Birkitt is also reportedly the woman at the center of an alleged extortion plot against her ex-boss, David Letterman, who Thursday admitted to having sexual relationships with several of his female staffers. Two segments featuring Birkitt over the years:According to TMZ, Birkitt is the girlfriend and former roommate of Robert "Joe" Halderman, the '48 Hours' producer who was indicted Friday in a plot to blackmail Letterman out of $2 million in exchange for his silence on the affairs.
Halderman was reportedly in possession of Birkitt's diary and certain photos that he said would damage Letterman if made public.
Birkitt worked for Letterman for over a decade, and rose in the ranks to be his assistant. On several occasions, she appeared on the air in various skits and gags, including reports from the Winter Olympics in both 2002 and 2006.
It is believed Birkitt and Letterman had a sexual relationship that ended before his marriage and the birth of his son, Harry, in 2003. Sources tell RadarOnline.com that Birkitt is reportedly "mortified Halderman is using her fling with Letterman to blackmail her boss."
Birkitt is a 1997 graduate of Wake Forest University and Gawker is reporting that she received "extra compensation for duties as his First Assistant, in the form of Letterman picking up the tab for her graduate law studies at the Yeshiva University Law School."

how does anyone know that this isn't just one big publicity stunt? the main players are all coworkers and "the boss" intentionally made something that could have stayed private, public.
how can anyone trust anything being said?
letterman put his job on the line when confessing to having sex with an intern, like clinton, but maybe his job was already on the line because the changes going on in late night t.v? Isn't Leno the only talk show bachelor left working for the networks? Conan is married. Craig Ferguson is RECENTLY married and so is Letterman. Why are a bunch of LONG TIME bachelors getting married all of a sudden? Why did Leno leave late night when he's still doing the SAME thing on t.v?
lots of questions and no real answers. but it's obvious all three players are guilty of something.

Letterman is a loser plain and simple. Of course he had to pay these girls, who else would want the crass dog? Now I hope his network gets sued for sexual harassment and some of the women he demeaned so bad gets some revenge. Shame on the jerk who tried to blackmail him, but now we can do the 10 most on Letterman!

Imus today said letterman is a creep...
no doubt about it,.,.he is a creep..and
a self-serving, arrogant, shallow man.
his loyalty to his wife speaks volumes for the
low-life he is. can't imagine how he has much reputation to blackmail actually.

after reading these posts, all I can imagine, is that you haters are a bunch of losers who have never had the least chance of getting laid or making a descent living. what a bunch of losers that can not fathom a successful man who did nothing but act as a normal human being, and then when faced with a legal conundrum, did the right thing. All I can imagine is that, you are so ugly, so pedestrian, so banal, so mediocre, so egocentric and afraid to move out of your cookie cutter right wing shadow, that you are unable to have even one ounce of human courtesy toward another human being. A bunch of jealous, in the box, small-minded people.
OK you guys...this is all well and good, I have read your opinions and comments however but one question has not been asked "Is he good in the sack ?"

It's not a matter of two consenting adults having a sexual encounter, who cares about that?
This is about a boss having sex with his employees. That is a very different kettle of fish.
Letterman is a big name in television and doesn't just have the power to fire employees, but the clout to make or break people's long-term careers in the industry. Any woman he made advances to would have to at least think that her job could be on the line, and that he could make it difficult for her to work elsewhere. And what of the men who worked for Dave, or the women he didn't have the hots for? How fair was it for them to be competing for promotions and raises and office assignments with co-workers who were sleeping with the boss? Like that didn't put them at a disadvantage?
I am very disappointed in David Letterman, and his joking about the incident, painting himself as the "victim" and trying to make it seem as if the issue was just him "having sex".
He abused his power as a boss and that's flat-out wrong.

