After John Travolta took the witness stand last week and testified that his late son Jett was autistic, people wondered if The Church of Scientology would soon lose one of its high-profile members. Until then, Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston said their son had Kawasaki disease, a rare condition that causes arterial inflammation because autism is not recognized in the church.
Because autism is often treated with the types of mood-stabilizing drugs that Scientology opposes, Jett is believed to have gone without appropriate treatment for years because of the church's teachings.
Back in July, the 55-year-old actor denied reports claiming he was abandoning Scientology following the death of his son Jett (via PEOPLE.) But now, he's keeping quiet and refuses to comment on his relationship with the church.
Tory Christman, an outspoken Scientology critic who left after more than 30 years in the organization told The Daily Beast that Travolta's admittance of Jett having autism was a sure sign he'd be leaving the church.
"My hope for him is that he starts looking" at what really happened, she said. "He'll reach the right decision... I just don't want him to be used by the church. It's horrible he lost his son but change something. He's a guy who could really make a difference."
Christman, who is epileptic, said the institution has little tolerance for chronic conditions and pushed her to stop her medication and use vitamins and supplements instead. The first time she cut back on her medications, she had a grand mal seizure in her bathroom and knocked out her front teeth. She says she resumed her medication but tried to stop again in the face of continued objections from the church-- and again faced disastrous results.
Tommy Davis, a spokesman for Scientology, denounced former Scientologists who are critical of the church as "liars," adding, "It's a horrific, horrific thing for these people to take the tragic death of a young boy and try to turn it on his parents' religion."
"This religion is utterly and completely about helping. It's just insane to think that Scientology would be a factor in somebody not getting all the help they need," Davis added.

Scientology is in no way, shape or form a religion. It is a tax evading scam.
They should get away from this occult as soon as they can because if thier son could have been treated for these siezures and wasn't they basically killed their son.
Reply
Scientology (sp) obviously kills people if they frown on medication.
Scientology is as legitimate a religion as any other. But then, I don't find any of them compelling in the least. I'm perfectly happy to simply exist without any explanation for it or anyone telling me how to live out my days.
webkitty: Mormons are Christian religion and completely against Scientology beliefs. They also have no beliefs in conflict with modern medicine. What are you, Southern Baptist?
Melanie, you are absolutely correct. I have always admired John Travolta despite his association with Scientology, and I will become an even more avid admirer if he does the right thing and abandon this charade.
luvncbeaches: Mormons are NOT part of the Christian religion. I'm sorry, but Mormonism is extremely different from Christianity. I know from experience because my father spent years studying it and comparing it to Christianity.
My antenna went up the minute I heard JT say his son had autism. I knew then the spell was broken. His son could have had a better quality of life had he been treated. Sadly, JT is probably thinking this as well but with death comes regret. On a different note... Epilepsy can kill if it's a bad seizure. Even on medication it doesn't always stop a seizure. Maybe it was his son's time to go. I don't believe JT killed his son. This is all part of his journey in life. My prayers and thoughts are with him.
Scientology is a hoax. I agree with your comment. All they want is money. I remember a little boy that died from multiple bee stings. The parents wouldn't take him to a hospital instead prayed over him. We were given talents for a reason. Doctors to perform life-saving procedures, actors to entertain, etc. Why would a church be against saving/helping their supposed congregation? I don't understand. All this crap about becoming "clear"? What the hell is that?
JMH is right. If your just putting along in life and have made no decision about your soul then any religion or god will do.And that is about as sad a thing I will ever hear,God says I will deny you if you deny me.That day is coming like it or not and it`s your decision remember just putting along in life.
I don't know much about Scientology but the few things I have heard make me ill. What Tom Cruise said about depressive illness etc. I wonder if anyone he knew had mental chronic illnesses? How in the world could anyone in their right mind not think that Autism or any genetic disease such as bipolar which has been studied for centurys not be real. What an ignorant bunch.
Scientologists are as WHACKED as Jehova's Witnesses!
Hubbard started Scientology as a JOKE!! Yet these ignorant people follow a JOKE!!!
Melanie: You want Travolta to get away from this cult and go with the group that talks to this invisible dude in the sky. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. As for being a scam, I think they all are and their freedom of taxation should come to a screeching halt.
Althought I believe as you do concerning this religion you make a really harsh and bold statement regarding the Travoltas. This family has been lured into a false religion that promotes non-intervention which is blatantly wrong. They will have to live with the repurcutions of that choice, but to make such a harsh statement to a family who is grieving over such a loss is not appropriate either.
