Who Is Max Martin? A Hitmaking 'Beast'

Sure, it was
Katy Perry who kissed a girl and
Britney Spears who sang "Livin' in sin is the new thing," but the words are actually those of
Max Martin, a 38-year-old Swedish producer that some would argue is the biggest pop songwriter in the world.
"He was the guy who ushered in teen pop being more like a form of creative expression," Ann Powers, pop music critic for the L.A. Times tells PopEater. "Look at [producers] Stargate, Ryan Tedder -- they wouldn't exist without Max or the success he had. There's been a huge shift in the 21st century towards appreciating mainstream pop and I would base that as a shift to when Max Martin started."
If these sound like heady claims, just ask one of the artists most closely associated with Martin's rise and career. "I've always credited Max with being the godfather, the Berry Gordy of the
Backstreet Boys," BSB member Howie Dorough says. "He helped us establish our sound and some of our biggest hits have come from him, so we will always be indebted to Max. He truly could be the sixth Backstreet Boy."
So who is this man with the Midas touch when it comes to writing hits? Born in Stockholm, Martin actually started his music career as the frontman of glam-metal act It's Alive in the mid-'80s. The band was signed to Cherion Records, a label owned by Denniz Pop, who recruited Martin to become a producer/songwriter after It's Alive proved to be the only thing Martin was involved in that didn't top the charts.
Dorough believes Martin's rock background is a big part of the reason for his success. "I always foresee his best stuff along the line of where his heart's at, and that's almost more of pop with a little bit of a rock tinge to it," he says. "Some of his big stuff with
Pink or
Kelly Clarkson, 'Since U Been Gone,' it's pop-rock."
Martin returned to his rock roots last year when he helmed the L.A.-based alternative band Carolina Liar's debut, 'Coming to Terms,' which spawned the hit single, 'Show Me What I'm Looking For.' In an interview he did last year with Popjustice -- only his second chat with the press in 10 years -- Martin was asked if he thought Carolina Liar frontman Chad Wolf would have a problem working with "Britney producer Max Martin." "I guess in his position he didn't really have a choice," he told the website, laughing. "He sent me his stuff when it was all getting done and he didn't really send it anywhere else, so I got him early!"
Wolf tells PopEater he didn't have a problem working with Martin, but he does admit he had early doubts about listening to Martin's work. "I remember when Britney's 'Baby One More Time' came out. I couldn't listen to it 'cause I was like, 'Oh, it's Britney.' But then I listened to the melody," he says. "His stuff is rock 'n' roll. It's four chords."
In a huge compliment, Wolf likens Martin's songs to "
Prince's mid-'80s stuff." Once again, high praise indeed, but artists and industry types continually refer to Martin as having indelible ears. "Max definitely writes hit records like no other," Rani Hancock, an A&R rep at RCA, says. "He has an amazing sense of lyric and melody, and he always comes up with these brilliant lyric concepts that are not only hits, but are very identifiable."
Those words have brought controversy for some, specifically with Spears' 'If U Seek Amy' and '3,' but Martin has remained unscathed, mostly because he keeps such a low profile. For her part, Melissa Henson of the Parents Television Council, who implored radio not to play 'If U Seek Amy' during certain hours, believes that is fair. "The artist tends to be more well-known than the songwriter, so much of the blame is assigned to the artist," she says. "Each artist creates their own brand and they have to be responsible for how it's portrayed, so rightly or wrongly the focus is on them. Our concern is mostly with the recording artists who children look up to as role models. It's their image kids are trying to emulate."
Obviously, Martin is happy to remain in the background, churning out hits. "He's a beast," Wolf says. "He takes his work very seriously. He never stops." Fans shouldn't expect the run to stop anytime soon, as he is collaborating with
Adam Lambert and
Carrie Underwood. "He definitely has the ability to tailor a song to a specific artist," Hancock says. "When you hear a Max Martin record, you don't necessarily say it's a Max Martin record, you say it's a Kelly Clarkson smash."
Dorough, who worked Martin for multiple songs on the new Backstreet Boys album, 'This Is Us,' agrees. "He's a chameleon," he says. "With us in the very beginning, even from Ace of Base to us to Pink to Britney to Kelly Clarkson, he definitely adapts himself to whatever artist he works with."

