When Howie Day stopped by PopEater's New York office recently to preview his new album, we hit him with the hard question: Does he ever feel pressured to write another big hit like 2004's 'Collide'? "I think that can happen. Yeah, for sure," Day said. "But you don't sit down to write the hit. You do that and it won't happen. This is my job, so I think about that."
Maybe his latest single, 'Be There' -- co-written with Better Than Ezra's Kevin Griffin, who also collaborated with Day on 'Collide' -- will do the trick. Day, who released the record 'Sound the Alarm' earlier this month, treated the staff to an intimate, mic-less performance of the catchy track, as well as the "heart-wrenching ballad" 'No Longer What You Require,' his favorite tune from the album.

"I think I wrote 30 songs for this album, and that's down to 11," Day revealed. "I knew what I wanted the album to kind of flow like, and what I wanted it to feel like."
The singer-songwriter is now taking those songs to the road. Day is currently on tour with Colbie Caillat, but at the time of his visit, he had yet to even meet her.
"Hopefully we'll be friends at one point [on tour]," Day said with a laugh. "A lot of times, you know, the opening band and the headliner kind of don't get along, fighting over soundchecks and stuff." Here's to hoping for more live duets than unpleasant altercations.
