'Risky Business' Star Calls Tom Cruise 'Biggest Bore on the Face of the Earth'
Bronson Pinchot is most famous for his portrayal of goofy foreigner Balki Bartokomous on '
Perfect Strangers,' but the actor made his film debut in 'Risky Business.' In a candid interview with
The A.V. Club, Pinchot admits the experience gave him a less-than-favorable impression of co-star
Tom Cruise. In fact, Pinchot says, the superstar was "was the biggest bore on the face of the Earth" at the age of 20.
He explains: "Tom had picked up this knack of calling everyone by their character names ... I think that acting is acting, and the rest of the time, you should be you, but he called us all by our character names."
"He made constant, constant unrelated homophobic comments, like, 'You want some ice cream, in case there are no gay people there?' ... There was no basis for it. It was like, "It's a nice day, I'm glad there are no gay people standing here." Very, very strange. Years and years later when people started to torment him with that, I used to think 'God, that's really fitting, because he tormented a lot of people as a 20-year-old.'"
Pinchot adds, "If someone's 20 years old and every third line out of their mouth is anti-something specific, then draw your own conclusion."
The actor has a similarly damning opinion of
Denzel Washington, calling him "one of the most unpleasant human beings I've ever met in my life," but he calls one actor "the antidote": Tom Hanks. The two met when Pinchot performed in a play with Hanks' wife Rita Wilson, and he still considers Hanks "a wonderful and genuine and lovely and down-to-earth person ... so it's not really true that big stars need to be driven and repulsive, because he's anything but."
Cruise's publicist, Cheryl Maisel, responds to Pinchot's accusations in a statement printed by
TV Guide. "Obviously this is so far removed from who Tom Cruise is as a person, this must have been said in jest," Maisel writes.

Why does Pinchot have the need to talk about something that happened when Tom was 20 years old??Also about Denzel?? I think Pinchot is very talented but these kinds of statements are a real turn-off.

Tom forced the "Interview With A Vampire" film to be shot as a gay film. Brad Pitt protested, but the Director and Producer said, "Tom wants to do it gay... so we're doin' it gay!"
I see what you're saying, but I think what happened is this...Pinchot doesn't have a whole lot going on these days. The reporter may have interviewed him for an hour, asked many questions, and this was the only thing Bronson briefly mentioned that would stir up enough interest to give a headline good enough to make people click on the article. Hits on the article = advertizers = $ for AOL.
maybe Pinchot is gay and has hated Cruise since that time.........so what if he is gay? He just has to accept that people are different and not always appropriate. All of us breathing are guilty of that
You are SO RIGHT!!! IT IS THE MEDIA MORONS who "dig up" this crap, and since most of it can NOT be verified (due to age or hearsay) the IDIOT WHO WRITES IT is "safe" as the equally moronic Editor allows it to be printed. This way the IDIOTIC MEDIA MORON who wrote it looks like they were working and gets their paycheck -- and possibly starts a fight that they can then "report on". It's an old trick that anyone who has studied progaganda tactics has learned.
Tom Cruise has entertained the world for years with well made, classy movies. Same with Denzel Washington. Who cares if they are boring, arrogant, or obnoxious in their personal lives. That's for their wives and families to determine and tolerate.
Quantum, you said: "Tom forced the "Interview With A Vampire" film to be shot as a gay film. Brad Pitt protested, but the Director and Producer said, "Tom wants to do it gay... so we're doin' it gay!"
Have you ever read Anne Rice? There were gay undertones - and OVERtones in all of her vampire books. She didn't even want Cruise in that role, and threatened to remove herself from the film version if Lastat wasn't recast.
Tom may have a point with the gay thing though. It's so distracting. Who can focus? I mean making a movie requires a lot of focus. lol It's like, everyone has to know they are gay and we have to pretend to care, or not care..lol who cares. Bottom line is Tom's movies have made billions...uhh Bronson who? lol
Have you ever read Interview With a Vampire, Quantumdriven. It wasn't Tom Cruise's idea to make it gay. Anne Rice's novels are all pretty homoerotic.
Many storytellers including actors and writers are diagnosed with "sensory processing disorder." Of course nurture can stroke nature and reform a liability into an asset. Actors and writers with this diagnosis who rely on memory to summon the depth of experience or humanize a character from words on a script to a fully delivered performance have heightened physical and mental sensitivity to every nuance of memory. Memory is their trove of personal treasures, an account they regularly draw upon to bring the past to the fore. In our country where history is no longer taught, everything that happened forty years ago is considered irrelevant. Tom Cruise grew up in many places, lived a jarring and itinerant life. He was also very dyslexic and poor. Battling to overcome his excluded and impoverished existence, he now luxuriates in the aphrodisiac of Hollywood power. He is rigid in his views having compartmentalized most of his awful, primal upbringing -- along with his memory of how he became Tom Cruise! A fraction of a whole person, he looks at life through the opposite end of the telescope -- and it SHOWS in the lack of nuance and believability in every one of his performances. Cruise hasn't changed because he isn't open to change. His personal history reveals this. He is instead desperately seeking rules from his so-called religion. Simply reflect on Cruises' judgmental opinions not long ago of other actors such as Brooke Shields. A man without memory is soulless. History isn't taught but sooner or later everyone's background including scars is revealed.
agreed
Tom Cruise is a bag... of something that starts with a 'D.'
WHAT IS THIS GEEK TALENTED AT? INSULTS TO SOMEONE WHO COULD BUY AND SELL HIM? SOUNDS PRETTY IGNORANT TO ME!
Do I hear a little green with envy talk here? Who has had a bigger career, Tom Cruise, Denzil Washington, or whatshisname????? Very non-class act.
The fact of the matter is, everyone who has reflected on their experience working with Cruise, given at least a decade's time to get over career concerns about talking bad about Cruise, say he's a total c**t. From Brad Pitt to Artie Lange. The only ones who say nice things are Scientologists and Ben Stiller.
Because our past sheds light on who we are today!
"second sight" with pinchot and john laroquette [sp?] was an f-ing HI-larious flick. i would love to get drunk with them some evening. i mean....they wouldn't have to be at my table or anything....

I bet he's even more boring today.

Tom Cruise is a sad little man. He hides it under his controll freak image and his quirky "religion"... just an incredibly twisted little man.
The entire interview was actually quite awesome- it was an overview of his entire career, being the reason for talking about things that happened 25 years ago. He may not be as huge a name as Cruise or Denzel, but at least he's candid and honest.
