Mackenzie Phillips' Son Lends Support

Though Mackenzie Phillips has claimed that she had a decade-long sexual affair with her father, her relationship with her own son Shane is uncomplicated and loving. The former 'One Day at a Time' child star appeared on 'Today' to discuss the affect her shocking allegations have had on the Phillips family, and told Meredith Vieira, "I sat down with him about a month ago, and I said you need to prepare. As a family we need to prepare for some of the hard truths that are going to come out of this book. I sat down and took him through it and he looked at me and put his head on my shoulder and said, 'Poor mama. You better tell dad!' He's an amazing kid and nothing but supportive of me."

Phillips added, "I love my sisters, I love my brothers, I love Michelle. I wish that I had all of their support but I don't and that's alright, I understand. This is very difficult, and to be revealed on a public level just like this is very difficult and my heart goes out to them. God willing, as a family we will be stronger when this all dies down."

The actress, who wrote a memoir detailing her experiences with drugs and her troubled relationship with The Mamas and the Papas singer John Phillips, said, "I love my family, I've gone out of my way to tell my story in 'High On Arrival.' And our experiences with our dad were very different, thank God."

Actress Mackenzie Phillips dropped the father of all bombshells - she admits to a long-term sexual affair with her own dad, Mamas and the Papas singer John Phillips, who died in 2001.

Phillips' family is divided in their reactions to the memoir. Half-sister Chynna Phillips learned of the affair before the book was published, and maintains her confidence in Mackenzie's story. "I knew it was true," she told Usmagazine. "I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?"

Two of Mackenzie's stepmother disagree - both Genevieve Waite Phillips and Michelle Phillips condemn the allegations as pure fiction.

"I have every reason to believe it's untrue," Michelle told the Hollywood Reporter. "Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She's had a needle stuck up her arm for 'Rehab' and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed."

Mackenzie addressed this outlook in her 'Today' interview, saying, "I understand the detractors. I understand the people who are disgusted. I understand the people who don't want to look - it's not an easy thing to look at. It's very hard, and I meet their judgment. I meet their distance, I meet their disbelief with nothing but love and hopefully the ability to be of service to other people."

"I wrote this book for me," she explained. "I need to be free."

Nobody is perfect and, few are as courageous as Mackenzie. Still a rather unsavoury story for still puritan America.

an oportunistic pig is a better description of her. Nothing like an endorsement from Oprah for a book filled with sensationalism to titilate the fools of this country that eat this drama and nonsense up. Guess she needs to replenish the bank account from all the years of being a drug abuser. The garbage that comes out of hollywood in the last twenty years is sickening

Does anyone remember the days of "repressed memories", in which women (yes, I only remember women reporting any such events) under hypnosis, gained access to memories, "submerged" in their subconscious, of molestation as children by adult male family members? I believe Ol' Mackenzie is accessing memories submerged in the chemically induced soup of her faculties, and confusing her father with whoever she had been banging over the years, perhaps from wishful thinking. Some chicks take "Daddy" issues to the extreme. Another thing: why do they keep refering to her as a star? She was a crap actress in a crap show.

It is a very sad & twisted story. But what I have a real problem with....Is the fact that "Sir Mick Jagger" actually looking at a 18 yr old girl & saying "I have been waiting to do this since you were ten". What man looks at a 10 yr old girl & thinks about having "SEX" with her oh but I better wait till she's at least 18. That is a sick man & if you have noticed, no comment from the man, no denial.
If this was not true, just the allegation alone, would make you respond asap & very loudly. But nothing, I wonder how his daughters are reacting to this revelation about Daddy.

Like who the hell cares about the Hollywood and television people. They are all screwballs and lead a sorded life. Every one screwing every one. Who the hell cares. They are the ones that most help get Obama elected other then the ignorant blacks that voted for him for no ther reason then he is black. So now we got Phillips saying her father screwed her, so what, they are all screwing each other. Man on Man, girl on girl, bi-sexual, heteral-sexual who the hell knows with that Hollywood group. Besides that who they hell cares other then the people that have no life then the television and the couch. All a bunch of sick people out there and really enjoying there perverse life style. You don't think for one minute that she didn't enjoy what was happening to her. I JUST BET !!!!!

Mackenzie, I hope for your sake, what you said is true in your book. Most people find it too incredible of you having incestuos relationships with your father, drugged up or not. Are you absolutely sure about this? Drugs does funny things with one's mind.

I still think this ia all about timing of her book coming out. Honestly if it were true ( which I think not) why would you want the WHOLE WORLD to know? Especially when YOU WERE NOT A VICTIM YOU WERE A CONSENTING ADULT 19?? THEN TO SAY IT CONTINUED FOR TEN YEARS? If and that is a really BIG IF is true you belong in a mental ward. Now that I read you have a son, yeah your really thinking of how this is going play out on him..great Mother....If this really did happen you would not be on Oprah's show and Today's show and on and on...and spare me the garbage of how she needs to get it off her chest, they have THERAPISTS for that. Only differance is she won't get all the money by telling her BS to a therapist, so lets wait till Dad's dead and then make a few million by BS the world. If this is true why make it public. What is the purpose except to try and sell the book. I can understand for yourself, but nobody else needs to or wants to hear this. It's an embarressment for your family. Some things should just remain private.

Maybe she HAS to do this to free herself from all the weight and maybe she'll FINALLY quit the drugs for good! I was sexually abused twice at 12 yrs. of age and I carried that sh*t around for 29 years before I told anyone. It damn near killed me. If it weren't for my wife, I'd be dead. The only way I could get passed this was to tell everyone I could. Unless you've walked in a persons shoes...you simply have NO IDEA.

Most of you will never understand abuse. It is in many forms. Her's was fuled by drugs and a dysfuntional family at a very tender age. She thought her life was supposed to be that way, that is was normal. I believe her. I am currently reading the book. She has been holding this all in side for years and it's no ones fault. Drug are powerful and can make people do things they normally do and when you are introduced to them so young it becomes your daily life. I can't believe all of you who judge. You should be ashamed of yourselves. You never know what could happen to you or your loved ones down the road. Until you find yourself in that situation you will never understand.

I agree. I read John Phillips book in the 90's. Can't remember the title but he understood he was an immoral man. He admits to adultery, beating his wife (Michelle), being a terible father. He had problems way before the drugs. It struck me in the book when he points out jealousy between his daughter and his current wife. I believe her. I think that if people do go back to this book, so will they.
