Little Love for J-Love's New Shape Cover

Blogs and other media outlets have been noting that Hewitt's newly svelte cover body doesn't quite match slightly curvier shots of the actress playing tennis in a black bikini last month. "Now, she is by no means an overweight woman, but even so, this health and fitness magazine airbrushed her size 2 ass," notes The Evil Beet.

Hewitt is hardly the first star to fall prey to an overzealous, Photoshop-wielding art director. In August, another health and fitness magazine, Self, weathered a firestorm of criticism for its blatantly altered cover shot of singer Kelly Clarkson, 27, that was ironically accompanied by the coverline, "Stay true to you and everyone else will love you too!"Women's blog Jezebel.com probably summarized the outcry best, writing, "So even though Kelly Clarkson has said she's confident at any size and [editor Lucy] Danziger points out that Clarkson works out and is 'as fit as anyone else we have featured in Self,' the magazine's staffers decided having her instantly shed a few pounds would make her look even more confident and healthy. Oh-kay, then."
Self editor Lucy Danziger responded to the brouhaha on her blog, defending the magazine and the practice of manipulating cover shots. In a post titled, "Pictures That Please Us," Danziger writes, "Portraits like the one we take each month for the cover of SELF are not supposed to be unedited or a true-to-life snapshot... We allow the postproduction process to happen, where we mark up the photograph to correct any awkward wrinkles in the blouse, flyaway hair and other things that might detract from the beauty of the shot."
She goes on to add, "Did we alter her appearance? Only to make her look her personal best. Did we publish an act of fiction? No. Not unless you think all photos are that."
As savvy media consumers, we know that painful pimples and awkward cowlicks are almost always edited out of images, but is it naïve of us to expect that cover shots reasonably resemble the celebrity supposedly pictured? Hewitt's photo is not nearly as manipulated as Clarkson's but probably the most troubling aspect about both pictures is that they're on the front of health and fitness magazines. These aren't stylized fashion shots. These are magazines that tout ideals of health and wellness and self-acceptance. How can any publication in good faith encourage its readers to overlook their imperfections when every single imperfection has been removed from its models?
The bottom line is, it's probably not that big of a deal when a dimple of cellulite or an under eye shadow find their way to the digital graveyard, but in the case of Hewitt and Clarkson, we should care that cover models are an accurate representation of the ideals and headlines touted on magazine covers and in their pages. No matter what magazine editors tell us.

All photos on every mag is photochopped. Geez, look at the more mature women they sometimes have on mags and they do not have a wrinkle on their face, or saggy neck? I don't think so, everyone gets older and needs to be proud. Everyone has a different body and needs to be healthy and care about their body but we do not have to be movie star thin. All it does on covers is sell mags. Wake up some morning next to one of these 'stars' and I am sure you would be surprised what they look like in real life. By the way, JLH has a good body without the photochopping.

first things first she is wearing two different styles of bathing suits one is designed like a push up thus making the breast appear larger!!! secondly she is standing in a different position on the cover shot making her hips and thighs look smaller!!! if u have ever been in a photo shoot you would know that the photogropher makes women stand or sit in a way that flatters that womans body
Reply
Leave the lady alone, you can totally tell these 2 suits are entirely different the black top has no underwire?? Hence the white top which does. Different colors as well as different fits make the body look a little different, she is not photoshopped.

it dosent matter she lloks like she beautiful and u know what the people who are critiziing her probably wish they looked as good as her and you know people need to lay of of jenn and kelly ok you should love them for them arent you critics a little old for playground teasing you go kely and jenn

JLH, I would marry the girl in either Picture or even the one from last year. Call me so we can set a date, then I would be smiling too.

If it was fifty pounds they had taken off her, then yea, I could understand everyone freaking out about it.
But they took, what, a POUND off her, maybe two?
Big deal.
The point of the photoshoot is to make her look her best. Who knows what she did prior to the photoshoot to get in shape, and who knows what the photographer and crew did during the photoshoot.
Whereas with the other photo they don't care if she looked her best or not. FYI, she's not exactly posing in that one.
More times than not every magazine cover will be 'touched-up' to make the cover model look better. Sometimes, yea, they'll take some weight off the model, but in Hewitt's case I highly doubt taking weight off her was necessary and the priority of the photoshopper and cover director.
'Oh my god! A celebrity who doesn't need photoshop to still look great!'
Get a grip people T.T

Gimme a break! In one photo she's relaxed and playing tennis. In the other she's posing as a model, everything sucked in, slightly twisted to one side. Same body, just not posed. I'm glad to see she's not all skin and bones. In clothes she looks way too skinny. (Speaking as the mom of 3 girls)

I don't think that she looks too bad. Yes, guaranteed it was photoshopped but everything is. There is better lighting, a better pose, and a more supportive top in the professional picture than in the candid one. She looks great in both either way!
Reply
She looked better before!! I mean she's a real girl not some starving preteen girl! Curves are pretty not unhealthy. People have just gotta realize that only 2% of people are even close to a size two. instead of hiding it EMBRACE! ^__^

I think Magazines should be allowed to air brush zits and things of that nature, but to air brush somebody to make them look thinner is just insane! It's because of crap like this little girls are starving themselves and forcing themselves to throw up after eating! Pink said it best with her song "Stupid Girls". What a joke. The celebs need to stop this crap from happening.

man, she is more bangin in the real pic than the cover! People are jus hatin...so what, she doesnt look like a sophomore in high school anymore...shes thicker..jus the way a real man likes em

Jennifer, you're adorable and perfect the way you are. You have a great attitude about your body and have a great sense of self. Bloggers get a life-are you kidding me with this debate???!!! If there is any difference is so slight that there shouldn't be a discussion. Get a real job-Bloggers!!!

Im sorry but everyone gets photo shopped. why, because no one is perfect! that is the problem with society, we look at these magazines and advertisements and think, "why cant i look like these beautiful people!". and we dont except ourselves. I gained new respect for Kim Kaardashian
when she did her photo shoot and decided not to be photo shopped! jennifer you look good no matter what!

I agree with Bobbb. People, all celebrities are photoshoped a little or a lot. It depends on what the needs are for the shoot. It's also about angles and lighting. Notice her hands/arms are covering her hips. She is slightly turned on the mag cover while the candid shot is of her full on front.
She is beautiful, small waist, hips and curvy, the way a woman is supposed to be. If anyone thinks celebrities look like they do on t.v. or magazines, please wake up. Why are people making this such a big deal? It's really not.

it looks exactly the same. people must be retarded if they cant see that.

We have so many overweight young ladies (and men) now, so maybe this will inspire some of those obese people to take off those unneeded pounds.

I am a big fan of Jennifer's and if she weighed 200 lbs I would still be a fan. I also love her beautiful voice. My favorite song is Sailor Moon. I found it on Lime Wire. Check it out it is a great song. She is a natural beauty, something that Hollywood knows nothing about.

She has a different bikini on. It is pushing up her breasts, and the bottom is making her hips look different. She looks great, leave it at that.