Finally, a songwriter getting the attention rather than the artists who claim his songs as theirs!!!

I am a huge Max Martin fan! He has made all these incredible pop records for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Ace of Base, a few for NSYNC and moved forward to people like Kelly Clarkson, Pink and Katy Perry! And Show Me What You're Looking For for Carolina Liar--remarkable pop song that he produced for the band! He has these undeniable pop hooks and melodies in the songs he produces for artists! Even though he keeps a low profile, his songs are recognizable when you hear them! He makes the artist stand out more in the songs he produces!

He may have some pretty catchy tunes but he's used a special gift for the wrong reasons. I have to say, being a Christian, I personally oppose some of his lyrics which have a bad influence on youth today. I'm also surprised that Carrie Underwood would collaborate with him since she had the hit "Jesus Take the Wheel". I guess you've gotta 'conform to the world' to stay on top-just as the Word of God says, sad but true.

so popular culture should always conform to your personal religion Natalie? Despite the fact that more than 2/3rds of the world doesn't follow your religion?
Natalie, Really, I'll pray for you to find some brains. How do you function in the real world? Isn't it weird that the end of your name is lie, are you fooling yourself. Or is the rest of us, telling us you know what your talking about.
I agree with you Natalie and just because some don't want to acknowledge that there is a God now, all will know he is Lord very shortly. I can guarantee you that those who have turned away will call upon him when an earthquake hits, a tornado or any other natural or personal disaster that is beyond their control. They all forget that we all die and to live capriciously and buy into the corruptness of this world will be their downfall. Especially since this world is temporary. The 2/3 can believe that they were spattered into this world or they can believe in Jesus and the God who created it!
Just to let you know Theresa.... Most of the "corruptness" of this world come from people that believe in your god... More people have died in the name of your god than any other reason...
It's not the music. The way Spears is marketed, she could go on stage and throw up---and kids would buy it.

Well said. I'm glad someone feels the same as I do. She is too much.

I think we all have our problems. But why do women feel like they have to exploit themselves to be recognized? Britney Spears seems lost and out of touch. The only thing that will bring anyone a shred of sanity, hit or not, is to get a grasp on values. The war inside ones soul because of lack of respect for values only reaps more grief. I have a close friend who is a female, and she has completely given herself to a chaotic lifestyle, when in times past it was her lecturing me about my bad habits and her being wise and under control. Then out of the blue she just completely gave herself to worthless men who had no intentions on giving her one thing that makes love work. Faithfulness. Now my friend has a sexual transmitted disease.

I couldn't agree more, Spears was a marketing product and can't sing a lick. Her "product" was steered toward the youth that would bug their parents to death to buy her music that they (the parents) would prefer to duct tape pillows on their ears. Too me, she sounds like a chipmunk that sucked too much helium.
Once upon a time, you could tell the good music from the bad. American Top 40, American Bandstand, Solid Gold... shows rated the songs each week and you knew the hits from the misses. You knew the artists and the styles. Nowadays the charts are filled with so much fluff and pseudo-stars you cant tell good from bad anymore. Brittney Spears owes her success to marketing, nothing more. Her voice sounds like sandpaper on a chalkboard. Shes a psych case in need of constant attention. She would do the world a favor by fading away. Who's watching the kids?

wow, you have a cold, cold heart and sometday it will return on you, good luck. And may you be ready for what follows. Take care
I love Max Martin's lyrics...and as far as BRITNEY SPEARS, she's the queen of pop. Complaining about her isnt going to stop her from being number one.
She has soooo many fans to back her up. If you don't like her then simply just don't listen to her music.

pop music is a horrible thing. Imagine a cure for polio that has the side affect of giving you AIDS. That's what pop music is to me. That makes Max Martin a demon corporate whore.

Britney Spears doesn't deserve all of the bashing that she gets. After all.... if you could have the amount of influential power that she has, all the money she has, and that many people lusting over you... lets be honest, wouldnt you give it a shot.
