Catholic advocates are more than a little peeved with Larry David, whose HBO show 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' featured a segment this week that involved Jesus, out-of-control urine and mocking of the Christian belief in miracles. If you're a fan and still haven't seen the episode, stop reading now.
In the episode, which aired Sunday, the comedian accidentally splatters while relieving himself near a portrait of Jesus, and opts not to wipe it off. His pious assistant and her mother see the picture and whole-heartedly believe their bathroom has been touched by God.
"Was Larry David always this crude?" Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said in a statement released Monday. "Would he think it comedic if someone urinated on a picture of his mother?"
Donohue noted that while he believes 'Seinfeld' (created by David) was "brilliant," the same can't be said about 'Curb.'
"David's best years are behind him" Donohue said, adding "he ought to quit while he's ahead."
The Catholic booster sees a pattern with the network. "This might be fun to watch, but since HBO only likes to dump on Catholics (it was just a couple of weeks ago that Sarah Silverman insulted Catholics on 'Real Time with Bill Maher'), and David is Jewish, we'll never know."
Deal Hudson, of InsideCatholic.com, expressed similar outrage in comments to FoxNews.com: "Why is it that people are allowed to publicly show that level of disrespect for Christian symbols? If the same thing was done to a symbol of any other religions -- Jewish or Muslim -- there'd be a huge outcry. It's simply not a level playing field."
In a statement to Fox, HBO tried to calm the controversy by reminding people who they're angry with.
"Anyone who follows 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' knows that the show is full of parody and satire," the network said. "Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious."
The controversial episode, titled 'The Bare Midriff,' was actually more centered on David's paunchy assistant and her penchant for wearing tiny shirts. Larry has started taking a "new pill" to help increase his urine flow, which leads to the splashing. Later, he gets some on his assistant.
Well Dan, that was beyond a disrespectful comment. You really need help and will most likely rot in hell. You and Jerk David owe an apology to ALL Christians.
That is horrible. He will pay the ultimate price. It just leaves one additional spot in Heaven for us believers. No need to comment on this because I won't be checking back to see what you losers wrote.
Larry david is crude and rude, not funny at all. Throwing urine on a portrait of our Savior is disgusting, a travesty and he should apologize profoundly and stop doing any thing for a laugh. Anyone that would laugh at that or in anyway think it funny should also apologize, apologize to the Lord Our God. Jesus loves us.
You are aware that he didn't throw urine at a pic of Jesus. One it was a show, so it was most likely water possible with dye for color, two he didn't throw it, he had to relieve himself and there was splashback, get your facts right before you make comments.
P.S. I don't follow my own advice, this may be true or false, but most likely it is true.
I'm not a religious person but I do think that the scene in that episode is overboard, some things just should not be trifled with, what if he had pissed on the Koran or Jewish Scroll?
Mr. David's sacrilege is only the latest in a never ending assault on Christians by Hollywood. From "The Last Temptation of Christ" to Tom Hanks in "The Divinci Code", clearly offensive episodes of "The Simpsons" and "South Park", the atheist/Christ-hating drumbeat continues. I was actually going to watch crub your enthusiasm because of the Seinfeld reunion, however, I won't waste my time now. David's intellectual and creative decline follows the pattern of the last 50 years in entertainment where comics whose brains no longer contain the capability of whitty banter, devolve into profane and obnoxious discourse as a last resort. The up-state New York "clubs" of the Poconoes witnessed this trend in the 50's and 60's. And other actors are falling right in line. Julia Dryfess ("Elaine") was funny in Seinfeld but has become an offensive bore in "New Christine." Cortney Cox was great in "Friends" but decided to just commit professional suicide with the X-rated and thankfully short-lived "Dirt" Now she just seems like an ex-whore from Las Vegas. Maybe Cortney should have called up Elizabeth Berkley (from Disney to porn start)before she green-lighted "Dirt." But as to the anti-Christian bigotry that is growing in Hollywood, I have a theory. Homosexuals HATE the Bible because the Bible clearly condemns their behavior. Atheists HATE the Bible for obvious reasons. Immoral and criminal individuals HATE the Bible because they want to live by their own rules. About 80% of Hollywood and the entertainment industry is comprised of homosexuals, atheists, criminal and immoral people. These folks are now so disconnected with God-fearing, chruch attending Americans they might as well be on another planet. I'm sure Larry David thought urinating on a picture of Jesus would be funny. So I agree with the suggestion that someone should find a picture of David's mother and post a You Tube video of someone pissing on her face. jim coster
So let me see if I understand here, you don't like people who pass stereotype, pass judgement or poke fun at your religion but your ok with making accusations, offering unsubstantiated opinions on anyone you don't agree with? Gotcha
Yeah life sure is hard for poor old persecuted Christians. It's all hate, hate, hate from Hollywood. I mean, there has never been pro-Christian TV shows or movies. Oh wait, there was Touched by an Angel & Highway to Heaven to name two. Plus Hollywood also produced the CS Lewis Classic "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Oh and by the way I personally know several homosexuals who love the Bible and are practicing Christians. In fact, I would say they are probably a lot more Christian than you are. You come across as a mean-spirited, self-righteous bigot.
wow people need to lighten up....its comedy & its funny im catholic and theres many things I can take in life that can offened me but I look at it in a bigger picture...we have many other issues that we should be talking about then this tv show...(which me & my husband watch)
Amen: Analyze This. To all you non-beleivers there is a judgement day coming and you are going to remember in detail every joke you told, every sacreligious thing you ever said and/or done. There is no harm in believing.....great harm if you don't.
Waiting for Judgment day..?? The way many of you christians act and talk, you'd think it's your business to do the judging. Such hatefull language toward your fellow man. That to me is much more offensive. Leave the judging to your god. Isn't that what you are supposed to do..?
This episode will be of little or no consequence. Hollywood and liberals in general, the party of "Hope", "Change", and acceptance routinely mock Jesus, Christians and the Catholic Church in particular. This type of racism is considered appropriate and "entertaining". I think it's even encouraged. Liberal Catholics will be too afraid to complain and in some cases will laugh along. They long ago traded their morals and beliefs for abortion and in some cases a check from the government. A Jewish actor urinates on a picture of the sacred Christian Savior and this is considered entertainment? No matter, Larry David is probably Jewish in name only. Probably couldn't pick out Israel on a map. What if Mel Gibson, a Catholic, urinated on the prophet Mohammed? Whould that be entertaining? Would Hollywood raise an eye had Larry David urinated on a picture of President Obama or Martin Luther King, Jr.? You bet they would, and rightfully so, but Jesus doesn't exactly fit their image of a pop icon.
You do realize that the character ACCIDENTLY peed on the picture of Jesus. It is not like he gleefully took the picture down and urinated on it. So I say lighten up. It's comedy.
As a Catholic this is obviously a turnoff for me to Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and HBO - nothing more, nothing less. However if he had urinated on a picture of the Prophet Mohammed, there would be serious death threats.
What a silly mommy! Katie Holmes takes Suri into the water in her clothes as the two spend the afternoon at the beach in Miami. More of Today's Hottest Photos

Your beliefs are so limited that you have to lash at others? Why does this not surprise me?
