Rihanna Tells Diane Sawyer: I'm 'Embarrassed' I Loved Chris Brown
In the first portion of her ABC interview,
Rihanna tells Diane Sawyer that she went back to
Chris Brown "eight or nine" times following domestic violence incidents, and that she was blinded by love and made the wrong choices. "Don't react off of love. F love," Rihanna emotionally pleads to young girls who may be in her situation. Rihanna also says it was "embarrassing that's the type of person that I fell in love with," referring to Brown.

During the portion of the interview, Rihanna says that she had troubles coming out with her side of the story because "there are a lot of women who experienced what I did, but not in public. It made it really difficult. Here it goes, my little bit of privacy was exposed. It's something nobody wants anybody to know. So here I am."
She says she was "embarrassed" by the situation because she "didn't want people to think that's the kind of person... I fell in love with that person," a love "so unconditional that I went back," Rihanna said, adding that it's "humiliating to say this happened. To accept that? It's a traumatizing experience." When Sawyer said many women often go back to their abusive boyfriends several times, Rihanna chimes in with her own personal number: "Eight or nine, actually."
There had been reports of previous domestic violence instances between Brown and Rihanna via her police report from that February night, but this is the first time she's acknowledged such a high number.
"I stayed. I even went back after he beat me, which was wrong ... I'm a human being and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal," Rihanna tells Sawyer. "I'm not perfect. It's pretty natural for that to be the first reaction. It's completely normal to go back and start lying to yourself. The minute the physical wounds go away, you want this thing to go away. This is a memory you don't want to have again."
So what made Rihanna finally see that going back to Brown wasn't the answer? The fact that she has such an influence on the public thanks to her fame.
"When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result into some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn't be responsible ... If Chris never hit me again, who's to say that their boyfriend won't ... kill these girls? These are young girls. I just didn't realize how much of an impact I had on these girls until that happened. It was a wake-up call for me, big time, especially when I took myself out of the situation," Rihanna says emotionally.
She also offers advice to "any girl who is going through domestic violence: Don't react off of love. F love. To come out of the situation and look at it third-person and for what it really is, you then make your decision. Because love is so blinding."
Brown is currently serving five years probation after pleading guilty to felony assault charges stemming from the February 8 attack on Rihanna.
The full Rihanna interview will air on ABC's '20/20' on Friday night. Brown will also be doing an interview of his own, which will air on MTV on Thursday night.

I do agree to a certain point. Domestic violence is against men just as much as it is against women. People tend to feel more remorse for the woman on the receiving end but not when the man is on the receiving end. It goes both ways. She is trying to sell her new CD. She is also at fault in this situation. Women need to keep their hands to themselves just as a man. She went too far by putting her hands on him and looking for trouble. Both parties need to step up and admit there wrong. Chris Brown has done so but Ms. perfect has not.

I think there is alot more to the story then we are hearing. Alot of men do get abused (not saying she hit him) but never report it. We need to teach our sons AND daughters that it is not ok to hit your significant other. I am speaking from experience as the abuser and I am the woman. My ex used to make me so mad and I would seriously beat the crap out of him and looking back I feel bad, especially since he never retaliated against me physically when I was doing this. If your boyfriend is cheating on you, just dump him, don't start beating on him because he has a right to defend himself too. and men this goes to you too, don't physically hurt your woman because she emotionally hurt you, just dump her and find someone else, and don't put up with an abusive woman.

now, let the congregation say Amen.
Until Rihanna is held accountable for the part she played in this whole mess, there is no justice & public opinion is just that - the public's opinion.
I think Fifty Cent got it right when he said the DA leaked this photo to punish Chris in ways they could not. The right thing to do would be to charage Rihanna as well..... Where does she get off playing the victim. She just want that album to do good - I wouldn't have anything to do wit it if they were giving them out!

This is a crock...it took her this long to practice this statement. It was wrong, but there is something wrong with this girl. Fake, phony and pimping an album!!! Not a Rihanna fan...there are three sides to a story and the truth lies in between the madness. They were both young and silly. Chris, forgive you, move on and keep your hands to yourself. Rihanna, move on and put some clothes on. Stop pimping yourself out for album sales.

Has anyone ever heard the term "it takes two" I agree neither she or
he should stay in an abusive relationship. Most men like a fiesty
woman who usually throws the 1st,2nd, and 3rd punch or slap to a man
who was caught doing something wrong.I don't condone violence from
anyone man or woman. If doesn't hit back he is a punk,if he does he
is an abuser!!

amen I totally agree her new album is deranged and not for teenagers.............

We sure see where U stand. Look a woman doesnt deserve to be beat on, if she hit him he shoulda walked away. The fact is he is just insecure and cant handle being with a woman that draws attention. All that fame doesnt make him emotionally stable, hes just a product of his environment what else can you say.

