If the judge ALLOWS the name change? If a woman marries, she is legally entitled to take (or not take) the husband's name. Same goes for divorce; the woman may opt to drop the husband's name. Of course, social security must be notified of the changes but no judge is necessary to OK it. As long as there is no intent to commit fraud, no judge is needed to decide if a woman can change her name. And for all those buttheads out there debating the black/white thing: MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS YOU JEALOUS LOSERS!

It is legal to assume your new husband's name at the time of your marriage (or even shortly thereafter), but Heidi has been married for some years now. So she needs to go to court to change her surname.
In Washington state it's a rather simple thing that you can do without legal representation. You purchase and fill out forms, file them with the court clerk and then wait for an appointment with a Court Commissioner. He/she will ask you a few questions, you answer and then the commissioner usually signs the court order. You file it with the clerk and "you're done."
They seem happy and their children appear well-mannered and respectful. They make a great couple, and they seem happy. I wish them the best!
