking. Way better than a lot of boring performances in the past. BRILLIANT!!

That was god awful! You can hear how she's off key and gasping for air. Plus who uses fake blood anymore? I don't see why this performance is shocking like Madonna's were. I don't see how she pushed the envelope at all.
