What is even more sad is the fact that for the women who really need the protective orders, getting one doesn't help much. The men who are abusive don't follow them and attack their wives worse for getting the order.

That is the biggest load of crap ever. As a victim of this so called "imagined abuse and terror inflicted by my ex" I can assure you that the majority of women are in fear. There is nothing fun about going to court and admitting that the man you slept with and gave your time and love to tried to kill you. I was a lucky one and escaped with only bruises and a loss of hearing in my right ear.Many women are not as fortunate, domestic violence is real pal and the statistics will validate that fact.
The majority of women murdered are killed by their significant other or "loving" husband. Ignorant people like you perpetuate this violence against women.

Right. Who's paying off these judges? women with black eyes, covered in bruises and broken bones? Less than 1% of battered women complaints have been proven false. LESS than 1%. I advise all women to keep a record of every abusive deed and word. It was what affected the judge's decision the most in my case. He took one look at the list, told my ex his actions spoke louder than his words and granted me a permanent restraining order. Then he asked if I wanted to go home. Most judges are fair and compassionate and want to fix the world. And they don't give a thought to the whiny complaints of probable wife beaters like you. Your worthless ranting only makes you look guilty.

This is really a reply to Julia Evans. You said "less than 1% of the allegations are PROVEN false". Come on Julia. Do you have a source for that. I doubt it. How do you "prove" a he said she said allegation. I am sure the number of TRO's that are issued are the result of actual abuse or threats of abuse; but 99%?? Come on. Please don't join in an intelligent discussion by throwing in ridiculous statistics. Without being able to quote a statistic, I'll bet you a large number of so-called accusations are the result of the lawyers grandstanding for the courts and trying to pad their fees in the divorce. Its a shame in this country that divorce is so confrontational.

Seth, you haven't noticed the reports of men killing their estranged wives and children? Each request for a restraining order has to be taken seriously.

I agree that the courts tend to lean toward the mother in most custody cases but there's a reason, traditionally the mother is the primary caregiver. Hopefully as more dads take over the cargiving role, changing diapers, feeding, giving baths, helping with homework etc, the courts will change too.
Have you ever tried to get a restraining order? I can only speak from the two times I was involved in a court case to get one but it wasn't all that easy. Unless you have threatening emails or texts, video tape of violent behavior, a bus full of witnesses to attacks and police reports describing violent outbursts you might as well save your time and not bother going to court. A good family court judge discounts these orders unless they're backed by indpendent evidence anyway. They don't carry much weight in a custody battle. Judges aren't stupid, well some are....but the experienced family court judges have seen every trick in the book and aren't so easily misled by fluttering eyelashes and crocodile tears anymore.
Face it, men and women both abuse the system and drag their poor kids into it to be used as weapons against each other.

If there is a fear (supposed or real)that a woman has to begin with? It is possibly, because a fear has been planted that would give a woman probable cause for concern. No matter where you live, it's almost on a daily if not weekly basis that you hear of murder/suicide or just murder itself because of that supposed fear.

Your absolutely right! I've been married for 9 yrs this Oct. Our marriage is very volatile if I do something my wife doesn't like she get mad and pushes me and slaps and hits me. Unfortunately I don't bruise easily. There was a altercation the other week when I went to see my parents with our 2 children. She knew we went and I told her we might go to a high school football game at my old high school. we got home late. I put the kids to bed and climbed in bed. she Asked me where have I been. Did I see my girlfriend at the game. I have no girlfriend anywhere I'm married I said She precluded to hit me and slap I didn't fight back I just got up and went to the living room to sleep on the couch at her request. That wasn't good enough. She followed me screaming and yelling. So I stopped and told her the kids were sleeping not to wake them I told her we can finish this conversation in our room. that's when she proceded to shove me almost knocking me over into the wall. Slapping me and hitting me the whole time after regaining my stance. I told her to stop and calm down but it did no good. I turned and walked away that's when she it me in the back and shoved me again. I was in the kitchen by this time, so I made it to the phone and dialed the police. She call me a few explenitives and ran to the bed room. I thought it was over so I hung the phone up before the police answered. It didn't work she came back at me again. Pushing and hitting me again. I yelled at her to stop, but she refused. To get away I had to grab her throat and throw her to the couch where she hit her leg on the table near by. she laid on the couch crying about her leg for about 5 mins or so.The next day she had a bruise on her neck and one on her leg. what should I do the police was not notified. I don't stand a chance in the courts because I didn't bruise but she did. Her assault is just my word against hers

No the problem is that men do not listen to the wives. They are too involved in the sports etc. So the wives go to their girlfriends so they do have someone to talk to you moron.
