Birkitt Pens Letterman Affair in Her Diary

Not long after David Letterman made a public apology during Monday's episode, more scandalous details about his affair with 'Late Show' staffer Stephanie Birkitt started to surface -- including diary excerpts about their sexual relations.

Birkitt's diary revealed that she and Letterman enjoyed romantic hikes last fall at his sprawling ranch in eastern Montana -- where he was married in March -- while her boyfriend Robert "Joe" Halderman stayed home in Connecticut, sources told The NY Post. While she tried to keep it a secret, Halderman eventually found Birkitt's diary in December and learned she was still carrying on a steamy affair with Letterman.

At the time, Birkitt, 34, insisted to Halderman that she and the 62-year-old Letterman had just "a platonic relationship," a source said. "I'm his best friend," Birkitt allegedly told her worried beau. Letterman would also drive Birkitt home to Norwalk, Conn., where she had been sharing a house with Halderman since he divorced his wife in 2004, sources said. The comedian lived with his longtime girlfriend and their son in Westchester.

Even after Birkitt graduated in June 2008, Letterman offered her a job as his personal lawyer. According to sources, Birkitt used the offer to persuade Halderman to have children with her, saying she would bring in the bucks with her new job and he could stay home. He and Birkitt had stayed together until last month, when they split up and his financial and emotional turmoil hit a breaking point.

In early September, prosecutors said Halderman allegedly began the extortion plot by dropping off, in Letterman's limousine, a purported screenplay outline about a talk-show host who is brought down by an affair, as well as copies of sections of Birkitt's diaries. Halderman was busted after collecting a bogus $2 million check from Letterman's lawyer last week, prosecutors said. He is free on $200,000 bond and left his home on Monday.

Then during last Thursday's show, Letterman revealed to his audience that he had sexual affairs with female staffers and allegedly had been the target of a related $2 million extortion plot by Halderman. The host made an additional apology to his wife on his Oct. 5 show. (Get the full story.) "She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it," Letterman told the crowd about wife Regina Lasko during his monologue.

"At that point, there's only two things that can happen: Either you're going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you're going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me," Letterman said.

Meanwhile Halderman's lawyer, Gerald Shargel, went on a media offensive. "David Letterman didn't give [Halderman's] side of the story. David Letterman gave what he wanted the public to know," Shargel told NBC's 'Today' show.

He also told Fox News' 'Geraldo at Large' that "there is a lot more to the story... There is a big issue about exactly who David Letterman was having an affair with... Someone did someone wrong other than my client," Shargel said.

Who cares? Does this really surprise anyone? This is common in our society today. This is between David and his wife. If they work it out, good for them, if not move on. He says he is sorry, if you believe that then you are dumber then a box of rocks. He is sorry he got caught. If she stays then he will do it again, that is who he is simple as that.

I think it is SO funny that the majority of "people" who now dislike Letterman are woman. These are jilted wives or women spinsters- or just pathetic housewives who's hubbies dipped their ink in another fountain... who ever they are, i say to you: BIG DEAL!! So he had affairs with other women while he was UNMARRIED. AGAIN, NOT MARRIED. GET OVER IT ALREADY. The only difference between him and 45 % of other males is that Letterman either got caught or is in the public eye so "everyone" knows about it. Again: WHO CARES* Hey, I like lobster, but if I ate it everyday for the rest of my life - I may like to indluge in some prime rib. He wasnt married so who frigging cares.
I like Letterman - I'd slept with him too if given half the chance. Go point your angier at your own cheating husbands or wandering eye guys and leave Letterman alone already ladies.
I will contine to watch his show. I enjoy his show and that has notto to do with his "affairs".

Now if only Mr. Letterman would say pretty much the same thing instead of running his public relations position to a cheering audience during this business. If you've really "hurt" your family and are playing at remorse (yes, you got caught)...get them the hell out of your self-serving monologue. Get back to entertaining your shrinking audience.
I stood in the rain to see his Chicago show years ago when he had more humanity. Less arrogance. So above the frey..."bad Gov. Sanford, bad Gov. Spitzer"...better gets some curtains to cover-up that glass house.
How many lies are told to conduct these kinds of affairs? That's the tough part. And if there are children who are hurt as well. Just think before, "it just happens". He sounds as though he found a good partner in deception with young Ms. Birkett. Sloppy seconds.

Letterman makes a living off making fun of others weaknesses and pain. I think he got what he deserves. It's not unforgivable but it does go to show that you reap what you sow. I feel sorry for his wife and child. Although it happens all of the time, it is very painful when you are the one that was cheated on.

Face it, all celebs, real or imagined are whores. male or female, big,small, doesn't matter.... There is NO SUCH THING as fidelity... No man has ever turned down a fee peice............. Some are just better than others at getting away with it... They all try... I work in a hospital and it is a hotbed for the males to score. MDs , male nurses.. they are all sniffing along behind the females.. Hoping to get a free lay..........and usually do.. Don't you get sick and tired of hearing the crap these so-called bright, intelligent people who make excuses for their behavior and how they want to get their relationship with their wife/husband, partner, etc., back on track. Edwards in my opinion is the worst - betraying his wife who had just been diagnosed with breast cancer, and that governor in SC whose delightful wife gave handouts to the press (I really like that one), and now Letterman - and goodness only knows who else - those poor wives trying to look normal when they really want to throw up all over the jerk, is just plain sickening. Now, Letterman wants to use his show to "confess his sins" to the world - does he think he will be forgiven by doing it that way? I just think he should disappear into the cracks in the wall and will never be heard from again.