In these kinds of incidents, whoever get their butt whupped is considered the victim. Saint Rhianna is not a innocent victim. Most likely, she's and instigator. You don't haul of and hit people...unless you can "back it up", because you may get more than you bargained for, especially if heated words have been exchanged and the person is already worked up. She went back "8 or 9 times after" That wasn't unconditional love....she liked the sex and wasn't ready to give it up. Don't lie to yourself Rhianna, and don't be embarrassed. Just learn the lesson and move on. You're human.

i believe that if a man is getting beat up by a woman ,that man has a right to defend himself in a way that does not permanently cause physical damage such as restraining or pushing to the ground .i am a woman and i think a lot of women take advantage of the double standard that says a man can't hit a woman but it's ok for a woman to hit a man .hitting is wrong all around but everyone man or woman has a right to defend themselves if they feel that they are physically threatened

Well I Believe that it is still 2 sides to this situation...they are both victims in this enviorment that is condition to immoral..THEY are still children, people lets stop throwing stones @ them and each other and lets face the true adversary..Mediocrity and LIES.

Even though her music and videos don't reflect what she is saying, that women should be respected, if at least one girl listens to her and leaves an abusive relationship, the interview was worth it. I think the timing is bad. Either promote the music or just talk about the relationship. It's like most celebs, they want to be left alone until a new movie is coming out and then they can't put themselves on tv enough. I hope she isn't doing this to promote herself and that she really has a concern for other young woman. I must say her videos don't do much for empowering women, just shows what they think they have to do to make money. The videos aren't made for men to "hear" the music. With that kind of bait, what kind of a man do you think you are going to catch?

Why don't everybody stop hating on my dog Chris. He said sorry and bought her jewlery the first day he got out of county jail. He even manned up and went on Larry King to explained how he must have blacked out. And if his mama can forgive him, so should we. I can't belive those in Hollywood who dance and sang to his songs now shun him while they protest to free that perverted child molester Roman Polanski.

I am fans of both Rhianna & Chris but I totally would like to commend her on her speaking up and keeping it real. I'M so glad Rhianna spoke up there are many girls who are in the same boat and cant even say anything because of the more problems & domestic violence it will bring to lives. I really am going to take in her advise because I feel that message was for me this morning. Go Rhianna! Wake up ! Speak up! & F**K love! .........SanSan

The media and the haters just want to twist her words ...She didnot say that Chris hit her 7 or 8 times...! She said just added to the statement that Diane made...! Her concern for young girls has arrived at the same time of her soon to be released album...! I would have more respect for her if she would have admitted that "they had a fight" and take responsibility for her part in this incident. And then advise young couples that if they find themselves in a situation that resembles her story ..then LEAVE and don't look back...! Male or Female they are so many YOUNG COUPLES that are unhappy in their relationship and they disrespect each other and when it becomes verbally & physically abusive and in some case suicidal..! GET OUT. Talk to them NOT at them..! Rihanna & Chris have the power and the ear of the young people to really reach them...But this mytar & victim act that she wants to put on is so phoney...and the chance to reach these kids is going to be lost ..! Her first priority should be to herself...Be honest with yourself Rihanna..! You stayed in that relationship because YOU were getting a lot of attention for dating Chris and when he was on tour you joined him and it helped your career. A lot of people in the industry noticed that you were getting very jealous of all the attention he was getting from the girls and women..! That cause a lot of fights ..where you felt he was direspectin you ..Tell the TRUTH..!

SHE DID NOT SAY SHE WENT BACK 8-90 TIMES. I HATE HOW THE MEDIA CAN TWIST THINGS AND LIE. SHE SAID ON AVERAGE WOMEN GO BACK 8-9 TIMES.
I THINK SHE STOPPED SEE CHRIS NOT ONLY FOR HERSELF BUT ALSO FOR OTHER YOUNG GIRLS WHO SEE HER AS A ROLE MODEL.
HOWEVER I THINK SHE STILL HAS FEELINGS FOR CHRIST BUT SHE CANT TRUST THAT HE "IS" CHANGED.
SO HE IS LETTING HER HEAD LEAD HER THIS TIME AND NOT HER HEART...

And now all of the ignorant Chris Brown fans are going to chime in with their stupid opinions. Stupid little girls, go ahead, go worship an abuser. It hasn't been said anywhere that she ever hit him back in the first place, it's something made up by Chris Brown teenies in the first place. Secondly, it's never right for a man to lay his hands on a woman in anger. Never. But go ahead and believe hearsay. Karma will deal with you ridiculous nitwits in it's own way, I just hope for your sake it's not you getting your pea brains beaten out of your skulls by some jerkoff like Chris Brown.
Bravo to Rhianna, but she has nothing to be embarrassed about. It's a cycle, you're afraid and you somehow are made to believe that you deserve the abuse. It happens to good, strong, intelligent women all the time. But it's important she speak out about this. Men not only hurt women but kill them daily because of this. It's time we women take a stand!
