Not long after David Letterman made a public apology during Monday's episode, more scandalous details about his affair with 'Late Show' staffer Stephanie Birkitt started to surface -- including diary excerpts about their sexual relations.
Birkitt's diary revealed that she and Letterman enjoyed romantic hikes last fall at his sprawling ranch in eastern Montana -- where he was married in March -- while her boyfriend Robert "Joe" Halderman stayed home in Connecticut, sources told The NY Post. While she tried to keep it a secret, Halderman eventually found Birkitt's diary in December and learned she was still carrying on a steamy affair with Letterman.
At the time, Birkitt, 34, insisted to Halderman that she and the 62-year-old Letterman had just "a platonic relationship," a source said. "I'm his best friend," Birkitt allegedly told her worried beau. Letterman would also drive Birkitt home to Norwalk, Conn., where she had been sharing a house with Halderman since he divorced his wife in 2004, sources said. The comedian lived with his longtime girlfriend and their son in Westchester.
Even after Birkitt graduated in June 2008, Letterman offered her a job as his personal lawyer. According to sources, Birkitt used the offer to persuade Halderman to have children with her, saying she would bring in the bucks with her new job and he could stay home. He and Birkitt had stayed together until last month, when they split up and his financial and emotional turmoil hit a breaking point.
In early September, prosecutors said Halderman allegedly began the extortion plot by dropping off, in Letterman's limousine, a purported screenplay outline about a talk-show host who is brought down by an affair, as well as copies of sections of Birkitt's diaries. Halderman was busted after collecting a bogus $2 million check from Letterman's lawyer last week, prosecutors said. He is free on $200,000 bond and left his home on Monday.
Then during last Thursday's show, Letterman revealed to his audience that he had sexual affairs with female staffers and allegedly had been the target of a related $2 million extortion plot by Halderman. The host made an additional apology to his wife on his Oct. 5 show. (Get the full story.) "She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it," Letterman told the crowd about wife Regina Lasko during his monologue.

"Vicki"
"At that point, there's only two things that can happen: Either you're going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you're going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me," Letterman said.
Meanwhile Halderman's lawyer, Gerald Shargel, went on a media offensive. "David Letterman didn't give [Halderman's] side of the story. David Letterman gave what he wanted the public to know," Shargel told NBC's 'Today' show.
He also told Fox News' 'Geraldo at Large' that "there is a lot more to the story... There is a big issue about exactly who David Letterman was having an affair with... Someone did someone wrong other than my client," Shargel said.

Pop Eater Snap Polls are a joke. When asked if my opinion of David Letterman changed I wanted to say "no" because he's always been a rude, immoral person. I answered "yes" so the poll would show that I think his latest actions are unacceptable. It is no surprise he'd say horrible things about Sarah Palin's daughter while cheating on his own wife and making life miserable for all the people who helped him to have a successful show. The insensitivity of it all makes me yearn for the days of Johnny Carson. . .now that was "keeping it classy." Seems a double standard to me that Letterman can take shots at everyone else and we're expected to keep our comments regarding him classy.
David Letterman is a sociopathic liar that is totally immoral and without concern for anyone or anything but himself. The pain he causes others is irrelavent to him. May he receive his just reward.
What in the world makes you think Johnny Carson was so moral? The man was married 3 times! Every one of them a Joan or Joanna! It was a constant source of jokes on his show. In fact, at one point he talked nightly about his divorce drama. Johnny was no saint, sister, so don't compare what David Letterman is going through against Johnny Carson. The only difference between them is that the media is so hungry for gossip in this day and time.
I think Mr. Letterman made a large mistake embarrasing his wife and family with this behavior. However this matter is between his wife and himself and I think he does have his work cut out for him and he should do what ever it takes to make ammends to those that matter the most. I hope it works out for him and hopefully his wife can forgive him his indiscretions
Oh...so this is about Sarah Palin...and not about the extortion and breaking the law. Whether one likes Letterman or not, a crime has been committed here. Letterman - a comediain/entertainer, has NO reason to explain his private/single life to anyone, (unlike someone who was running for the second highest office in the land and her unwed daughter had a child out of wedlock) he now chooses to because of an extortion attempt - and obviously that guy is winning because what he set out to do, he's getting away with.
You need to do your homework before posting comments on people's lives you know nothing about.
Letterman was having an affair with Birkett last fall. He hasn't had any contact with her since his marriage. Did you know that Ms. Lasko (Letterman's wife) knew of Dave & Stephanie's relationship before she had a child with him and before she married him? She did. It will all come out.
As far as Letterman making his Palin jokes, he's not a politician and doesn't preach from a pulpit the way Sister Sarah does and turn around and do something else. She is a hypocrite that is practically responsible for taking down the entire republican party. Dave was hired a comedian (whether you like him or not) and a talk show host. He's not on TV to raise moral standards as a politician when speaking of family values.
As for Carson being "classy," he had the worst reputation in the business for being an out-of-line alcoholic and ruining careers of anyone that disagreed with him. Joan Rivers anyone? Don't misunderstand me, I adored Carson on the air and don't think we'll ever see the likes of his talent ever again, but please refrain from using the term "classy" when it comes to The All Time King of Late Night. He was far from it. Just ask three of his four wives that he cheated on.
Lynn Iam with you. I quit watching Letterman months ago. It is evident that he is the center of his own universe and he is doing and saying anything to save his hide. That huge EGO gets em everytime......
Oh, yeah. Carson was the bastion of decency. He went through wives like tissue paper. He screwed around like a rabbit in heat. It just wasn't as publicized because it was before everything hit the internet while the philanderers were still getting dressed. Get a reality check.
Get over it. When people like Sarah Palin put themselves and their family in front of millions of people both on television and also with her interviews, there are no holes barred. She's a liar, dumb, and hopefully you will not continue to compare Palin the idiot to David Letterman. She is in a league of her own; the stupid league.
yes. Johnny Carson...his 5 ex wives and more affairs on the side than Letterman could dream of I am sure are in agreement with you. Go back to your little cave.

I don't believe he was married at the time.
But it's OK if Sarah Palin cheats on her husband? She isn't exactly a pillar of morality either.
I could not agree more. Dido

Should have made the poll a top 10 list!
Yes .. I am sure joanne carson agrees with you! Jonny was philandering drunk back in the 70's. The only difference was, he showed up drunk on the set.
Lynn Iam with you. I quit watching Letterman months ago. It is evident that he is the center of his own universe and he is doing and saying anything to save his hide. That huge EGO gets em everytime......
Carson was married 3 times I believe. He was a womanizer and lost a lot of his fortune to his ex-wifes.
Lynn, I voted the same as you for exactly the same reasons as you. I couldn't have said it better.
