'American Idol' season six top 10 finisher Chris Sligh is doing fine. He has an album out and is making a living from his music. But he warns the new crop of top ten contestants from season eight that no one will care about them once the tour is over.
"You're not going to be successful. You're not going to be millionaires (with the exception of MAYBE Kris [Allen] and Adam [Lambert])," he writes on his blog.
"You are going to struggle. No one will care about you. Those fans who've been asking for your autograph all tour long - 98% of them don't give a flying poo about you once next season of Idol starts," he continues.
"They're not going to buy your album when you put it out 2 years late. Chances are you'll never feel the rush of playing in front 10,000 people who care about you again. Your star is waning and remarkably quickly," Sligh adds.
The singer spells out what he thinks pretty clearly. "In other words, your days of being a star are over. But that's all right - so are mine. And I'm one of the most successful for my season of 'Idol.' I'm not a star. Chances are I never again will be."
Sligh finished 10th in the sixth season, with Jordin Sparks taking home the crown that year.
Anyone considering a possible "career" in the music industry should read "Rock Star 101: A Rock Star's Guide To Survival And Success In The Music Business" by Mark Ferrari. It is a real, honest, eye-opening guide to the biz. It's not just about talent, originality and drive - there's a lot of luck, strategy and "chance" that will determine whether or not you make it in the biz, let alone become a start. Many of these AI kids think that making the Top 10 is an automatic star on the walk of fame... it's just the beginning, an opportunity and a chance to become something great.
Where is it written that Idol has the obligation to find work for the losers. Kelly Pickler, Jennifer Hudson, and for a while Eliot Yahmin did well for themselves. Idol will not let any loser with talent escape if they think they can make money on them.
Wow, Chris, maybe they should all just throw themselves in front of a truck. That's how much hope you're giving them. Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Kellie Pickler, and Bucky Covington didn't make the finale, and look at how well they're all doing. How about pointing them out to the "losers" instead of kicking them to the curb.
He is is way off.Idol gives the contestant a boost to a career they would not have otherwise.Plenty of exposure. What they do after, will determine their success. Many of them fail because they make bad records.
Ummm just a reality check here. Does anyone care about them when they are on idol? Never watched the show and cannot for the life of me imagine why others would waste their time either. Get off the couch do something productive.
Poor Clay can sure side with you on that, think before you agree to anymore interviews, and get a agent or manager. You claim you came from outside Nashville, did you ever read the artists handbook?
This guy is sooooooooooooo right in many ways. Now look at one american idol winner TAYLOR HICKS. He won it all on the show but in real life he flopped. Then you look at some losers like Daughtry he lost but made it big on his own right with his music and still going strong. Ya have to put out alot of effort in proving to the world that your number one. You can't just rely on people voting for you on TV. If your good at what you do sooner or later you'll shine. Elvis was concidered way too crude to most in the early fifties. But ya know what he proved to everyone he is the king of rock n roll......... ahuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Sometimes even the winners dont make it. Taylor Hicks cant sell records..He is a wonderful entertainer and musician but not right for the current market. Kris Allen will sell for a while and then merge into the sea of all the others with non-descript singing ability. Adam Lambert didn't win but will go on to be a huge star (especially if he doesn't wait too long to record or do his own tour), Daughtry didn't win but has been enormously successful. Many have found their own niche in some form of entertainment.
I'm sorry did Chris Daughtry win Idol? Oh nope he was one of the LOSERS and he has sold millions of albums and millions of fans. Chris Sligh is a fat loser with nothing better to do. Get a life man.
I don't think he was whining. He was just stating the facts, and giving a warning to others to be prepared for the change in their life. He never said in the blog that he deserved anything more, or complained that AI didn't continue to support him. I think this, like many other articles, comes off very different than the writer meant it because it was taken out of context. I don't think he was whining at all. As I recall, he was a very down-to-earth type guy.
What a loser! It wasn't that Chris Sligh didn't win, and it wasn't that he put his album out 2 years late. It's that he never should have been on the show with his "barely so-so" singing, and his album was pure garbage from beginning to end. I love that he blames everything except his own lack of star power, staying power, and creativity. Many of the other "Idol Losers" are doing just fine. If Chris Sligh isn't- maybe it's him, and not the rest of the world. Own up to your own failure, loser!

Isn't the show about "winning" American Idol? They don't guarantee success. It is what you make of it.

That is true...BECAUSE you lost!! It's a contest - the winner takes ALL.
