Hollywood heartthrob
Orlando Bloom has been named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in recognition of his commitment to the rights of kids all over the world,
Reuters reports.
Bloom, star of '
Lord of the Rings' and '
Pirates of the Caribbean,' has supported UNICEF since 2007. He has visited UN projects in Sarajevo, Russia and Nepal providing education, shelter and clean water to kids.
"I look forward to working with UNICEF as they continue to make the world a better place for children," said Bloom in a written statement.
"We are proud to have Orlando Bloom as one of the strong voices for vulnerable children," glowed Ann M. Veneman, Executive Director of UNICEF.
Ambassadors are important because they help "build momentum to improve the lives of children around the world," said Veneman. Other notable celebrity ambassadors include Los Angeles Galaxy soccer player
David Beckham, hip-shaking singer
Shakira,
Woody Allen's muse
Mia Farrow and Hollywood luminary
Audrey Hepburn. Ambassadors raise awareness of UNICEF and influence policy on behalf of children.
"UNICEF doesn't just deliver humanitarian aid, which is what they are known for all over the world," said Bloom. "They also educate and provide tools which help women and children face challenges specific to their own lives," he continued.
Bloom is scheduled to record a public service announcement focusing on the importance of access to clean drinking water later this week. He previously participated in a local radio broadcast produced by school children in one of the poorest parts of Nepal.
Bloom's new movie, the romantic ensemble '
New York, I Love You,' opens on Friday.
Orlando Bloom, 32, was born and trained as an actor in England and has quickly become one of Hollywood's most bankable stars after starring in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Lord of the Rings' trilogies. He has appeared in 4 of the top 15 grossing films of all time as of May 2007. Bloom revealed that he does not wish to return to play Will Turner in the next 'Pirates' sequel opposite
Johnny Depp, scheduled for release in May 2011.
