John Travolta described Wednesday how he desperately tried to save the life of his seizure-prone son and made perhaps his first public description of the teen as autistic as he testified in the trial of two people accused of trying to blackmail him.
With his wife, Kelly Preston, looking on inside the Nassau, Bahamas courtroom, Travolta said that he performed CPR on his son after a nanny alerted him the teen had fallen ill at a family vacation home on Grand Bahama island. Jett Travolta later died from a seizure.
"I ran downstairs with my wife to help my son," Travolta said.
Travolta also said -- apparently for the first time in public -- that 16-year-old Jett was autistic, confirming speculation that had swirled for years. The developmental disorder is frequently accompanied by seizures.

"He was autistic. He suffered from a seizure disorder," Travolta told the jury when asked about his son's condition. It had been widely believed that Jett was autistic, however the Travoltas had been cautious to never speak publicly about it.
Travolta is the star witness at the trial of two people -- paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamian Sen. Pleasant Bridgewater -- who are accused of trying to extort $25 million from the movie star. Both defendants pleaded innocent to extortion charges at the trial that began Monday in this island chain off the Florida coast.
Travolta testified that he and Preston were awakened by a nanny around 10:15 a.m. on Jan. 2, the day of Jett's death. Travolta said when he went downstairs, another caretaker was doing chest compressions and he began administering breathing help.
The actor said Jett suffered seizures every five to 10 days. He said the seizures would last 45 seconds to a minute and Jett typically slept for 12 hours after each one.
The judge dismissed Travolta on Wednesday afternoon but said he would be called back later for further testimony.
Travolta, 55, has kept a low profile since Jett's death. He skipped promotional events this summer for his latest film, "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3." He thanked his co-stars on his Web site for giving him time to grieve.
Travolta arrived at the Supreme Court building in an entourage of sport utility vehicles for his first appearance at the trial. Security was noticeably heavier than previous days, with Bahamian police officers surrounding the courthouse.
A friend of the actor's told PEOPLE that Travolta, 55, "had to dig deep" in order to return to the place of his son's death. "Going back was hard for him," says the friend. "The memories were too painful."
Kelly Preston, seen here with her late son Jett and daughter Ella, was set to speak in October about dealing with the loss of her 16-year-old boy, but pulled out of the engagement.

John Travolta's attorneys Michael Ossi, left, and Michael McDermott talk to reporters at West End, in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas, Saturday, Jan 3, 2009. Of the tragedy, Ossi spoke of Travolta's heartbreak. "He never dreamed of this – their relationship was so close. He always said 'I'm happy as long as my kids are happy.' He is heartbroken ... To bury your son is the worst thing you can ever do."

The 16-year-old's death has affected many. Speaking of Travolta's relationship with his son, Bahamian parliament member Obie Wilchcombe told Larry King, "He always brought him along. There was a close affectionate relationship and lots of love. People in the old Bahama community today are in shock."

