Goldberg Rips Somers for Swayze Quotes

Whoopi Goldberg put Suzanne Somers' comments regarding the death of actor Patrick Swayze in her crosshairs on 'The View' on Wednesday, lashing out at the actress for recent comments in which she hinted that chemotherapy and not cancer is what killed the 'Dirty Dancing' star. Somers took to her blog to defend herself, saying she had no idea she was speaking to a reporter at the time, and that having gone through cancer herself, she'd never say anything hurtful toward Swayze or his family. Somers was recently quoted as saying doctors "took this beautiful man and they basically put poison in him. Why couldn't they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins in his body?" She has since on her Web site for the comment, saying that she "was not informed or aware" that she was being interviewed "with someone who never identified himself as a reporter." She continued, saying she would have "never have been so insensitive as to offer a public statement so close to his untimely passing."

Despite Somers' apology, Goldberg said on 'The View: "In case she doesn't know, Patrick did everything and went everywhere to try and stay healthy as long as he could. That he's been gone a week and this statement came out is bad timing and bad taste and Suzanne, you know better."

Goldberg, who starred alongside Swayze in the hit film 'Ghost,' went on to say that she's "not sure that's not what you meant to do, but you should have thought about it," referring to Somers and the comment.

In her blog post, Somers says that "having had cancer myself, I know firsthand the pain and suffering heaped on patient and family ... In Toronto, I was thinking out loud and wishing for a different outcome for this beautiful man and his devoted wife. Patrick and his family fought courageously and with integrity right to the end. I know that every choice made in this devastating situation was made with love and care."

Swayze died on September 14 after a nearly 2 year battle with pancreatic cancer. He left behind his wife of 34 years, Lisa Niemi, with whom he shared his greatest and saddest moments. Flip through the gallery for classic photos and quotes from the couple >>

I agree. The key is prevenative. If we can find that key,we would not need a cure. In the meantime,if there is a way to cheat death,do it anyway you can. Ms. Goldberg should stop being so quick to take offense.

Until I see people with miracle natural cures start donating the proceed of their infomercials and books to charity I will not believe they are any better than the "private companies only in it for the money." They are all in it for the money!!

It was not insensitive to say what she said. It is insensitive for WG to make a big deal out of it at this time when the family is grieving. She should have just let it go and addressed it with SS personally instead of making it this big blown up thing. That is what a friend would do. She exploited the situation so she could be in the spotlight as the hero. She is no hero. If it was my family member just died I would not want a friend of mine making a big deal out of a small comment that they did not like. It is an emotional time and it was NOT the right time.

Maybe in his case it was too late for A.M. but for sure the chemo,helped destroy the rest of his organs
I sat next to a pharmacist in a flight and after a very heated discussion he admitted that even if you take an Advil it does some damage to your internal organs.I have nothing against Miss Woldberg but I agree with some people that she is the one who should think before she attacks some one else.

Whoopi use to have her assistant call up the water-park I worked at to get comp tickets for her daughter. Whoopi would never make a appearance or write a personal thank you. I would have seen the letters, sence I O.K.d the passes. Normally her daughter never showed up alone. So more free passes. NO respect for Whoopi. She needs to go.

Everybody is hurting. Things said may be taken out of context. I try not to even say much when someone passes because I always seem to put my foot in my mouth. It's obvious they both thought very highly of the man. What a great loss for all.

Suzanne may have had great success with her cancer but pancreatic cancer is a whole different ballgame! My brother passed away from it and he had no chemotherapy. His son believes in holistic healing and tried everything. So Suzzanne don't speak on something you know nothing about! The pancreatic cancer killed Patrick like it does thousands of people every year!

my dad had pancreatic cancer in the last stages.he was given no such chance of survival but 1 year at the most He had absolutely no chemotherapy and started using natural medicine. well that happened 6 years ago and he is alive and well. He takes garlic onions and herbs and multi vitamins which you still have to continue to live.he had lots of prayer and prays daily . Its funny he is playing golf and enjoying life with no more symptoms.In any type of cancer it depends on how much damage has been already been done to the cells and it does depend on what you eat. if you eat sugar then that feeds on cancer. he starts exercise and walking liftingweights.At 75 looks fantastic. chemotherapy can kill you, suzanne somers is correct. I have seen it many many times and i am a doctor.chemo is not the only answer out their.God answers prayer many times.

Whoopi is just about the best thing to happen to the View. She is the voice of reason, and I almost always agree with her. Suzanne Somers'
comments were insensitive, not just to Patrick Swayze's family, but to anyone who may have decided on chemo and radiation for treatment of their cancer.

My sister had to have chemo, radiation, and a mastectomy for her breast cancer at the age of 39. That was six years ago. We are very thankful for the chemo.
