Thanks to public outrage and a police visit, a prestigious art museum in London has decided to take down a nude photo of a 10-year-old Brooke Shields that critics and child advocates feared would be a "magnet for pedophiles."
The Richard Prince work titled 'Spiritual America,' was scheduled to play a role in the Tate's 'Pop Life' exhibit, but will no longer as law enforcement influenced the museum to take it down. A Tate spokesperson says it has been "temporarily closed down."
The image showed a young Shields naked from the knees up, wearing make-up and covered in oil.
'Spiritual America' is actually a 1983 photograph of a 1975 photograph taken by artist Gary Gross, who hired Shields as a model and claims he had her mother's consent. She tried unsuccessfully to buy back the negatives in 1981, before Prince incorporated it as his own. A judge ruled her as a "hapless victim of a contract."
Children's advocates reacted to the Tate's decision with shock. Michaele Elliott, founder of Kidscape, told the Telegraph he felt Shields was being exploited. "She could not have given informed consent to it being used," he explained. "It must be bordering on child pornography. It is certainly not art."
He continued, "If you are using a picture of a naked child to bring people to your exhibition, then you are exploiting that child. It's as if they are using a 10-year-old girl for bait. I find it disturbing and they should be ashamed of themselves. And putting the picture in a room with a warning outside really is a magnet for pedophiles."

Prince described Shields' appearance in the photograph as "a body with two different sexes, maybe more, and a head that looks like it's got a different birthday."
My daughter was in many national commercials from 8 years old until graduating from college. I saw many 'stage mothers' who depended upon their child's salaries (in spite of the 'Coogan Law'). If Molly had a soccer practise or school event, no interview. I also refused to allow her agent to book films or TV series...only commercials which took, at the most, two days from her normal life. Brooke's mother seems to be one of those 'stage mothers'.
If memory serves, her mom not only let her do it but greatly encouraged her to continue to do not only these photos but movies where her young daughter was portrayed as losing her virginity. No wonder our kids have no morals-their parents don't have any either. A nude photo of a 10 yr old is neither art nor "spiritual".
No, it's worse than that. The mother didn't let her do it. Brooke Shields was basically promoted as a sex toy, by her mother, ever since she was 4 years old, if not younger.
Almost her entire career was about sex and the confusion of a way too young, way too sexy girl being near some lonely older man. And, while many people objected to it, at the time there were no laws to prevent that sort of exploitation as her mother kept it just beyond what was actual, technical pornography.
If those pictures were taken today, and displayed as new art, someone would be going to jail for it! Or, at least, having their child taken away and those pictures would be destroyed.
The fact that Brooke Shields tried to buy them, so they could be destroyed says it all, really. The poor woman is a life long, very public, victim of her mother's avarice and the lust of various strangers.
The truly sad thing is that this is what made her famous. The risque pictures and acting parts that she did as a child gave her the notoriety to maintain a career as an adult, (perhaps with a little blackmail thrown in). She's not much of an actress, and there are certainly prettier women out there, but she started doing grown-up things as a child and got the attention that others didn't.
the sad thing is Aly is that her mom did do that and in about 25 years the same thing will be coming from Billy Ray about inapropriate pics of his precious Miley. People will never learn. When it comes to that almighty dollar fathers and mothers will sell their kid. THAT IS SAD
Oh for Gods Sake ... get over your sanctimonious self. For all the brouhaha she inspired, Brooke, is Famous because of her mother. By-the-way, her mother has the Disease Alzheimer's. And, the picture was taken in 1975. I'm sure her parents were present at the time or at least one of them. Her family certinaly didn't need the money. Her father, Frank Shields, was a Vice President executive for Revlon. Her mother, Teri, was a former model and an actress, herself. AND, her Her grandmother was the Italian Princess Donna Marina Torlonia. So, through her grandmother Brooke can claim descent from Henri IV, King of France, Lucrezia Borgia, and Honore I, Prince of Monaco, among others. Marina's brother, 5th Prince Alessandro (1911-1986) married the Infanta Beatriz of Spain (1909-2002), an aunt of King of Spain Juan Carlos de Borbón. Their granddaughter Sibilla Sandra Weiller (b. 12 Jun 1968), Brooke's second cousin, married in 1994 Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg (b. 1963), a younger brother of the reigning Grand Duke of Luxembourg. She was never poor ...
I totally agree... in fact as a child she probably had no choice but to do what her mother said. I think that is very sick and her mother should be charged with a crime.
He has seen so many people walk for worse things. He might be thinking he is as good as a politition and should be pardoned like them, for what they keep doing, promoting corruption. He might be right. After all he does have money. Doesn't money mean you are right?
What a worthless piece of nothing her mother is, to even consider letting this picture be taken. She needs to be arrested along with Gary Gross for child pornography.
As an old guy I have to say your ignorant. At the time that photo was taken it was a much more innocent thing. Many such art pictures were taken of children. Even I had one taken of me as a child in a bathtub, but the bubbles covered up parts. No one was obssessed or upset about it. This Child Pornography thing has made us all cold to artistic nudity. Brook Shields was also nude in some of her films, including "The Blue Lagoon", and if you watch that movie it is completely about childhood innocence. So to say this is disgusting porn, then the next time you see those naked Cherubs in the Cathedral, I want you to tell the priest that it is disgusting for him to exploit the children that posed for that painting. Or lets tear down the "Mannequin De Pis" in Brussels Belgium. I'm sure they would like that!
I'm sorry, but your statements are the ignorant ones. A child naked from the knees up covered in oil and wearing makeup - you consider THAT innocent??? It's child exploitation and child pornography, and the mother should be ashamed for allowing her daughter to be photographed in such a way, and the photographer should be ashamed for using it in the exhibit.

The sad thing is her mother let her do it. What parents will do to get their children famous to pay their bills is disgusting.

This is nasty. Only a freak of nature wants to look at a naked 10 year old girl!
Wrong...Her mother didn't LET her do it, she MADE her do it. Old lady Shields was the poster child for famous-child exploitation!

A 10 year old doesn't ask her mommy if she can pose nude. Her mom didn't let her...At that age, her creepy mom told her to do it.