Police say the alleged scheme involved a document related to Jett's treatment. It would have released emergency responders from liability if the family refused an ambulance but police said the document did not come into play.
After waiting half an hour for the ambulance to arrive, Travolta testified, he signed the release because he initially wanted his son taken to the airport for a flight to Florida instead of a local hospital.
He did not address why Jett was ultimately taken to a hospital. But an employee of the resort community where the Travoltas have their Bahamas home, Nathan Moody, testified earlier that he looked into using two private planes to fly Jett out but neither was an option on such short notice.
A nine-person jury was expected to hear from a total of 14 witnesses.
Maybe it is their business... Maybe they have good reasons for their choices, and maybe we have no right to get in their face -- anymore than we would like random people getting into ours?
Their son's disability is no one's business. Obviously it was required testimony. The strength it must have taken to go back there and pursue justice for their family is the real story here.
John Travolta and Kelly Preston always claimed their son had Kawasaki Syndrome. I have a son with Autism and I could spot the Autism in Jett Travolta immediately after watching him on TV one day a few years ago. Scientology doesn't recognize mental disorders and many in the medical community still believe Autism to be a mental disorder. To admit their son had Autism would go against Scientology beliefs. It's sad that John and Kelly could not only have helped their son by admitting he was Autistic, but also used their celebrity status to help bring about more Autism research, etc, like Holly Robinson Peete, Dan Marino and Jenny McCarthy have. Who knows, maybe now John and Kelly will. The question is, now that they have admitted that Jett had Autism, what will the Scientology higher-ups have to say?
Kwasaki disease is what caused his symptoms it is common for people with autism. This is a horrible tragic subject. I had a friend who also died at the age of 14 from this disease there is no cure on meds that dont really help. no matter what his religion his son would have died before the age of 18. to blame any religious belief for someones untimely death is wrong. God doesnt punis people for their belief read the bible people...
Maybe the Travolta's never wanted to say their son had autism while he was alive..because there would be some idiots out there blasing that all over the world...for their son to see, hear about and be made fun of. LOOK at the pictures. this man loved his son..and i can't see any way in hell he would have ever denied his son any kind of treatment which may have helped him..no matter what religion he is. I couldn't see him choosing any religious belief over his children.
They had claimed he had Kawasaki disease. I'm not sure how long ago and the details but Kawaski isnt fatal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_disease i still feel really bad for the family. i like to think that i can relate to them because my 18 year old brother is autistic and the family has been through quite a journey but this is a loss of a child and John's only son
Some people do not understand true LOVE. It does not matter what is wrong with a person as long as they are good people. GOD is the only soul that can judge people. All the negitave comments here will not go unpunished by GOD. He is your last hope. John loved his son and will miss him unconditionaly.
What difference could it possibly make that Jett was autistic or had some other problem. It is actually no ones business and I think the Travolta's should be left alone by all to get through this however they can. I feel for them, as I would anyone losing a child. I'm a firm believer that people should not out live their children. I hope I don't...
I really don't care what you people think so don't bother to respond. I gave my opinion and that is all I care about. All of you responders need to get a life, and like I said before, really take this stuff too seriously. GET A LIFE!!!!! I don't care if you reply...I REALLY DON"T CARE WHAT YOU THINK OR WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT I SAID...next time you see your psychologists or psychiatrist, tell them about it I DONT" CARE!!!!!!!!
personally i think it takes real sick people to exploit someone elses tradjedy to get money.may justice prevail.god has a plan in everything and its not for us to question him.i am a 52 yr old grandmother of 12 and i have an autistic grandson and i feel for mr travolta and his loss of his son.the love of a child and a parent goes beyond measure.leave the man alone and let him have some time and peace to grieve for his son.
My heart goes out to them. By all accounts these are truly very kind people who adore their family. I don't know how anyone finds the strength to move on after the loss of a child.
So the truth finally comes out. It wasn't Kawaski Syndrome afterall, it was AUTISM. What a bunch of liars. My niece had kawaski syndrome and it is no worse than chicken pox and once you had it there are no lingering side effects. They probably tried to use that wacky cult scientology to cure their son instead of medical care. They are the ones responsible for his death.
What kind of idiot are you???? Where is the law that says anyone HAS to discuss their or any members of their families medical conditions in public??? YOU and 99.9 % of the idiots who blame the Travoltas for wanting their privacy in dealing with Jetts' health issues have no idea of what thye tried or didn't try, if he was on seizures meds or not, or a special diet for his seizures, you just want to sit back and run your mouths about something you know nothing about. No one except the parent of a child with special needs would understand what it's like to raise a child with special needs. You don't do anything without first considering your child, if he/she will have the proper care, will anything happen that will upset them, will there be too much noise, anywhere to handle any special needs they may have while your at a certain place, etc., etc. They are the first thing you think of in the morning, especially when they have a seizure disorder b/c you are always waiting on the next break through seizure, and the last thing you think of at night, worried they will have a seizure in the night and no one will hear or know it is happening. Anyone could tell that Jett was loved by both his parents, and they have as much right to raise their kids as they want and any of us do. It was totally obvious that John worshipped Jett and that Kelly loved him dearly. I wish all you idiots would shut up!!!
I completely agree with you WVMOMMEE. I do wish, however, that they didn't choose to call his autism by another (very different) condition. If they are going to be private, then by all means and no one has the right to question them, as they were loving and adoring parents to him. If they choose not to handle his condition traditionally because of their religion then they suffer with that every day and none of us are to judge that.
I think we need a whole lot more facts before we blame the Parents. Facts that are actualy none of our business. If they were doing everything that they could do for their child, so be it. If they were using the Scientoligy BS, then yes the blame also falls on them. We don't know the facts though. 2 low lifes trying to extort money out of their grief is reprehensible though.
Unfortunately, there is no "drug therapy" or any other condoned treatment for "autism" because the term merely describes a set of outward behavioral symptoms due to cellular or molecular damage to the brain at birth or at a very young age. The cause of that brain damage is unknown so far, though it's well acknowledged that it would take an environmental trigger to cause these types of symptoms in a person possibly already possessing a susceptible immune system. Without the outside trigger, autism wouldn't result in that child. At least that's what some experts claim. The result? Well... Welcome to the world of autism, the worst exile any family can imagine. I admire the Travoltas for trying to protect the privacy and dignity of their son and their family. Autism is the ONLY diagnosis I know where EVERYONE around the patient must change their attitudes, behaviors, actions, habits, sleep, diet, etc. EXCEPT the person with the diagnosis. The person with autism changes when all elements in their environment are conducive to helping them learn, grow and change at their rate, within their limits, and in those things meaningful to them. It's an excess of hyperfocused attention, not an attention deficit. Most people don't have a clue about what all this means. That's why the Travoltas have been so protective of their privacy... because it's the ignorance of others that ALWAYS endangers the lives of families with autism. They endure their pain usually alone, in exile from true community, and tragically. Yes, there is love, joy and wonderful family times, but at any given moment that can always turn upside down or bottom out in a split second. That's what it's like living in the world of autism.
There is no way this relative had the same disease. Some doctor really made a mistake with your relative. There is no cure and it causes fevers and siesures from the high fevers some doctor you must have look it up on google. you have been really misinformed. some children have mild cases but if you have it it doesnt go away.
Please look up Kawasaki diease again because its nothing like having the chicken pox... hence it is called Kawasaki DISEASE. And who cares if their son was autistic, its their business... Not every celebrity has to make their private life public information.