Undo, You hit the nail on the head. This can be a
real concern for CBS. As for Letterman, I do not care for him or his show because of his behavior on the show, and I hope that CBS looks into his very nasty, crass behavior. His apology to Palin was nothing but a joke another joke to him and not a real apology.
and not a real apology.
A woman would have to be pretty pathetic if she had
sex with Letterman. I mean look at him. He is nothing. I don't believe it happened. Just a publicity stunt because his ratings are so low.

There are laws about employers having sex with employees. Letterman is inviolation of all of these laws. Where are the enforcers?
Reply
Extortion is against the law. Having sex with a willing employee who is of age is not. Letterman is a victim, like it or not. As for the audience laughing, that's what the overhead monitors told them to do. Somebody wasn't on the ball there. I did find that distracting and prompted. Can't believe people didn't realize David wasn't joking and ignore the prompters. By the way, the person who threw Davids mom into this can of worms should be flogged. Leave that sweet woman out of this situation.

It was pretty obvious at the start that they were having an affair. He'd have her come on and do completely unnecessary things -- and Dave doesn't offer up his time to just anyone. (hmm, now I'm wondering about Chris Elliott...the guy under the stairs.) But, hey, it's not like he's a married President or anything. Clinton damaged the United States, all Dave has done is damage his "boy next door" image. I think we can deal with it.

10 reasons Dave was blackmailed
10. He forgot he was a show host.
9. Blame it on Bill Clinton
8. He just couldn't keep his zipper up.
7. Sarah Palin can't stomach him.
6. Madona was with ARod.
5. His wife of today wasn't paid enough to keep him busy.
4. His son asked him when he was going to marry mommy.
3. No 1 else would have him.
2. Viagra didn't help.
1. They had too to keep their job or be fired.

What Letterman put this girl through is deplorable. He insulted her on that clip for his sick yayas. I'm really disgusted by him and will never watch his show again. His sponsors should be contacted and boycotted.

What the hell show were you watching? Stephanie
was very funny in the skits. She worked there for
12 years. I am sure he does not want humorlous
people like you watching his show. NO DOUBT YOU
ARE A PALIN LOVER WHO IS STILL HATING ON LETTERMAN.

I don't understand why the fact that Letterman has had intimate relations with members of his staff is considered Controversial News. And "NO" it is Not Sexual Harassment, geeze! There is No way that Letterman Threatened Job security for Sex, and just a stupid thought altogether.
Being a "Bachelor" up until 5-7 months ago & joking about it over the years openly, and being a powerful public figure / entertainer, it's common sense that he'd be having Consentual sex with someone, without tarnishing the critical, self-righteous "family values" of this hypocritical country.
Furthermore, having an "on again - off again" relationship for over 20 years Doesn't Make a Marriage, or the restraints of a marriage. His wife Chose to get pregnant, have his baby & marry him after so many years of ups & downs, and is Not a victom in this scenario. Dave is being EXTORTED, "you simple, narrow-minded, Self righteous nazi's".
Since NONE of the women in Letterman's life EVER presented him in a bad light, Nor are ANY of Them Blackmailing him, Slandering him or Suing him, Letterman should not be compared with the highly paid yet useless Public officials who are paid by tax payers to represent the values of it's constituents, yet fall way short, then LIE about a VARIETY of Issues & Accusations. It is the scenarios of these LIERS that Letterman pokes fun at, and therefore sets him Way above them, and that includes that moronically horny Palin Family. People don't have to watch Letterman by choice, but are forced to recon with the lying Government Officials, while paying their useless exuberant salaries, while they LIE to Us.
Letterman has never presented himself as "holier than thou", and the first to poke fun at himself when a point can be made or a laugh can be found. Here he has utilized his position wisely, and attempting to make light of what would soon have been a horrible scandal anyway. Letterman is paid to entertain & he did, while including his viewers in personal News which is going to be made public anyway.
Letterman being Blackmailed by a horrible & self serving, well paid CBS Producer Is The Crime and the Story. And that should be the focus of this scenario, not on who Letterman spends his private time with or how his time is spent.
Hang in there Dave!
