Despite his mad professor-meets-Mad Max appearance, Russell Brand sure knows how to woo the ladies with his sensitive side ... just ask singer Katy Perry. The London Sun has revealed that Brand won the heart of Perry by penning the songstress a love poem after last month's MTV Video Music Awards. Maybe the recovered sex addict has a sweet side after all, or maybe he just has some great game. Our experts weigh in on the appeal of Brand's brand days after Perry was photographed leaving his London flat (in the photos above).
"Writing a love poem for a woman is ultra romantic and is irresistible to practically everyone. I am sure it has worked with many, many women in the past , which is probably why he is doing it with Katy!" explains dating coach Tracey Steinberg about Brand's shtick. "Let's just all hope that she doesn't forget that he is an addict, bipolar, and an award-winning ladies man with a criminal record longer than Santa Claus's list on Christmas Eve."
Male dating personal trainer Evan Marc Katz has a different opinion. He thinks Perry fell for Brand and not his adolescent games.
"It's easy to try to bust on a guy who comes up with a love poem for you ... except if you like him, you'll probably swoon," Katz tells PopEater. "In other words, Katy Perry's decision wasn't based on the poem. It was based on the guy. The poem was incidental."
Poem aside, Brand does come with baggage. He is an admitted former heroin and sex addict and a recovering alcoholic. But Brand has reportedly been sober since 2002 and though the notches on his bed post look like a Dan Brown lost code by now, Brand hasn't been spotted out with any ladies since he went on a few dates with Hugh Hefner's ex Holly Madison over the summer.
After Perry took the love letter bait, Brand reportedly whisked her on a romantic trip to Thailand, The "Waking Up in Vegas" songstress let the cat out of the bag when she tweeted about how awesome her trip was. And a pal of Perry's told the Sun, "she thinks he is hilarious and incredibly sexy."
"Old Russ as us Americans affectionately call him has created the ultimate 'brand.' He's gruffy, scruffy, quite cheeky and he's clearly sexy - enough so that he had to go rehab for it!!" explains Samantha Marcus Yanks, Fashion & Accessories editor of Niche Media's Gotham, Hamptons and Los Angeles Confidential magazines.
"Couple his hair experiment with loads of jewelry, super tight skinny pants, and an undeniably hilarious personality and the former shag addict is totally irresistible. The gent is as funny as they come and that gets you a long way with the ladies."
Bad boy shtick aside, doesn't Russell Brand seem just a little bit...gross, what with the mad greasy mane and out of control chest hair? Our experts say it is all just a carefully crafted façade.
"He is what we like to call a secret groomer," says grooming guru Margaret Kelly of Lock & Mane to PopEater. "It takes a lot of products to look that dirty, so while he may look unwashed, up close we bet he smells delicious."
Style expert Jenn Falik thinks women are attracted to Brand's total package and are able to overlook his sometimes-absurd outward appearance.
"Brand is what he is - and women can't help but be attracted to that kind of confidence. Even if it does come in package topped off with a head of hair that has that 'I stuck my finger in an electric socket' style," Falik says. "The fact that he has a sense of humor about pretty much everything- including himself and his appearance- makes it easy to laugh with him, not at him."
Russell Brand was hilarious in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' and I can see why they chose him to host the MTV Music Awards show, but he was a TERRIBLE host. His jokes either fell flat or were so nasty I sat in my living room blushing and wanting to change the channel (but was outvoted). The article mentions his criminal record, but never says what he was accused or convicted of.... Shame he has so many feel-good/forget-my-pain addictions (sex/drugs/booze).
...it's a metaphor for a crap movie..." any Forgetting Sarah Marshall fans will remember his excellent scene stealing moments, look forward to seeing him in any movie he is in. A little wierd, but sexy as hell.
She went out with him after that classless comment he made after her performance? She deserves him. I think he's a no talent, and I don't find him funny at all.
