Dissecting 'Nip/Tuck': Its Stars Open Up

While critics and fans alike may be drooling over Ryan Murphy's new hit 'Glee,' his sexy show 'Nip/Tuck' is wrapping up, with the season premiere on Oct. 14 kicking off the sixth and final season. PopEater caught up with actresses Kelly Carlson and Roma Maffia to get the scoop on what's in store.

The main cast of 'Nip/Tuck' has survived five seasons of blood and betrayal. We've seen the plastic surgery practice McNamara/Troy rise and fall in Miami, only to take their business to Los Angeles in season five. In season six, we can expect more life-changing developments for each of the characters, says Maffia, who plays lesbian anesthesiologist (and sometimes moral compass to Sean and Christian), Liz Cruz.

"We're going to see them go through some metamorphosis in some way," she said. "On a scale of one to 10, some do 10, some do two, but everyone does go through a change, for the better or for the worst," Maffia said.

'Nip/Tuck' readily provides viewers with near-constant, turbulent drama – in the form of paternity tests, love affairs, murders, health scares, drug abuse and even Scientology. Last season, notorious womanizer Christian Troy married Liz after receiving a fatal prognosis of breast cancer. The cliffhanger ending? Mixed up test results – he's cancer free. Will we see any resolve?

"Oh yeah," Maffia says. "That will be a topic of discussion."

And of course, there's all those surgeries.

"One thing that I love about the show is that those cases have been done in reality, which I think is so smart of Ryan," Maffia says. "If he had created those, it's like sci-fi. But that they've actually happened, so it blows my mind even more."

Last season, viewers saw a host of strange and inventive procedures. From growing a human ear on the back of a mouse, to a set of blood-lusting "vampires" looking to repair a near fatal love bite, the cases only seem to get more extreme, more personal and more unique as the show progresses.

Carlson, who plays cunning blonde bombshell Kimber Henry, says the show will stay true to life in that regard, too. As the economy worsens, expensive surgeries decrease and injection procedures take their place.

"They touch on how the trend in plastic surgery has gone away from plastic surgery and more to injectables," Carlson said. "It's pretty current with the economy situation, people can't afford plastic surgery and they're going toward injectables and how the trend affects their business."

It's not only McNamara/Troy that's feeling the financial struggle.

"The economy has affected Kimber, and she goes into a couple different lines of work that are, of course, untraditional," Carlson hints.

But, she says, the love lives of the characters will be at the forefront of the storylines. Rose McGowan joins the cast as Teddy Rowe, Sean's current girlfriend, and Mario Lopez returns as Dr. Mike Hamoui as not only Christian's antagonist, but a love interest to Kimber, Carlson says. The show has had a fabulous pedigree of guest stars supplementing the cast throughout every season, from Vanessa Redgrave to Jacqueline Bisset to Oliver Platt.

"All of our guest stars have been strong," Carlson says. "I can't even think of one who wasn't."

Between the state of the storyline and the addition of new characters to spice things up, it's sure to be one wild finish for one of cable's edgiest dramas.

"I've loved everything I've done," Carlson says. "I've never had a bad day on that show. I miss it a lot, without a doubt."

Maffia, too, is feeling the loss.

"I love the character of Liz," she says. "She's one of the best characters I've ever had the opportunity to play and I will miss her. I already miss her."

Aww. We'll miss Liz, too, along with Sean, Christian, Kimber, Matt, and all those crazy surgeries.
