Too many occurrences of child abuse and incest are ket quiet. Everyone thinks it just happens to poverty stricken minorities or immigrants with little knowledge of the English language. Incest, in particular is a crime that invloves years of "grooming" the victim and their supposed protectors (mothers?) through 1)a strong interest in the child's so-called well being, as if they alone can mentor this child and bing out their special potential or 2)through violent acts intended to establish discipline (but really it establishes domination) or 3) all of the above. Incestuous intent is something that the perpetrator is willing to wait years for to reach his goal, it is like a long awaited reward, cuz they're so smart and deserving and because they are right all the time, ya know. NOT! They are selfish and self absobed deviant atrocities amongst mankind.

However, when God created Adam and Eve, the brothers and sisters of that time procreated to bring forth a nation of people. It was not incest as we know it today in Biblical times at the beginning of Creation.

You evidently have not looked beneath what you and others see on the surface of this issue. People are complex, and a strong child does not always make a strong woman. Haven't you read about the Duggard girl recently? Held captive for 18 years; parenting two children, one of whom is now a teenager, with her abductor? Many "captives" are just that..CAPTIVE. They have become immune to the notion of escape because their molestor has done many things to them and made them comliant. Compliance is a survival mode; but the word alone does not mean much to them, it's the emotion. Once comlpliant they believe they themselves have "agreed" to this. After years of wooing the victim with threats and possibly even telling them that no one would want them or believe them anymore after discovery the victim feels shamed into remaining a victim even when afforded opportunity for escape. Not only this, these victims are being touched in places that repsond automatically and there is no one around to tell an inexperienced individual that just because someone woke up "that spot" and it felt good does not mean they wanted it. They think they did and they feel dirtier and more worthless than ever. People like you are the reason they remain quiet. You nor anyone you know obviously has never been hurt or victimized in this way; otherwise you might not be so hateful toward victims. Selling a book? I'm sure she is not destitute. Attention whore? Maybe. Maybe she needs some attention, the world needs enlightening when it comes to situations like hers, so that people will stop hating and become more observant toward illicit intent in the ones we trust around our children and so that people will stop labelling the victim. Personally, Her story has helped me, my husband and my mother to understand more about the many years I spent as a victim before my knight in shining armour (Hubby) rode up on his strong and able steed (his whole self) and rescued me from a life of fear and degradation. That was 30 years, 4 children and 4 grandchildren ago. I still become more enlightened and more imprtantly, stronger when I hear that there are other survivors out there who let the secret out instead of holding it in, as poet Langston Hughes would say, like a dream deferred, only to dry up like a raisin in the sun, or perhaps to stik like rotten meat.

I find it interesting that you, like most people, like to blame the victim. The truth should set her free....maybe even help her stop "self medicating" with drugs.

ya know, it is a very troubling thing that people think that this is dirty laundry, All over this world this goes on and for people to stick their heads in the sand and deny that it has happened in their family is why it continues to happen. Incest, child rape, molestation has no preferances to social backround, race, status or anything else, its a sickness that needs to stop, i personally feel that anyone who subjects a child to this should have their genitalia fried. This isn't dirty laundry, this is a definate social issue that needs to be addressed much more than it is.

McKenzie Phillips represents the very definition of a has-been. Why is this news and more importantly, why do people care?

Has-been refers to her career. Her life, however, speaks volumes in terms of helping to give other stricken victims a voice. That is why it is news to me. That is why I care....
Victims are people too.
