Mackenzie Phillips' Son Lends Support

Though Mackenzie Phillips has claimed that she had a decade-long sexual affair with her father, her relationship with her own son Shane is uncomplicated and loving. The former 'One Day at a Time' child star appeared on 'Today' to discuss the affect her shocking allegations have had on the Phillips family, and told Meredith Vieira, "I sat down with him about a month ago, and I said you need to prepare. As a family we need to prepare for some of the hard truths that are going to come out of this book. I sat down and took him through it and he looked at me and put his head on my shoulder and said, 'Poor mama. You better tell dad!' He's an amazing kid and nothing but supportive of me."

Phillips added, "I love my sisters, I love my brothers, I love Michelle. I wish that I had all of their support but I don't and that's alright, I understand. This is very difficult, and to be revealed on a public level just like this is very difficult and my heart goes out to them. God willing, as a family we will be stronger when this all dies down."

The actress, who wrote a memoir detailing her experiences with drugs and her troubled relationship with The Mamas and the Papas singer John Phillips, said, "I love my family, I've gone out of my way to tell my story in 'High On Arrival.' And our experiences with our dad were very different, thank God."

Actress Mackenzie Phillips dropped the father of all bombshells - she admits to a long-term sexual affair with her own dad, Mamas and the Papas singer John Phillips, who died in 2001.

Phillips' family is divided in their reactions to the memoir. Half-sister Chynna Phillips learned of the affair before the book was published, and maintains her confidence in Mackenzie's story. "I knew it was true," she told Usmagazine. "I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?"

Two of Mackenzie's stepmother disagree - both Genevieve Waite Phillips and Michelle Phillips condemn the allegations as pure fiction.

"I have every reason to believe it's untrue," Michelle told the Hollywood Reporter. "Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She's had a needle stuck up her arm for 'Rehab' and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed."

Mackenzie addressed this outlook in her 'Today' interview, saying, "I understand the detractors. I understand the people who are disgusted. I understand the people who don't want to look - it's not an easy thing to look at. It's very hard, and I meet their judgment. I meet their distance, I meet their disbelief with nothing but love and hopefully the ability to be of service to other people."

"I wrote this book for me," she explained. "I need to be free."

This type of thing happened back then quite alot and is just now coming out. To judge her without walking in her shoes isn't right. If you've never had it happen to you you are one of the lucky ones. You have to remember that this was an era of free love, drug abuse, and alcohol abuse. I totally believe that this did happen, there is no way that she could have made it up she describes the feelings that happen when you go thru this type of abuse. Being a adult that was sexually abused by a alcoholic-drug abuser father as a child / teen I can relate. I was able to deal with it when I was a teen and lucky enough that my mother believed me and my father did admit it and did get help. To say it is untrue is wrong. Is it because she came from money that you think she is lying? Well it happens to the rich and the poor alike, the rich just have the ability to cover it up better. Give her a break she only knew what she was taught by her parent.

I believe her. I was in her shoes. It devastaded my whole life. It seems she still in pain. I was able to heal from the whole thing after years and years of working with my issues. That her family does not believe it, that others are judging her, its amazingly painful. You must have gone through an experience like that to know how it feels. She probably waited for him to die because most of the time abusers deny the whole thing and the pain of this gets to be more intense. She probably waited for him to die because she was still dealing with this issues when he was still alive. She probably waited for him to die to tell about it in a way to "protect" him from the shame he was going to face. You can tell in her face and expression that she is still hearting... how can anyone judge her? I will buy this book. I believe what she is saying and you dont have to be a small child to be a sexual victim.

Clearly this woman would have no voice but for her acting stint alongside Valerie Bertinelli in a 80s sitcom.

I do not know if the abuse occurred and if it did, I sympathize with her. However, I question the timing and the notion that her deceased father cannot defend himself. If Chynna had a hint about her sister's relationship with her father, she made no mention about this over the past few decades. So, while I understand Mackenzie's reluctance to come forward, surely her siblings would have some inkling about their Dad's transgressions for the 10 years that this abuse occurred. Chynna said, "I knew it was true," she told Usmagazine. "I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?" KEYWORDS: 'WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND'.

Finally, I wish 'Today' was a little more discreet about who they catapult into the limelight because it is newsworthy regardless of the truth.

It would be tragic but hilarious if the proceeds of her book permit Mackenzie to relapse into the cocaine habit she has indulged in repeatedly for close to 3 decades.

You go Girl!!! Mackenzie , I am sure this was not an easy story for you to tell. You just keep on working on healing yourself and getting yourself well, at least you are trying to stop the madness and acknowledge what happen and move on.Sadly this is something that goes on and its time to focus and help these innocent children who get subjected to this by some people who are truly sick and need help or jail time.I also don't believe at 18 was the first time,It probably was going on much younger.It is a very tragic story but one that can end very well for Mackenzie.Wish you the best!!!

I really feel for her. This must have been incredibly hard to live with. I've done stuff in the past that still haunts me, I couldn't imagine living with something of this magnitude. I'm surprised the ones ready to condemn her based on his past of drug abuse and mental illness don't see that something like this could have been a factor in that. Hopefully the effects of letting go of this painful secret will have more positive effects than negative for her.

Sorry, but I don't think this is real. First of all, her father is not here to defend himself. I think she feels empty because her fame is gone and she just wants to be in the limelight of TV and everyone's attention. Drug problems, I feel for her on that issue. It is a sickness and I do give her a High 5 for going through it a trying to get off and cured. I also think that since her mind is screwed up from all those drugs, she is thinking that and it's not real. She might be thinking of that because she misses her father and she is thinking that actually happened and she feel he Loved her more than anyone. Maybe losing him has put her mind somewhere else. I also think since she wrote this ( which I still don't believe) is to help sell her book so she can make money because she has none. All have their own opinion, and this is mine !!
