Taylor Swift Caught in Swastika Scandal

Taylor Swift has found herself in the middle of a photo scandal, as pictures of her standing with a male wearing a painted-on swastika at Katy Perry's birthday party are creating a whirlwind on the Web. In the photo, Swift is seen embracing a fellow partygoer, and both are painted on and splattered with paint -- which was the theme of Perry's party. The male Swift is with, however, has a neck-to-waist giant red swastika painted on his white shirt. Swift's camp has issued a statement regarding the photo, telling TMZ "Taylor took pictures with about 100 people that night ... she doesn't know who this guy is and she didn't realize what was on his shirt."

Blogs like WWTDD have begun noticing, and comment boards are also on fire. A photo of the two, purportedly posted by the male in the photo, accompanied a thread titled "Taylor Swift and I Are Officially Dating." While there's no name given of the male, many commenters took to Taylor's defense, with one saying: "Or maybe you're just a needy loser who harassed her for celeb pics so you could seem cool to a bunch of strangers."

WWTDD asks in its headline about the post: 'Taylor, What Are You Doing?.' Blackbook, reacting to early-on photos of Swift simply in proximity of the swastika shirt, wrote: "Sure, Swift isn't swastika-clad herself. But as a celebrity whose star is sparkling especially brightly following some incident that we've long forgotten that left her looking a lot like those wounded kittens on those Sarah McLachlan-ASPCA commercials, any measure of swastika-proximity is not advisable."

Swift's image as the good, clean country pop star has been blemishless throughout her career, while fellow young stars like
Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan have often found themselves at the center of controversy.

Cyrus caused some racial uproar when she was photographed pulling her eyes in a gesture that many thought was mocking Asians. She was also the center of a major scandal when she posed topless -- albeit covered in a sheet -- for an Annie Liebovitz Vanity Fair shoot that caused an uproar.

Britain's Prince Harry also found himself in hot water when he went to a costume party in a Nazi uniform, complete with swastika armband. Photos of the costume made front-page newspaper headlines, and Harry later apologized "for any offense or embarrassment he has caused."

does no one know that the swastika is originally a sign of peace? and that when it's painted in red, as in hindu or buddhist imagery, it's a sign of goodwill?

Ms Swift is a very young woman. In today's world of "Political Correctness" and with the censorship of the "thought police", she may not be aware if the death-camp significance of the symbol. And it was actually a Christian religious symbol (among others) before it was hijacked by Hitler for his reign of terror throughout Europe. It is still incorperated in the architecture of many older Catholic Churches. So give the lady a break. Don't judge things about which you don't have all the info.

Come on people and give her a break. She is as good a role model as any celebrity should be expected to be. Stop being a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks and put youself in her shoes--do I take the pic? Do I not take the pic? Do I have him remove the shirt? There are 50 people waiting for pics and I have about 30 seconds to decide! Or maybe she didn't even look down and see his shirt. Too late pics on the web and everybody is offering their 2 cents. Lighten up!

if she should be put out to pasture and held responsible for a picture on his shirt, shouldnt we put most NFL and NBA players out to pasture too for the pictures they paint of themselves all the time?

According to the guy in the picture, a friend of his painted it on his shirt after saying he looked like the "hilter youth" it wasn't a statment of any kind. It was just a joke. A bad joke, yes, but a joke.

I have met a lot of celebrities and the first thing they have always noticed was the shirt I was wearing!! Come on, of course Taylor knew what was on the shirt! But hey, the guy has a right to have whatever he wants on his shirt, that shouldn't stop a celebrity from taking a picture with him. We do have free speech and free expression in this country!

Taylor Swift is a douchebag. She's posing with a guy with a Nazi symbol. She could've refused to take the picture. She also sold out Joe Jonas to get popularity for her album. I wish people would stop acting like she's 5-years old. She's almost 20 and probably screwing Taylor Lautner's brains out. I bet she'll talk trash about him when they break up, too.

Rudyard Kipling was accused (after his death) of being a Nazi supporter because early editions of 'The Jungle Book' had the swastika symbol on them...except in 1894 it meant something completely different.
Remember that this was taken at Katy Perry's party. Chances are a lot of celebrities were there, including ones who are Buddist , Hindu, et c...Chances are that whoever painted the swastika knew the deeper meanings instead of the Nazi one. He might have even announced that it's a Hindu symbol for luck before painting it. Who knows? Who cares?
