I'm sorry, but living where she lives, coyotes are a risk. I can't believe she wasn't aware of this. If she didn't take the proper precautions to keep her dog safe then that's on her. Coyotes aren't monsters, but they are wild animals who will eat what they can catch. I grew up in coyote country and I know the risks. I've lost cats to them because you can't contain a cat, but dogs can be protected. If her dog wasn't, whose fault is that? Not the coyotes for simply doing what coyotes do. I just hope this doesn't lead to a backlash on them. Maybe this should be a lesson that stupid people shouldn't own pets.

YOur rationalization about your inept cat keeping is pathetic. Of course you can keep a cat in the house, if you have the responsibility to keep the litter box clean, and watch the cat as you leave the house. You are no different than Jessica regarding being an irresponsible pet owner.

You can contain cats...it's called keeping them indoors.

When you live in the country, your cats serve a purpose...it's called rodent control. They aren't "pets" as much as they are cohabitants of the same living space. I realize people want to heap loads of sympathy on this woman who set her dog down in a coyote prone area, then suffered the consequences, but it's BS. If she didn't want her dog taken and eaten, she should have stuck to the dog park or, here's an idea...AN ENCLOSED BACKYARD. You live in the Malibu Hills and keep coyote bait as a pet, then fork over the dollars to build a secure enclosure to protect your pet. The fault for this one is ENTIRELY on her. Most of us who live where the coyotes do accept the risks and don't have a mental breakdown when we lose the odds. Get a grip people. She chose to live there, take the risks, and feed her "best friend" to the coyotes. Forgive me if I don't weep over her selfish stupidity.

I agree with you Tara... People need to protect their pets when they are out of doors if they don't want them to get hit by cars/snatched by coyotes (who are just doing what comes natural to them) and other dangers of this sort... I'm sure that Ms. Simpson was just unaware of how easily this could happen, she's a lot like I was when I was young, very naive. Coyotes have a very hard life like it is with all the habitat encroachment, as do mountain lions and bears, and they do what they have to do to survive. The better we understand this the better for all of them.

I have cats and I live in the country, but my cats do NOT go outside. I do not use my cats for RODENT control. You obviously have never lost a pet that you were very close to because you would NOT call her stupid or ignorant. She didn't "feed" her best friend to the coyotes you idiot. You are a very insensitive person for lashing out at her. Granted she's not my most favorite person in the world, but sheesh give the girl a break.

She was standing there as the coyote attacked her dog. It isn't like no one was around. It's true that coyote's aren't monsters, but do attack, why blame Jessica and call her stupid. It was a horrible, horrible accident. She loved her dog. She wouldn't do anything to purposely put her dog in harms way. Things happen! I've raised dogs my whole entire life, and am quite knowledgeable in proper care, but I've still lost dogs to unfortuante accidents. Think before you speak!

"I've lost cats to them because you can't contain a cat,"
Why not? Is it that hard to take the extra 3 seconds to look around as you leave a house and make sure they don't get out?
My family hasn't had an outside cat in over 20 years. But than we actually care about them.

Stupid!!!????!!! Are you really so insensative or really THAT STUPID!!! It sounds to me there may be a little jealousy involved! Grow up...the girl just lost her friend!!! It wasn't just a pet to her!!! Get a life!!!

If she or anyone for that matter, is out taking their dog for a walk (like any reponsible dog owner), how is she supposed to protect that dog from a coyote?! A leash is'nt going to stop a coyote. You cant go out carrying a gun while walking your dog. Thats a rediculous statement, saying that it was her own fault.

I recently lost my dog and IT WAS in an enclosed backyard. I recently increased the height and design of the block wall so hopefully no more attacks. We even have coyotes try (or do) take dogs that are on leashes being walked. I am working to make our community more aware of what to do and ways to treat the coyotes so they are more fearful of humans. I feel bad for Jess because I miss my "baby".
