Little Love for J-Love's New Shape Cover

Blogs and other media outlets have been noting that Hewitt's newly svelte cover body doesn't quite match slightly curvier shots of the actress playing tennis in a black bikini last month. "Now, she is by no means an overweight woman, but even so, this health and fitness magazine airbrushed her size 2 ass," notes The Evil Beet.

Hewitt is hardly the first star to fall prey to an overzealous, Photoshop-wielding art director. In August, another health and fitness magazine, Self, weathered a firestorm of criticism for its blatantly altered cover shot of singer Kelly Clarkson, 27, that was ironically accompanied by the coverline, "Stay true to you and everyone else will love you too!"Women's blog Jezebel.com probably summarized the outcry best, writing, "So even though Kelly Clarkson has said she's confident at any size and [editor Lucy] Danziger points out that Clarkson works out and is 'as fit as anyone else we have featured in Self,' the magazine's staffers decided having her instantly shed a few pounds would make her look even more confident and healthy. Oh-kay, then."
Self editor Lucy Danziger responded to the brouhaha on her blog, defending the magazine and the practice of manipulating cover shots. In a post titled, "Pictures That Please Us," Danziger writes, "Portraits like the one we take each month for the cover of SELF are not supposed to be unedited or a true-to-life snapshot... We allow the postproduction process to happen, where we mark up the photograph to correct any awkward wrinkles in the blouse, flyaway hair and other things that might detract from the beauty of the shot."
She goes on to add, "Did we alter her appearance? Only to make her look her personal best. Did we publish an act of fiction? No. Not unless you think all photos are that."
As savvy media consumers, we know that painful pimples and awkward cowlicks are almost always edited out of images, but is it naïve of us to expect that cover shots reasonably resemble the celebrity supposedly pictured? Hewitt's photo is not nearly as manipulated as Clarkson's but probably the most troubling aspect about both pictures is that they're on the front of health and fitness magazines. These aren't stylized fashion shots. These are magazines that tout ideals of health and wellness and self-acceptance. How can any publication in good faith encourage its readers to overlook their imperfections when every single imperfection has been removed from its models?
The bottom line is, it's probably not that big of a deal when a dimple of cellulite or an under eye shadow find their way to the digital graveyard, but in the case of Hewitt and Clarkson, we should care that cover models are an accurate representation of the ideals and headlines touted on magazine covers and in their pages. No matter what magazine editors tell us.

I dont think the people actually were attacking JLH, the comments seemed to be pro-Jennifer. I agree, she is very beautiful and I certainly would love to have her shape but if shape magazine has to photoshop a picture to put on their cover, I guess I can photoshop my way off their readers list.
What's the fuss? It's a different pose. Her hips are turned and her thighs are crossed, so of course they look smaller in the magazine. Funny that the mag used "Take an inch off your hips" to cover up her hips.
Admittedly her chest is perkier in the magazine, but it's likely a more supportive bra, not just Photoshop.

the only photo shop that was done is maybe with clearing her skin of imperfections, thats the same body, she is just standing different ways!

"The downfall of a democratic society occurs when that society holds beauty in higher regard than substance."
Or something like that.
I don't think 'real girls' bother the viewing public. I think 'real girls' bother magazine moguls. I also think there's a definite public trend toward women who look like women and most of us know the difference. JLH and Kelly may be less than perfect, but it's that lack of perfection we mere mortals appreciate and applaud. JHL has a long-lived career and Kelly has an incomparable voice - talents which magazine editors severely lack.
So let the poor misguided media continue to publish that which they think pulls the wool over the public eye. We know what we've seen, we know what we like and we're not nearly so stupid as the media believes.

SHE'S JUST A HOTTIE THAT'S PERFECT IN EVERY WAY......SO SWEET AND BEAUTIFUL.

She was beautiful last year, and she is beautiful now. Looks the same in both photos to me.

A push 'em up bra in the candid shot and her legs semi-crossed to cover the little extra on the hips and thighs, as in the cover, and there's practically no difference. Musta been a slow news day at ol' SlopEater....again.

Leave her alone, she is a very pretty young lady and she doesn't deserve people saying mean comments.

The only photoshopping I notice actually to the body is the thighs appear to be slimmer but maybe by a freakin millimeter. Why is this turning into a big deal? I could see if she was on the cover of shape all photoshopped if she really looked like she did when she gained all that weight then I would say photoshopping went too far. This is a woman who had a weight issue, started exercising and eating right and looks like she lost a few pounds and toned up. good for her. I think she looks great and think people should lay off her. most of the nasty comments come from obese ugly men or tween girls who haven't gone through puberty yet so they are thin as a rail with no butt and no boobs with braces and acne and they are just jealous.

Detractors obviously do not know the effects and results that photogrphers achieve with lighting not to mention "dodging and burning" and other printing choices available to a magazine publisher. On printing I might risk a 10% chance a photo lab did some work on it but its mostly lighting.

She is an absolutely gorgeous woman and people need to just get off her weight already!!! She was gorgeous before she lost weight, we put way too much stress on the fact that actresses should be skinny sticks!! These are real women and should be free to look like real women and stop worrying about all the stupid people criticizing their weight! I know many beautiful women, comfortable with their shape and none of them are a size 2 or even 6!!! I don't want my daughter growing up to think she is not perfect because she isn't a size 2, we are destroying young women's idea of what women have to look like! Leave the women alone for having curves!

shape doesn't photoshop and she looks the same in both pics. She's gorgeous!

JLH looks fine as is....but that mag cover is NOT her real look if the other ppic was only a month ago. Just look at her belly...her navel doesn't even look the same. Why the heck should she get involved with this nonsense in the first place?

What poeple don't seem to realize is that camera and lighting can do more to a person's figure than even photoshop. And I say kudos to a photographer for making the best of his model. I don't think this picture was photoshopped...just well taken. (although she may have done a couple stomach crunches before the photoshoot :P)

JLH is a talented sweetheart that (apparently) carries the "fat-butt" gene. Look at her old pics, then come up to date and you can see it happening before your eyes. Too bad--because she still seems to enjoy men and now might have to include a few black guys in her stable!

Photoshop is done in the studio, at home, who cares. We love to perfect our images at an advanced stage it is art. I see the lines for ribs did not need to go down to her waste, but like I said, who cares. Other than that it is the standard these days. It is fine, she is a pretty lady, curves are good, thin, not scary is fine. We are individuals, one size does not fit all. Watch my event you are going to hear about. Just remember 4DP, when you see it, it will click and you will say, oh yeah, I remember someone saying something about that.

Shes standing twisted sideways in the one pic and standing twisted always gives you a slimmer look it pulls your skin tighter!
