Did Rihanna Wait Too Long to Talk?

When news of
Chris Brown's attack on
Rihanna broke last February -- on the night of the
Grammy Awards, no less -- the entertainment world was completely and utterly shocked. That is, until photos of Rihanna's battered face were leaked for all the world to see.
Now, eight months later, Rihanna is speaking out about her ordeal -- first, in a sit-down interview with
Diane Sawyer for TV's '
Good Morning America' and '
20/20,' and also in a revealing profile in
Glamour magazine. While no one can fault the young pop star for wanting privacy and time to recover, should she have broken her silence earlier?

"Obviously she's coming out now because she's got this album coming out," says Nekesa Moody, Music Editor for The Associated Press. "It kind of behooved her to wait until she could explain her story. [Also], there was a time when she couldn't talk about it. Chris Brown was going through the criminal justice system he just was formerly sentenced two months ago. I think she waited for all that to play out, which was pretty smart. It would be difficult for anyone to talk about this, but she always knew that whenever her album came out, she would have to talk about this. She came through something so public, you can't avoid it forever."
Kim Davis, programming manager for
AOL Music agrees. "Rihanna didn't have an obligation to speak about the attack or her attacker ... Waiting to speak only left us, her fans, wanting something from her more. Was she OK? She let the photogs and gossip rags do the speculating. She was smart to keep quiet. This is not to say that it was strictly a career move -- the girl went through some scary stuff. But look at her now. She's transformed. Take one look at her 'Rated R' album cover and you'll see a girl that's sending a message: 'I'm stronger.'"
Meanwhile Brown, who was sentenced to five years probation and community service in August for the attack, has not fared so well.
"Chris Brown, in stark contrast, won't stop detailing his every emotion through every imaginable medium -
Twitter, TV, you name it," Davis says. "The result of such an outpouring is, inevitably, a confused message. He's sorry, he wants her back, he's angry at
Oprah. Let's face it, headlines are not his reputation's friend."
"I don't think he's 'done,' " Moody says of Brown's diminished career prospects. "I think there's still a lot of resentment. People might like the music but that doesn't mean they'll love the person. I don't think that his apology to her was necessarily the greatest. But I don't think that anyone in this era of entertainment is 'done.' If R. Kelly can come back ... so many people have come back after doing really bad things, but at the same time, he has his work cut out for him."

Noone can sya for sure that Rhianna is doing this because of the release of her new album. She probably wanted to say it before, but she was probably holding out on getting back together with Chris, so she didnt want to mess up whatever was left of their relationship, not realizing that it was already over. Then she probably didnt want to hurt Chris and get him into more trouble with the law, last she was probably told to stay mum by her reps. I'm sure it wasn't her decision alone. Whatever her reasons, she still will make albums sales regardless, and the fact of the matter is for whatever reason shes comming out with the information, the damage has already been done in her life.

No man should ever lay-a-hand on a woman for any reason period. I'm proud of her for walking away, and I hope she stays away from him forever. Their time came and went. Obviously they were not good together and are not meant to be together. Rhianni took the negative and made something positive for herself out of this ugly situation but she was a strong woman anyway. I wish her the best. Her story is her story, and I don't believe no matter who she is that it is anyone's business but her own. If she wants to educate the public about domestic abuse then we should listen but any man that strikes-a-woman is a no good pieice of dirt. Hooray for her and God Bless this very talented artist. Mt. ahem, excuse me that was NOT domestic abuse! If it were true it would have been aassault. they have no children together, are not married, living together,or otherwise engaged. As a person who helps abused women I am insulted by this classification. She should learn to keep her hands to herself. Also as a carribbean woman, I have no doubt she struck first and instigated when he tried to walk away.

I am just sitting here laughing to myself. If this girl wanted to help others than she should own up to her part in this whole ordeal. Everyone seems to forget what happened before this whole thing exploded. She was reading a text message in HIS phone from another women. Having been a 20 year girl before I know what my mind set was and how my emotions have gotten the best of me before so I can only come to the conclusion that she threw the first punch or whatever she did and it went from there. It does not in no way excuse Chris for the beat down he gave her but she is as clearly wrong as he was. I have no sympathy for her other than she thinks she is slick by trying to open her mouth now that her album is about to drop. She knows what she is doing. Chris keeps trying to be nice but what he should have done is told the WHOLE story. If you want to tackle teen dating violence, then you need to share the whole scenerio so that others can learn from it. It goes both ways. Just because of her gender doesnt give her the right to attack and think she shouldnt be hit back. Both should have known better. But she is clearly no victim and I WILL NOT dub Chris as an abuser and if we all would be honest with ourselves we have walked this road before. That was simply was a fight gone bad that TMZ got a hold off.

You people are such haters. RiRi can't sing, Bey Bey can't sing? Please tell me who can sing. If none of you have ever been busted up by the person you love, then you have no place for comments here. Whether her album is coming out or not, she had to talk about her abuse at the hands of Chris Brown. This is a positive message RIRI is sending to young women. FF Love. Leave the man if he hits you. RiRi is a international pop icon. If you people have never heard her music, that speaks volumn about you, not her. Stop hating my girl and go back under the racist rock that you people live under. Thats all I got to say.

She had to wait until her latest album was ready for release. It's called marketing--sleazy marketing. I wouldn't be surpised if we see a "rise from the ashes" moment from him--possibly with the two of them releasing duet or two on that album. How special.

I find it very hard to sympathize with Rihanna because I don't think she is as innocent as she is trying to be.
The only reason why she is speaking out about the incident right now is because her album will be released soon and she wants good publicity. Typical.
I agree that Chris Brown should not have beat her. However, Rihanna was the instigator and nothing gives her the right to hit him either.
The law applies equally to everyone!
A man should never hit a woman AND a woman should never hit a man.
The incident occurred because Rihanna started the fight and Chris brown reacted badly. Clearly both of them were violent towards each other and both of them should share that responsibilty.
Yes, Rihanna was a victim. But to a certain extent, so was Chris. He made a terrible mistake and payed for it. EVERYONE makes mistakes, unfortunately his one was played out to the whole world.
People should give him a break and stop hating on him. He is a teenager who needs support and guidance to prevent him from making the same mistake again.
He deserves forgiveness, and I hope that he learns from his mistakes because he is talented young man.
Rihanna had no right to be violent towards Chris, and Chris had no right to be violent towards Rihanna. They are both to blame for the incident, and hopefully they will both learn from their mistakes.
It appears that Rihanna is only speaking about the incident now because she wants publicity, which is a shame. However, I do hope that she can learn from her mistakes and move on with her life.
Will I buy her album? No. I don't think she's that talented anyway.
I wish both Chris and Rihanna good luck with their lives, hopefully everyone can move on now.