JMH, Scientology is not a religion. L. Ron Hubbard pretty much made the entire thing up out of whole cloth. Although I do think their contention that humans descended from clams is amusing. Google "Poor little clams, snap snap snap" if you need some entertainment today.
Look Sesiure disorder in Autistic children or children with Adhd can be very difficult to find the right medication too.
Acording to the story John was most likely trying meds to control the seizures he said it wasn't working and they had stopped medicating the boy.
My friend son had a rear nerological issue and it took many years to find the right kind of combination of medication to stop his seizures and the progression of the disorder. He was orginally dx as adhd then emotionally disturbed because of what the seizures were doing to his brain fuctioning and it was to believed that the durg indonescene which was given to prevent prematurity and much lager doeses five years before I had taken the same drug caused this rear nerological degration of this child's brain. This mom was a nurse and yet it took years to find out and fix what had gone so terribly wrong by a miss use or poor monitering of the drug. My son has aspergers and adhd but does not have seizure disorder. The drug may still be causing a milder form as it may still have side effects. For doctor's the risk of a drug like indencene at 6months ( they thought I would have a cord prolapse and my child would not have been born or been born too premature to survive) It prevented premitureity in pregnacy out weighed the risks to the baby it's self. The doctors made that decision. It is a hard call. To have lost this indivdual who is a real cool kid now I know he is a mricial child. Yes, adhd and aspergers is maybe a result of a drug that might have had an impact on his development not sure. He has a younger brother who was not permature or at risk for permatureity who has adhd and aspergers but is effected more midly. Hard to say if it is a gentic disorder or if medications taken while pregnat ( also had an pain med and eiPdoral )
Even if He knew about Autism and seiures not sure if putting the best doctors on it would have found a way to help Jet. I BELIVE BLAMING THE PARENTS IS JUST SO HORRIFIC THEY ARE SUFFERING NOT HAVING jET IN THEIR LIVES.
yES THEY HAD THE MONEY TO HELP HIM, AS A PARENT i DON'T THINK YOU CAN LET YOUR CHILD SUFFER A SEIURE AND NOT WANT TO STOP THE SEIURES BUT TO SAY THAT ANY RELIGIOUS BELIVE GOT IN THE WAY OF THE KID GETTING THE RIGHT HELP i DOUBT IT.
i AM A CATHOLIC AND i DO NOT ALWAYS DO WHAT MY RELIGION DICTATES i SHOULD DO AND AS TO IF THERE WAS SOME ODD DECREE THAT STOPED ME FROM GETTING MY CHILD HELP BECAUSE IT WOULD BE AGANIST THE CHRUCH,
iN THE MIDDLE AGES THE FRIST HEALERS WERE aLCHEMISTIS AND THE PRATICE OF aLCAMICAY WAS SEEN AS BLASTIFY TO THE CHRUCH AND POPES OF THAT ERA. i AM SURE PARENTS WITH SICK CHILDREN WENT AGAINST THE cATHOLIC CHURCH TO HEAL THE CHILDREN IF THEY WERE ILL. nO RELIGION WOULD STAND IN A PARENTS WAY OF SAVING A CHILD'S LIFE. tHERE ARE THOSE WHO BELIVE PARYER IS ENOUGH TO HEAL BECAUSE OF jEAUS AND HIS MRICALES BUT OTHERS LOOK TO A COMBINATION OF PRYARER AND sCIENCE TO HEAL.
You are so right. Why would God give us these medications if not to use them to cure or help us?
scientolgy is nothing short of an accult and the members should wake up people they are another jonestown taking your money and telling you not to give medications to you or your children they are not by all means a religion they are an acult, which should be abolished like the aclu they are not what they are suppose to be they need to be abolished too or ran back to canada where they belong, this country is going to hell in a handbasket because of these groups
scientology is for losers
Are you serious that scientology is not a real religion becuase it kills people by banning medications. Does that mean that christianity is not a real relgion becuase the fanatics are encouraged to just pray for healing? Although I put no stock in religion and think that religion is nothing more than a socially acceptable cult, scientology puts the patrons at no greater risk than christianity. It is the christian rite telling the bush administration not to allow stem cell and aids research, and in those 8 years he was in office, Germany found a cure for AIDs but it was not publicized in the US to avoid criticism against the catholic/ christian church and their morals
