The producers of 'Survivor' weren't kidding when they claimed this season would feature their biggest villain ever. "Evil" Russell Hantz is apparently on 'Survivor: Samoa' for one purpose - to make everyone else miserable. Heck, the self-made multi-millionaire doesn't even need the money. This hasn't stopped him from sabotaging his own team's water supply, burning their clothing, lying about being a victim of Hurricane Katrina and slandering his alliance members behind their backs. Throw in a fictional story about a dead dog and we have to say Russell is the chairman of the 'Survivor' villainy department - and we're only three episodes in!
With this in mind, we thought it might be a good time to take a stroll down bad memory lane and revisit some of the other meanies who have made 'Survivor' so fun by being so easy to hate.
Richard Hatch won the first season by manipulating and backstabbing everyone in a particularly smug and obnoxious manner - and he did it all naked. He's now serving time in prison, which he claims is because he was such a convincing TV villain that even the government wanted to take him down. That's dedication.
We're all for girl power, but 'Survivor: Micronesia' contestant Natalie Bolton might have taken the concept a little too far. In her attempts to set up an all female final four, Natalie not only ignored strategic opportunities, she did it in part because she was busy imagining herself "flossing my teeth with [a teammate's] jugular."
For decades, psychologists have debated just how people become villains. Is it in their nature or because of their environment? Poor Eliza Orlins is exhibit A in the "nurture" argument, as she became a villain for the simplest of reasons: she happened to be constantly surrounded by a group of people she absolutely hated.
Last season featured "Coach" Ben Wade, who supplemented his Steven Segal impersonation with outrageous stories; not only did he supposedly escape an attack from cannibalistic Peruvian Pygmies and inspire the Tom Hanks film 'Cast Away,' he also claimed to be the only person in America taught a secret Chinese martial art. You and me both, buddy.
Courtney Yates was the rarest of reality contestants – one who hated reality shows. But then, she pretty much seemed to dislike everything and everyone, leveling her detached hipster sarcasm at any poor fool who wandered into her sight – such as all of her tribemates.
Perhaps the most miserable contestant in 'Survivor' history was Randy Bailey, who treated every basic human interaction as a personal insult and reacted accordingly. His official CBS bio said it best: "Randy describes himself as angry, blunt, mean and sarcastic (yet charming), and admits he's a train wreck." Other than the charming part, America agreed.
"Boston" Rob Mariano made a name for himself by lying, insulting everyone behind their backs (which he then stabbed) and generally being an insufferable jerk. Despite this, he managed to make a career out of being a TV personality, in part because he treated the game like a game and in part because he often saved his meanest maneuvers for other unpopular 'Survivor' villains like Lex van den Berghe.
The previous title holder of Biggest 'Survivor' Villain had to be Jon Dalton, aka Johnny Fairplay. Johnny endeared himself to... nobody... when he tried to elicit sympathy from his tribemates by claiming his grandmother had suddenly died during filming of the show.
He is a butt wipe! but for some reason, the rest of the Survivor cast doesn't realize it yet. For some reason, they trust him. He's just a snake and got rid of the two women who knew it! They were the only two people who voiced their opinion about him - and now, they are both gone! I'm sure someone on there will eventually catch on to his devious ways - I sure hope he doesn't make it to the end!
Sure he's a bad guy...but I love to watch him and will be sad to see him go. He's just what Survivor needed to make the show more exciting to watch. I've heard rumors that he'll be in next seasons "heros vs villians" show and I can't wait to see how well the villians get along! lol
...And no one's figured it out yet that he's a plant by CBS Intelligencia (there's a contradiction in terms) in order to spice up a series and genre that is now pretty much dead? Why isn't it that people are ripping CBS for doing this? Part of 'Reality TV' is that it IS REALITY! It is not intentional pre-manipulation of an otherwise 'genuine' event.

Courtney, a "villain?" Really?? I'd have included Jerri from season 2 instead. But kudos for including Natalie! Ugh she was evil.
